hi hi , I loved that matte painting challenge :) I missed the one after that and have to admit I have been fairly busy and not keeping an eye on the forum for more. I think I need some kind of alarm for when those challenges come up. :D
Thankies and good luck to you also :)
11-11-2008, 03:56 PM

11-11-2008, 03:59 PM
oh Thank you Michael, as a matter of fact I have my idea already in my head. (I just have to keep it from leaking out) Usually that is the hardest part of these challenges for me, the idea that is, not the whole leaking thing. All I have to do now is make some main character sketches and start developing it :)
11-11-2008, 06:09 PM
Another familiar one. Good luck :)
11-11-2008, 07:08 PM

11-11-2008, 07:34 PM
hi Martin :) thanks, I will be keeping an eye on yours also
Tiziano, ha ha yes I was very very happy to see the topic of this challenge. I will have a lot of fun , probably more seeing what everyone creates than creating my own. Good luck to you :)

11-15-2008, 10:01 PM
I have been thinking and have this sketch of a mechanical rat lying around. So this is what I am going to do. I will be doing the Legend of the Pied Piper. This rat was my inspiration. I will get some concepts up soon :)
Like your rat :) I have been considering the same story at some point, it's a good one. It will be very interesting to see what you will do with it.
And enjoyed very much your other steampunk thingies, specially the dragon and the Paddle Duck

Hello Linda, long time no see!
Just wanted to wish you best of luck! I'm looking forward to seeing what you're Pied Piper will look like!
Cool sketch, love the gears on your rat, great design on it :D Your idea sounds really great and cant wait to see more updates on your concept! :)
11-18-2008, 07:42 PM
I might go with a sea serpent of some sort. A very fast little scribble.
11-18-2008, 07:49 PM
I might change my mind here on what I want to do, still scribbling stuff in my sketch book. I probably should not post my scribbles ha ha, but that is just me :P
Rico hi hi :) Thank you so much for stopping by
Ferx I love your little tooth mousey :) I did actually paint this particluar rat in another image a while ago, so I might not go with the pied piper idea. Still thinking....though I have been doodling on the rat a bit in photoshop, so might just keep him for myself when it is done :)
dragonflysh Thank you :)
11-18-2008, 08:57 PM
... and then I have this scribble too, was thinking of a pooka concept. I could have fun too with this one. I don't know if I can get the horses legs right :P I have a heck of a time with horses legs. Might be a good thing for me to do though for a learning experience.
Hey nice concept for the Pooka, maybe combine two myths and stick a unicorn horn on it :D
Great pooka sketch, like a lot. Really nice pose, put a cool action note on the overall sketch, and the foreshort chain put a nice perspective touch... fantastic my friend :D Cant wait to see more on your stuff ! :D Cheers!
Thats a beauitful concept Linda, I love the horse design!
11-19-2008, 06:22 AM
This piece has a lot of potential. I love the metal shavings feel to the mane and tale. Wicked stuff.
11-19-2008, 06:48 AM
Looks great! the head of the horse its a little bit big in comparison with the body
11-19-2008, 08:48 AM
M477 - ha ha ha that is a possibility, thanks :D
Ferx - Thank you my friend :) I might throw a few more ideas out and see which I want to complete for the challenge. I have scrapped the pied piper idea I could not quite get my head around the main character the way I wanted to. If I go with the pooka I will for sure add more chains ;)
Rupy - Thank you so much :)
KolorGuild - Thank you , if I do this my idea for the main and tail will be like twisted wire or something along those lines, Tedious detail work, aaahhh not sure what I am getting myself into here :P
bandro - Thank you thank you, I started it with the head smaller and I thought it looked weird, so made it bigger. Love the crits that are so helpful. If I go with him I will for sure try to get his head to fit his body. Though you may have to come back and correct me again ;)
aw - love the mousy thing - best of luck!

