11-30-2008, 04:27 PM
Crickey, I am absolutely uncertain about what I wanna do here...
There's so many myths to chose from (if not all appealing to me personally) and I am having a hard time running with anything.
First I was thinking I'd do Journey to the West, one of the most popular chinese myths. But a lot of peeps are tackling stories with monkeys (Okmer doing a fine job at it already :) ) so I didn't wanna do another one.
I like old German legends, the Nieblungs with Siegfiried and also Norse mythology. Ragnarok comes to mind as an interesting event to illustrate. Fenrir, the wolf and all that...
Greek? I dunno, not exactly appealing.
Of course there's japanese legends as well. Might need to inspect that area more closely maybe...
I am sure there is some awesome story out there that I once read and would instantly do, but I can't remember! :/
12-04-2008, 07:07 PM
And an ooooh right back at you! ;)
12-07-2008, 05:16 PM
Yo, warming up! :)
But I have prolly decided on a myth.
It's a japanese tale about an archer named Hidesato who goes and slays a giant Centipede rescuing the Dragon King's (Ryujin) empire.
I was doodling a random concept for the Centipede, just getting into the swing.
I think I will do a few more sketches so I can catch a possible vibe for what I want...
I'll certainly try to go as crazy as possible for all the designs. :)
12-07-2008, 08:32 PM
Welcome to the challenge Hideyoshi. Good luck! Seems like your entry will be an interesting one.
Your conceputal is looking really good, I love the colors your bringing into your piece, will make sure to see where you go with this ,cheers!

hey hideoshi great sketch~ look forward to this!
12-07-2008, 11:40 PM
Very nice start bro! The idea looks interesting, big metal creatures always taste good for me :D Also love classic combination of warm and cold color tones. Good luck
12-08-2008, 12:28 AM
i love the atmosphere and the great idea for the concept. Will be showing this thread:) cheers:thumbsup:
12-08-2008, 11:59 AM
Welcome on board Lorenz :))
i am sure you will do something great,
Good luck to you!:)
12-28-2008, 04:40 PM
I have a little idea sketch here for the hero guy. He's a heavy-geared archer, but I wanna explore a lot more on him. He just doesn't look 'cool' enough yet :P
I' d love a cape for him maybe and the head design needs serious redesigning...
I have a pretty clear image in my head for the final illustration already.
Thanks a lot for the comments, Posh, beelow, Rupy, Ataulfo, krypt, rawwad, stylize, djamadj!!
hey! nice to see you here. love your work man, cant wait to see what you come up with.
12-29-2008, 05:01 AM
Amazing concept there. I love how the Centipede is trying to out go the Warrior. Amazing stuff here!
Good Luck!
12-29-2008, 06:34 AM
Good concept! , I like to see more ;)
12-29-2008, 04:45 PM
I knew you´d be participating here, too...!
I expect something epic from you =)
Oh my, i just entered the challenge a few seconds ago, can´t you even wait until i made my first post...?! =P
Well, i know i´m a bit late, but you don´t seem to have gotten very far yet either, right?
Okay, let´s both give our best! YOSH! =)
12-29-2008, 05:35 PM
here's another sloppy Hidesato doodle.
Lol, I have never paid less attention to my line quality, but it felt extremely relaxing :) should try that more often...
I like the shoulders, not sure about the head yet.
Slav, mrpeace, neurolinked - thanks!
Vyse: lol, I simply said 'Guten Tag'! :P Yeah, let's give our all!
12-29-2008, 11:25 PM
Holy Hell, just learned that the deadline is on Jan 12th! O_O
Yet another Hidesato idea, mixing previous designs. Still not crazy/unique enough for my taste...
I think I will need to design the Centipede on the fly once I start with the illustration.
01-04-2009, 07:26 PM
I had been carrying around this image in my head for quite some time.
This is 'kinda' what I had in mind.
I am trying to have dynamic and heavily distorted poses and proportions.
The figure is still a stand-in without any design whatsoever.
That centipede is meant to lash it's arms towards the archer furrowing through the soil... or so that's the idea. :P
Wanna add lots of speedy motion on the ground. Not too sure about color yet.
Hey hideyoshi, great stuff you got here.
I love the dynamics of the shot and the colours are lovley! Keep at it.. Looks pretty damn good
01-05-2009, 12:09 PM
great dynamic shapes. I'm looking foreward to see what you are going to come up with.
