Gunilla;
Thank you! Victorian style is really tempting, I must admit!
The timeline is somewhere inbetween the first and second world war, and given the fact
that most pics from that era were in black and white, I havent yet any clear vision of the
overall scheme, I guess it all depends on the lighting setup, which is my major concern
nowadays!

looks great, what if you had more rivits in the rafters. perhaps a vaulted section in the middle with windows, or windows along the edge of the buildings, and the detail for that mechanized pulley is great what about a giant oversized crane that runs on tracks near the ceiling so that they can lift and move the parts of the tanks around. a nice detail to look for in older factory floors, end grain wood floors http://www.timelesstimber.com/Contractor/index.php?content=end+grain+block only every time ive seen them they are about 1foot square normally very dark wood that has aged over time. ive seen them in old ford factories and in the studabaker warehouses and factories in southbend in. i love the tanks, maybe look at any of the tanks between ww1 and ww2, they were all rivited. great stuff man keep it up :D

Nice clean modeling on that hoist, good work. Those tank rounds look maybe a wee bit too shiny?

Ferx
11-20-2008, 06:35 AM
Hey Mathias,

Great work on the ammo, like a lot the crane and the hoist! :D Maybe the material for the ammo is more like a ceramic or plastic texture. Think you need a less specular reflection on it and a bit more difusion. Perhaps some "dirt and scratches" on both maps, only a comment :) Great work my friend and cant wait to see the whole factory on functions :D Cheers my friend! :beer:

varma
11-21-2008, 10:01 AM
rrshuping;
I really appreciate the comment and the link you suggested, I totally agree about the
rafters, and I will put some windows in the middle, and perhaps change/add some of
the rivits right after I pinpointed the final setttings for the camera!
The Idea about wooden floor is also tempting, and I will try that out, despite my initial
Idea to have a floor with cooler colors, so that stands against all the warmer shades of
metal, thanks for the link!
A ceiling-based crane, was my first Idea before I turned to the hoist, but I will give it
another shot, probably further back in the scene!
Thanks again for taking time to reply!

Jimmy;
Thanks my friend! and YOu are right about the shine, I guess I got carried away with
the specular! That will be fixed right away!

Fernando;
I'm so grateful to have your support and encouraging words, you and Jimmy were right
about the specualr and I will also add some scraches and dirt to the shells, as long as

Hey Mat!

Nice start, I especially like the tank design, real nice! And the detail on the crane is also superb.

I agree with rrshuping a couple of posts back, once you set your camera angle, you might want to add more detail on the rafters closest to the camera. And the giant crane running the length of the ceiling would also be really cool. Will there be any openings, doors, on the side walls?

Good luck with the challenge!

Mark;
Hey mate and thanks!
Actually I didn't think about a stopper mechanism for the railing, not everyone is as detailed
and thoughtsome like you in terms of construction, that's for sure!
My problem is that I need an awefull lot of war gadgetry and machinery in a matter of two
months, and preferably very lowpoly, so that my system can handle the workload, I guess
that would mean a lot of cutdowns on details!

Hehe, pun non-refundable, sorry! Thanks a lot for droping by! You are right, the
undercarriage, and the part the cannon-butt is resting upon , can and will be raised
using the big wheel on the side, I guess! You see, most of the details will be washed
away in the big scene, now add lightfog, DOF and some smoke, and you got only one
more month to wrwap it all up! But I take your "army of workers" advice and add more
of them!
Thanks buddy!

Hey Mat! As others have already said, that is one awesome looking cannon! I like the texture start on it, but I feel it needs more rust maybe in certain places. Right now, I feel like it's the same texture on the entire object. Maybe add more rust where there's seems, screws, etc.

As for the workers, I don't know how far they will be, but some of the poses right now feel a little stiff. For those far away it's fine, but if any are real close to the camera, you might wnant to add a little softness in their poses...