Nice sketches & ideas Linda!Like the pied piper idea but n the other hand, the seadragon could be really epic too.Just to make you hesitate some more:D
Indeed the horselegs could be just a bit more muscled. Now they seem a bit too thin maybe.
11-20-2008, 05:16 AM
great to see you here in another challenge and it looks like this is totally your topic, very nice sketches:thumbsup: ! The one of the rat is really stunning and I already get I good idea of the style your going with, yet I can not say which concept might be the best. Looking forward to your choice and the progress!
Nice day for you,
Excuse my ignorance, but what is pooka? I am have never heard of it :banghead:
Like the horse very much, may be even better then the rat :)
11-20-2008, 09:18 PM
Daw _ thankies :D good luck to you too
OKMER – weee yes skinny little horse legs and a big horse head ha ha. I think I might do a quicky color on a sea serpent type thingy see how it comes out. Yes , you have me thinking more :P
Sabrina - Thank you so much. I might have to post the rat coloring part and see how he looks. That is not done yet though J
Musi – A pooka is basically a spirit or faery that can take different forms. In some stories they take animal form, a dark horse is one of the forms.
I have pasted a bit of information , though you might not have time to wade through all of it .
The Phooka (old Irish), (also Pooka, Puka, Phouka, Púka, Pwca in Welsh, Bucca in Cornish, pouque in Dgernesiais, also Glashtyn, Gruagach) is a creature of Celtic origin, notably in Ireland and Wales. It is one of the myriad of faery folk, and, like many faery folk, is both respected and feared by those who believe in it.
According to legend, the phooka is an adroit shape changer, capable of assuming a variety of terrifying forms. It may appear as a horse, rabbit, goat, goblin, or dog. No matter what form the phooka takes, its fur is almost always dark. (its name is a cognate of the early Irish ‘poc’, ‘a male goat’, but it most commonly takes the form of a sleek black horse with a flowing mane and glowing yellow eyes.
Encountering a Phooka
If a human is enticed onto a phooka’s back it has been known to give them a wild ride. But unlike a kelpie, which will take its rider and dive into the nearest river or lake to drown and devour him, the phooka will do the unfortunate rider no real harm. The Púca has the power of human speech, and has been known to give advice and lead people away from danger. Though the phooka enjoys confusing and often terrifying humans, it is considered to be benevolent.
Certain agricultural traditions surround the Púca. It is a creature associated with Samhain, the third Pagan (Celtic, Wiccan) Harvest Festival, when the last of the crops is brought in. Anything remaining in the fields is considered “puka,” or fairy-blasted, and hence inedible. In some locales, reapers leave a small share of the crop, the “púca’s share,” to placate the hungry creature. Nonetheless, November Day is the Púca’s day, and the one day of the year when it can be expected to behave civilly.

The Pied Piper!!
Is my vote!!!
11-20-2008, 09:40 PM
I just wanted to take some time to color a bit on this rat. See how long it would take me. If I do go with the pied piper idea then I will have to do a LOT of rats :P Looky he has a lil eye patch, a pir-rat
11-21-2008, 05:36 AM
Oh, that's a cute looking rat, really nice. The eye pad is a cool detail.
Looking forward to see the progress!
11-21-2008, 06:38 AM
Yeah, it does look kind of cute, doesn't it? :)
hahahahaha love your PIR -RAT hahahaahahah :D the patch is a superb touch, cool !! Looks really great. The textures on the rat are really nice. Cant wait to see your next update :D
thxs for the comment, love your rat concept, and the theme your going with, will love to see what direction you'll take this in, cheers, good luck, and have fun!

Oh, I LOVE concept of puka! Thanks for explanations, Linda.
I wonder which concept you will decide to go with... (Plz-plz be puka :D).
12-19-2008, 01:06 PM
Thank you so much you guys :) I have not had time to work on this, it is kind of crunch time for the game I am working on and also for a childrens song book I am illustrating. I am hoping when some of the work wraps up I can seriously get moving on this. I would hate like heck to miss a challenge on a topic I love so much. Good luck everyone :)