01-05-2009, 12:21 PM
Strong sketch, Hide! I really like the dynamic and action going on there. Has a great potential and i'm sure you will use it. And to make sure you do or at least give some tips, i point out the composition... The Archer and the scorpion like monster begin and end exactly at the same points. So, not only for composition but also for supporting the dramatic situation the hero is in, i would suggest you to make him smaller. As for the colors... it's all about taste, but i would chose a darker more "serious" palette. The violet/blue/yellow combination seems too clean and sci-fi-ish, what of course works well for you normally, as you paint sci-fi mostly, (sorry if i'm wrong!) but in this case you may look for an alternative.
Good Luck! Curious to see the final! :)
01-05-2009, 03:04 PM
A very dynamic image. I love the posing of the character.
01-05-2009, 03:45 PM
I really like this composition: it's super bold, and I like having the character so large and such an extreme camera angle. I completely agree with Dario's comments on the palette right now: What about trying a lot of heavy browns and oranges and rust colors? Might work well with an appropriate sun-set sky, and that palette is so much more Steampunk. (Don't forget the Steampunk part of the painting! :) ) Anyhow, good luck with the rest!
01-06-2009, 10:31 PM
Here is a messy color update, thanks to the valuable crit from Dario and Walrus! Great input, guys! I also think this works better. I might see if I make some more changes though...
Dario: yeah, I was well aware about the identical size relations. I had actually already scaled up the Centipede. I simply don't want to scale the archer down as I like how prominent he is in the picture. I also kinda want to establish a connection to the archer for the viewer.
walrus: thanks a lot! Yeah, I won't forget the Steampunk aspect of course. :) Glad you like the composition!
mrpeace, naito, ewkn: thanks a bunch, guys!
Hope, I will be determined enough to finish this... :/ still hoping for a deadline extension...
01-06-2009, 11:03 PM
Hi! Very good colors!
But i think composition is too quiet, because both figures have same weight.
Good luck Hideyoshi!!!
01-06-2009, 11:11 PM
love the angle & everything, seems like something i would do
01-06-2009, 11:58 PM
Love this version. The color is perfect.
The right shoulder is bit out of place; i know you knew that.
All in all Great work!
01-07-2009, 10:47 AM
Lovely angle! Go for it~
01-07-2009, 09:39 PM
Some work I managed to do today.
I changed the general shape of the Centipede, but the design is very undeveloped still.
Mirzoyan: thanks a lot! You're the 2nd person to point that out. I scaled up the Centipede now :)
omoro, krypt: thanks a lot :)
cabertevon: thanks for the crits. Yeah, I haven't even touched the figure yet :P
01-08-2009, 04:22 AM
wow dude...what a sweet, sweet composition. It plays awesome with the colours you've got going on. I will for sure be watching your progress. Good luck, man!
01-10-2009, 07:00 AM
I painted up the mountain ridge and did some prelim loose design which will surely be changed...
The remaining 2 days I need to power through! o_O
domoarigato: arigato, dude! :D
01-10-2009, 12:33 PM
Wow thats cool... quick paint it up! only 2 days left... ahhhhhhgh! ;)
That's very nice composition! Take care about the face, should look at the beast not in othere way.Best to you to finish on time!
01-10-2009, 04:21 PM
still undeciced about design for the lower body. I am ok with the upper body, but it' still not done as well...
Not sure about the top hat and the scarf thing either. :P
Still soo much to do >_<
dunno if I can make it.
Thanks a lot, coldrum, adib, airflow! :)
jpedro: yeah, the idea is actually to have him look from the corner of his eye instead having his head turned towards the centipede. But anyway, I am far from being done with the face!
I certainly don't want him to interact with someone else off frame though... :P
Thank you very much for the crits!
01-10-2009, 06:14 PM
i absolutely love the colors and the angle of this. the thing that i find a bit unnatural is that the archer is not looking at what he is shooting at right now...other than that, it's awesome.
i guess you wanted to be able to show some of his face...what if he was looking out of the left side of the canvas screaming an order or sth. to someone outside the picture...that way you could show his face with some expression and indicate a little story element...hmmm, just thinking.
anyways, it looks great!
01-10-2009, 07:32 PM
I love the angle, lighting and dynamics of this work.
01-11-2009, 03:08 AM
very nice composition. very strong emotionally.
i would just comment on the face - and I'm probably not the first one to do that.
the guy should be looking at what he's aiming at. - unless it is on purpose and there is something else to look at in the same time.
01-11-2009, 11:37 AM
phew, I am dying! So much left to do T_T
Haven't even started on rendering that bloody Centipede...