Keep it up!

varma

Gunilla;
Thanks sister, your words are really encouraging and much warming as our little city has
entered the dark side of the planet and pretty cold! hehe, I guess that cannon in your
balcony will definitely make a strong statement against "them noisy irritating neighbours",
Let's show them who the new boss is!

Amirgdx5;
Thank you very much, I guess all I need for the WWIII, is just a laptop with a big shiny
"Launch" button on it, far away from the "Escape" button! hehe, but the Idea of my own
personal war is really intriguing!

Christopher;
Thanks a lot for the constructive critique, and you are right about both issues, the rust
has been on my mind ever since the start of the project, and I will add some more later
on, right now I just need to bring in all the elements I need to have, in the the scene,
and then use the extra time, if any, on detailing and of course the characters, those are
always my favorite!

chilombiano;
Thanks for visiting and I'm glad you liked the cannon!
the concept is about a warlord type of Steampunk, living and dreaming of war, with a few
twists here and there, I hope the future updates can illuminate this a bit better!

Hey Mathias,

Cool cannon, really great design! The texture is looking really good. :D

I´m not totally agree with Csicso3d. The big metallic machines and pices, are not much specular, but you can add some polished brass pieces with more specular reflection. Put in the specular map the bumps, scratches, dirt, etc. blocking the specular reflection for a not even reflection and a bit more realistic touch, only a comment :)

About your models, the workers look a bit like woman. On your rig, bend the waist a bit lower (a bit up of the pockets) :)

Again, great work my friend!! and cant wait to see your whole concept!! Cheers kompis!! :beer:

The shaders lift your canon to a new level. I think they work really well. I think you're facing the same issue as I am with my duck - when copper 'rusts' it goes green and that is not a look I think will work for your canons or for my duck either. But Fernando suggested some nice ideas about the specular map. At the moment, the canon looks like something old which is also being well cared for, and that is a totally believable scenario. So I think you could be justified for leaving your shaders as they are. You could even have one of your worker characters shown with a rag giving one one of the canons a bit of a clean and polish and that would give even more reason for your shaders looking they do.

I suppose it all comes down to making a lovely image. Whichever approach you decide to take, I think it will work really well

Thanks a lot for cutting me the slack a bit over here, much needed! It came in a very good

or style I would choose for this prj, I didn't know then, and I still don't! Almost all the photo
and pictures from the era in question were published in b/w or sepia, and I don't know how
a colored version will be successful in evoking the right coupling with "the past"!
There are still a few more areas I need to improve before getiing that far, like the lighting
and filling up the scene, so I'm open to all kinds of impulses!
Be well!

Now thats a gun! Cool stuff. I like the armoured car very retro I love that style Those early cars were definitely some of the nicest looking ones ever built.

The foundry scene is a good idea it will add some interesting light and colour.
Yep. I couldn't have said it better!

Jimmy!
Heyhey buddy and thanks for the nice words! Yeah, the foundry will project most of the
interesting color/light bleed throughout the wet floor! Spectacular scenery, if I only could
get there!
:rolleyes:

Fernando;
Hola Amigo, come' stai? Thanks for the support, my friend! A sneak peak will have to wait,
I affraid, all I got right now, are a few meshes scattered around, bare and cold! I guess I
need to fix the overall lighting first!
See you!
:wavey:

Christopher;
Hellooooo old friend! Maya mighty warrior! So glad you dropped by! Please tell me you are
joining too, there is still time, you know, you could do a smal scene with few characters!
Peace!
:)

Mdavid;
Hey mate and thanks a lot, really glad you like it so far!
Good luck with your projrct as well!

Thanks man, it's nothing compared to your wonderful thread, with that awesome work

Models, as always, looking very cool! I also can't wait to see all of them put together and what framing and composition of your scene you will take! Have you thought about it yet? Anyway, keep it up!

See you!

Hey chris, and thank for visiting! About the final look/style, I've had a few tests, it feels
kind of a bit difficult to find the right mix, as most pics from the past come in black and
white or different shades of Sepia, but I wanted a color version for my final render, and
yet, have the correct assosiation with the past! Let's see what this weekend can bring
up!
Good luck with your project as well, my friend!

