First time to join a challenge in CGSociety and Im still a newbie but trying myself to challenge other newbie,pro people here.

So here's my concept. The Excalibur sword,I come up with gears and O'meters, energy bar for some SteamPunk look of it as the challenge sez.

Any additions? Thanks in advance.

Yeeeeh thats a nice idea! I threw away an sketch of excalibur... i wanted to take this legend at the beggining. Did you know that the real legend about excalibur is not about the sword in the stone ? In the original tale, they threw the sword to the water and the spirit of the lake take the sword back (yea they made some pawn shop in the lake) but there is nothing about a sword in a stone, that was a deformation of the original legend.

Peace :)

I love the idea, the mechanical sword :), can't wait to see the result.

Liquid, in Tombraider 8, they say that there are actually two swords, one from the lake (Excalibur) and one from the stone (bears no name, it was just there to appoint a King through a trial).

Yet another nice concept. I like the sword design.

@Twinsnakes: thanks.
@Samsanca and LiquidD: Maybe along the way I'll change a bit in the concept, the one with the lake or in the stone. It is much better with stone as majority of us knows the tale in the stone, but thanks for the information.

Actually, the concept is same with the lake mix with from the stone. The sword was stored in the old abandoned warehouse were the sword was forgotten by the people until the time come to take trial to pull out the sword from the stone.

And that the stone would be a piece of device that would attached to the sword that the gears inside the sword give purpose to lock it to the ground.

@samsanca

If The Super-Cute-Sexy-Rich Angelina Jolie said there are two swords and no pawn shop on the lake it must be right! With so many childs and two brains she cannot be wrong :) lmao

@nash88

Yeah the g-lock system of the sword is a really good idea i like it, there was allways something about excallibur that was not really clear for me... How a stone can hold a sword ??... hmmm Now i know it! It was a steam sword from the beggining, that's why the industrial revolution happened at england :)

Pushing up things a little bit, could the excalibur sword have some gun attached to it ? It would give it a touch of humour and some deadly stuff for the middle age.

Peace :)

As mentioned above, the sword that was in the stone was not Excaliber. Exaliber was given to Arthur by the Lady in the Lake.

I like your steam sword/stone idea, the one thing that's bothering me is the gears in the sword. It simply looks like you put a bunch of gears into the sword for the sake of trying to make it more steampunkish but without putting any thought into what they might do.

nash88
11-18-2008, 10:33 PM
Legacy40k:as LiquidD said earlier before I implemented it in my Concept # 2.

The gears in the sword are mechanism needed for G-Lock System or Gear Lock. Like the sword in the stone can't explained how difficult in to pull the sword from the stone. And the G-LOCK system is the answer. The G-LOCK gears attached to the Sword.

Ah oH! Might change the name of the sword so it would follow the correct tale. And what kind of sword is that, I mean the name of the sword?

But anyways, thanks for the comment and feedback.

I've research about the King Arthur's magical sword from the stone, which the formerly known name of it is "Caliburnus". which I get it from here (http://students.mountainstate.edu/students/rsarver/index.htm).

The name not far from the word "Excalibur" by deleting the word "Ex" and add "nus" at the end. Well the name I think is the right for it. And I still stick to my concept and forget about the lake, now back to the old warehouse/urban or in the nature.

Nice work on the scene so far!
The gears kinda make me think of something like in DMC4...How Nero could rev his sword...just a thought.

Really like this concept and the scene is coming on nicely, good luck with it. Looking forward to seeing your sword model, the gears inside it is a great concept.

@ balfs21: me too that's why I chose this story, anyways I change the name of the sword to Caliburns or Caliburnus for it is the right sword for the stone.
@ BOSAH: after trying to put materials for g-lock system next stop is for the sword.

What's the best background?
- In the nature, with green grass and background of the castle?
- In the old warehouse were my first concept was?
- others, any ideas? specify.

Tricky one, I'll have the same problem soon deciding a background. I'd be tempted to go with the grass/castle background to place it more into the myth.

Ok...let me help :thumbsup:
Considering your work so far...I would choose a MYSTERIOUS/HAUNTING look for your image. That means, dark tones in textures and a worn of look.

Try adding RUST in your textures as well. Adding few broken pipes with steam spraying out would work. BUT on the main point focus a SPOT LIGHT to the Main Element of your image while Back lightning others.

Good Luck!

mr peace, thanks for your suggestion, we have the same idea this was one of my ideas for the theme for my entry. The one with rusty, old, steamy theme. As I've said my model is not done yet. What if there is a large fan or exhaust fan I think above were the light source come from to give light from below focusing on to the main element in the scene.

Um...Now I feel like the Sword is not that powerful (because of the hollowness). I liked it before. Hey- There are some nice designs on swords in the Final Fantasy movie. Do a search...and get inspired!

I really recommend to do that sword AGAIN! Its your work anyway - your choice!

Good Luck!

nash88

What hollowness? And what it makes powerful?

Yeah swords from FF are really nice. I got inspired by Nero's Sword in DMC4 which kinda like steampunkish. hehe

I like your sword-in-the stone, it's almost cricket-bat shaped, which works well with the steampunk theme too. Would some Victorian bridge strut/girder shapes go nicely in that gap in the middle?

(Also, thanks for looking at my work!)