01-11-2009, 06:06 PM
ok, that's it for today. Staring at the image all day long and you get enough of it at some point D:
01-11-2009, 07:26 PM
hey nice going, i like the character change.
01-11-2009, 07:46 PM
Viel Glück !
01-11-2009, 10:05 PM
Zer Good !
01-11-2009, 11:10 PM
omoro, visionmaster2: thanks a lot! :)
yakonusuke: thanks again for your crits, Jakob! I tried to fix it in the best way possible ;)
01-13-2009, 06:24 AM
Hey very nice composition, i really like the dinamics in your image.
Why have you supress the flying stones? They were adding some nice movement.
Good luck with the dead line
01-13-2009, 08:18 AM
this is spectecular and very well done. I like it very, but:
why is he looking straight ahead instead of aiming and looking towards the monster!?
However, best of luck to you too!!
01-13-2009, 09:41 AM
centipede is coming along nicely, love the way it recedes back into space. i also really like the choices you made on the design of the archers lower body.
great stuff and godspeed with all the way to the end :)
01-13-2009, 04:53 PM
bo ei.. echt schönes teil was du da bastelst oder eher schon gebastelt hast.. aber es wirkt ein wenig so als würde der gute starr vor sich hin schaun, das irritiert ein wenig.. aber ansonsten echt gut.. wie immer
01-13-2009, 05:21 PM
This is looking really nice. I love the angle. The character is very nice and the cloths are great. My only issue is the hand holding the bow string back seams a little strange or small.
01-13-2009, 06:23 PM
This is coming together really well, looks good :). Nice you have some more days to finish it, can´t wait to see the end result. I´m not sure if I quite like that you see his face, it seems weird that he is looking away from the "monster". I think it would get more impact if he looked into the picture.
my steampunk (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=278&t=696903&highlight=rasmus)
01-15-2009, 02:22 PM
wicked and hard perspective, nice. I think you should pay more attention to bow. greetz.
01-15-2009, 02:42 PM
Good work on this one, really like ti, but one question remains: What myth/legend is this?
01-17-2009, 03:46 PM
started detailling :)
Gonna finish the image up today and tomorrow.
01-17-2009, 03:53 PM
Mischeviouslittleelf: thanks! :) It's a japanese legend about a hero named Hidesato who went and killed the giant Centipede with an arrow dipped in his own saliva. It's a pretty straight forward story, much like David vs Goliath...
mant_raz: thanks! Yeah, I initially wanted to have some interesting mechnisms and design going on for the bow, but I think this will do... I might still change it up some though :)
berggren, Dekartek, Arturfast: *sigh. I posted that close up of his face earlier. I think you should be able to tell that he is actually looking at the centipede, only from the corner of his eye without turning his head too much. But I am kinda getting sceptic about whether it's all that clear because I am still getting comments like yours ;P
Thanks a lot, guys!
Guilome: ah yeah, I only forget to switch on that layer earlier! Will add those of course in the final! Thanks!
jpedro, Lah: thanks a lot!
01-17-2009, 06:14 PM
I love the power of your composition. The gears in the head are amazing! Before I read your paragraph on your inspiration, I thought of the sand worms from Dune. I wish you good luck!
01-17-2009, 09:02 PM
another pass of detailling, I added some sharp smoke.
Last touch-ups tomorrow!
dogeOrBURN: thanks kindly! :)
01-18-2009, 11:45 AM
you can pull it of. keep pushing till tomorrow.
hoffentlich klappts noch ;)
01-18-2009, 03:33 PM
I think this is it. I can't be bothered to make any more changes :D
(uploadging another WIP instance although this is final, so it won't shrink down so much if clicked on)
ah well, just seeing that it didn't work.
01-18-2009, 03:46 PM
This is the tale of Hidesato, a brave archer who was asked by the Dragon King to free the Dragon kingdom from the monstrous man-eating Steam-Centipede which was wreaking havoc.
Thus he went and shot the monster by dipping an arrow in his own saliva and shooting into the Centipede's inner sensitive steam mechanism.
01-19-2009, 08:31 AM
Heh, that's some quick painting there :P . Looks pretty good; but yeah..doesn't look like he's looking at the centipede (probably because of the monocle), although i can see him looking at the centipede from the corner of his other eye. Any reason he'd not looking directly at his target?
01-19-2009, 09:00 AM
Very nice work - I like this one a lot. The stylisation of the characters works well as does the colour palette.
