So these first few entries are goign to be just a bit of my thinking outloud. I am trying to figure out what it is that I will be working on for this entry.
I know my wife might like it if I were to do a Steampunk Gensha or maybe something with an egyptian Theme.
Though I would like to work in an airship somewhere.
Though a steam punk Chtuthlu might be intresting to say the least.
More tehcnical thoughts I am having, I want to bring more of an illustrative style to this challenge, I'll also be using depth map shadows and faking some shadows outright, to give it that harsh 50s early victorian era look. That should also lend to the style over all.

Here we see Valcanus and his Daughter who is showing off her latest inovations the clock-work War Kitten.
This is just a quick 20 minutes sketch that I did durring lunch. Just thinking about some concepts. My Wife has also been after me to do a war kitten illustration so I think this is the right time to do that.

Ok, mister! You asked for it, so I'll be hounding you for progress! :D
Neat idea so far, but I'd actually like to see you explore some of the others you threw out there. If nothing else, just to get you warmed up. Although I realize this is a first exercise sketch, I see one thing that happens a lot in these comps - it's visualized for the camera. The chars are all lined up so each one can be neatly seen - break that up, imagine the workshop, what he was doing, where she walked up from, what that damn cat knocked down on the way there.
Go deep, man! Be the Steampunk!

The more I look at this, the more I wnat to mess with the composition of the piece. I think the idea is there, but the elements in the scene and overall design is not there at all. Its going to take a bit of work to get it there. But i have no doubt that I will be able to.

some ideas, Looked back at one of the previous challenges for some insight. Two of these were concept sketches that didn't go anywhere, but might this time around. I will try and sit down later and knock out some more sketches based on these very rough ideas.

Just another ideas... this is just a quick 6 minute sketch that I did the other day at lunch. Though it has me thinking. I really need to sit down and do 20 or 30 concepts, just knock some quick ones out and not spend tons of time stressing on details.

Lots and lots of neat ideas, sir! Are you going to set a target for when you settle into one and start on the comp? Maybe draw like a fiend for another week and then dig into one?

More concept sketches. quicker ones just to get the thoughts moving some more.
1. Rocketeer saves woman on top of bank.
2. Side Show man showing off giant steam gorilla.
3. Scientist explaining where he's from to the Jungle amazons of Venus
4. On safari in the Jungles of Venus
5. Shopping with Medusa
6. Under the Sea, deep sea diver makes contact with (steamy mermaid?)
7. Steampunk Cat burgular examines her prize.
8. Battling the Giant bugs of the Martian Dessert.

refined 3 of the concept sketches a bit, also added color just to see what they would look like.

While I was out visiting relatives this last week, I sat down with my sketchbook and started thinking a little bit more about the cat burgular theme I threw in a medusa and some random girl sketches just because. However I think I'll be exploring this theme just a little bit more, in the realm of enviorment.
It feels like this one has a lot more to explore in some ways for me. I'll post another more complex layout before the end of the week =).

Interesting how your thought process works. Good luck with the competition.
