I'm going ahead and sticking my foot in the door to get into this competition, not sure how I'll do and all, but might as well try! :)
Anwyho, at this point I'm going to attempt to construct a steampunk'd version of the Norse Tree of Life Yggdrasil. I've done some basic sketching in GIMP and the current doodle is below! :)
I'll probably make many many changes along the way but this is just a start to show some ideas I have.
Plan to make the base sort of rotting and rusting, involving oil derrick like machines that pump life into the upper parts of the tree. Also wrapping around the base is a dark mechanical serpent that chews up and destroys the life giving roots of the tree.
Slightly above the roots of the tree are several branches that hold up our world (Migard) and the various other worlds below it. Migard will be a large supporting structure with a city built around the trunk and farmlands extending to the edges of the supports which will be like the ocean dripping off the edge of the world. The other worlds, being smaller than our own, will be shown in mechanical gyroscopic devices hanging under ours.
As the trunk grows higher the branches and leaves create cloud like structures, holding the sky in place over our world. On top of these clouds and branches is built Asgard, the city of the gods. Between Asgard and Migard is a squirrell that runs up and down the trunk of Yggdrasil, acting as a messanger between the various worlds.
Above Asgard the tree finishes out in bronze, copper, brass, and golden leaves. Behind the tree are the heavens above, showing the various constellations and stars.
Hopefully this should work out!
I realize my doodle is not very good but I think you can get the general idea from it :)
Hope you all enjoy and good luck to everyone entering!

Just a quick update, I'm kinda lagging behind but I've gotten most of it blocked out. Here's the scene so far:
Hope you all like! I'm working on the roots right now.

Here's my original sketch of Yggdrasil.
I've been working on the model for a while now, but was just browsing the forum and realized that I hadn't uploaded this properly. So yeah it's a step backwards, but all the old stuff still applies. I'll upload a current shot of the image later this evening. Hope you all like! Some great stuff is coming out of this challenge, hope mine is good too...