That's a great addition. I've always been impressed by the elegant poses you get out of your 3D characters and that pose is yet another example. It looks beautifully natural and gives a sweet, human touch. Nice idea too, to have him wanting to have his truck fixed

Dmacb
12-14-2008, 08:24 AM
Way to go bror!

The kid looks really natural and it shure makes this scene crazier... a giant war machine(s) factory, under supervision of the big boss himself, with a little boy wandering about and asking if the truck can be fixed... Nice!

Keep up the good work man!

Hi Iban and thanks a lot, dude! Sorry it took a while for me to reply!
Wish you also the best with your concept!

Soapy;
Yo Jim, thanks for droping by! Glad you liked it! Yeah, mixed up, in a certain way, I guess
that's what our two concepts have in common, except yours has more suprises up the
sleeves! Good luck, buddy!

Mdavid;
Thanks Mark for the kind words, I really hope this can make up for the poor, hasty job I
did on the workers! Children have always a special place in my works, and they usually
get the best treatment!

Mac;
Ola Irmanö! Thanks for the reply, you exactly read my mind about the concept! That's
what's going on in there, just that and nothing but that!
C u around amigo!

Hi bror!

No updates yet??? I'm kidding, I know you're full of work...

Anyway, has the kid already turned the place upside down??? Or is the father going to offer him a Meccano? That way he can repair is own toys...

Be cool brother and keep up!!! You :buttrock:

Nice finish Varma! Super result. At first I didn't like the extreme perspective and vanishing point, but then it occurred to me that it could be thought of metaphorically in terms of the endlessness of some conflicts. Great work, be proud!

daWinky;
Hei Sabrina and thanks! It's finally over and time to start a new project!
It's been a struggle against time and hardware resources, and the final output differs
slightly from what I had in mind, but I guess I can call it finished now! Thanks for the
support throughout the challenge!

Soapy;
Hi Jim! Thanks a lot Hockeyman! You read teh meesage right about endlessness! Quite
obviously, there's no limit to man's hunger for power and conquest! I had several camera
renders in the begining to establish the right angle, this one isn't the optimal either, but
beat the other comps! I needed to capture a great portion of the ceiling, along with the
perception of depth!

Gunilla;
Heyhey and thank you! The upload kicked in the first time I tried, and I was happy to see
it worked, and now glad to hear it worked for you too!
I'm reallly grateful for sharing this challenge with you guys and can't wait to start the next
one, hopefully with more experience and fresh Ideas!

Hey Mat!

I was starting to get worried that you were also a casualty of the holiday season and weren't able to finish your image in time for the deadline (as I was...), but I'm very glad to see that you were able to make it! And with a great image too! The concept is very cool and I love the overall gritty look to the image! Very great mood! Congrats on making it to the end! And here's hoping we meet again in another challenge in the near-future!

varma
01-13-2009, 04:59 AM
Hey Chris and thanks a lot! I wasn't quite sure I could finish it either, as my machinery
started to cough when I went in for rendering the final scene, especially occlusion pass,
that had to be broken into sections!
I can see there is an extension in the deadline, hope this means good news for you, cause
I really like to see the fountain of life you are working on, and all the sweat modeling you
have done! Why not give it another go and hope the best?
Of course we'll meet in another challenge too, I'm now preapring a scene for the NVidia
contest, still another month for that one, if you are interested!
Keep cool, my friend!

Hola Alejandro! I'm so glad to see you around again! I wish you could be in this too, cause
I enjoyed your fun stuff in the last challenge a lot! Maybe next time?
I'm really glad you liked the render, brother!
:)

Mac;
Ola kompis! Thanks a thousand times for always supporting me with greatest comments and
critique, especially your sharp insight and very helpful tips!
Yeah, I'm glad I managed to finish this one too, it gave me some invaluable lessons in how
to render rather large scenes! Hope you find better time next time and jion the fun!
Be well!
