looks heavy.

The design is nice, but not very functional I think... Who would need huge speakers like that, when you probably want to use headphones anyway, if you're not at home.

d8ed
06-14-2003, 09:12 PM
well this thing isnt just a portable gaming system.. it'll support MPEG4 video and MP3s. so the speakers would help in that sense if you wanted to use it as portable jukebox or watch a movie in the car or whatever. you can load it up with the USB 2.0 connection on the back. i was even thinking of adding a PCMCIA type slot on the side for later expansion.. maybe a wireless adapter or an ethernet adapter so you can play your friends online or in a group.

the fact that it looks heavy is definitely bothering me though.. the more i cram into it the worst it's gonna get

its really cool. i like the colour

just a little critic, the buttons(especially that really big white one)
arent that good. make them flurescent so anyone can play in the dark

great work love the design

and yes, the speakers are too big and make the person who plays less confortable with those 2 big shelves standing in middle air dont u think? headphones or mini side speakers coming from the machine will probably be the best idea.

good luck 4 ya on the contest

Nice Design! But same feeling about the speakers..

And one question.. why is your cdrom tray square?

d8ed
06-15-2003, 02:14 AM
it's some new 1.8 gig minidisc that's encased in a cartridge according to the press release. at first i thought it was square and since i'd never seen a tray loaded minidisc i just winged it. but i just found an image of the new UMD (Universal Media Disc) on this site here.

it's the center image.

i realize this tray probably wont work in real life.. but i have no idea how this new UMD will function so i'm taking some artistic freedom on this one.

nice design. I dig the tray for the discs!!

Some crits though;

I can't seem to find the shoulder buttons which are pretty much a nessesary feature on a controlpad.

The plastic look very much reminds me of the sega gamegear and not of sony products. Maybe it's a bit to shiny??

Those speakers are pretty neat to look at but they might not be to functional. Built-in speakers?

Now all you need to do is slap on a big psp logo and drop these pics on some game boards and see what the people over there have to say about the design. You might get some interresting feedback. :wip:

its looks really good, but its looks like your wrists might break when u play it:cool: looks good though

i forgot to post an image of the shoulder buttons. they're below and pushed with your index fingers.

the overall material isnt quite SONY but i definitely dig it. i might wanna switch it to a silver type of color like the SONY Clie when i'm done. i'll keep it black for now because it makes it easy to see.

it's definitely bothering me how thick it is in the back and i'm trying to think of a way to balance it without making it look all skinny and weak.

and as for the speakers.. that's a tough one. i really like the fact that they swing out like that but i'm aware that's probably not practical at all. built-in speakers would solve that but take away some of the appeal.. for me at least. and i'm also trying not to have to remodel the thing =) i have two weeks left for the contest and i just had an idea that might work.. think switchblade phone from the Matrix.

and i actually considered going over to www.pspinsider.com and posting an image of it in their forums. pretend it's an official design and see how much they freak out.

d8ed
06-17-2003, 12:04 AM
damn do i hate remodeling stuff. ugh. had to do a ton of stuff over again. anyhow.. i think i'm pleased with it. with the other design i wanted to put a screen on the back of the speakers so that you could play music with it like a walkman through the headphones without having to open it. this design has the screen right in the center and partially exposed. also this way you can play music through the speakers without opening it up.

yay or nay? better or worse?

-This was out in the market

-I could afford it :p

Looking good! Keep it going! :scream:

Nice rework you did on this piece. Better design of the speakers now. Makes it possible to scroll through a list of music tracks on the display while listening, good.

i've allready seen an earlier version on xsibase from you

there's something missing on nearly all models in the contest...the L1+2,R1+2 buttons...i think, they should be implemented...at least one L and one R i'd say

the model looks really cool, and nice detailed ;) though the buttons haven't the PS-style in my opinion
and the analog sticks should be rubbered, to have a good grip...just like the dualshock controller

i prefer the first version of speakers....cause they protect the display from scratches...in the second version the display is'nt fully covered....would look funny if the center of the screen is scratched and beside it's not, hehe

and on the on/off-switch you could put a green or blue(i'd prefer blue) led, instead of the white shape

Looking very good, but wouldn't the magnetic radiation of the speakers **** up the screen?

d8ed
06-17-2003, 07:59 PM
what are L1+2,R1+2 buttons? i have trigger buttons on the underside of the body. i just havent rendered them because the bottom isnt quite done yet.

magnets would only affect a CRT monitor or a TV.. they wouldnt affect an LCD screen. i'm pretty sure at least.. right?

as far as the joysticks not rubbered.. i havent started on the texturing quite yet. it's just enough to show the shape.

i'm definitely thinking of redoing the buttons to make them more like a playstation controller.

as far as the screen getting scratched.. yeah that's true.. although i definitely need an exposed screen to be able to play music without having to open the thing up. never thought about the scratches though.. maybe i'll raise the edges around it up a bit. or make another slider on top of this one that completely closes when the speakers are in but is transparent to allow viewing of the screen. it would slide on top of the other slider maybe. but that might get a bit too complicated. ;)

as far as the on/off switch.. i wanted it to be a fingerprint sensor. hence the white color. it'll need to be more translucent later on. then again it doesnt really have to be white..

i've never used a PS2.. is there some kind of light that comes on when you turn it on? what color is it?

the concept is very cool, and the model too.. but in real life, its too big for be a portable playstation, look the gba sp, its small

But I like it

yeah it's got dibs on the cool flip open design alright. i didnt want this thing to be a copy of the Nintendo design. plus there's the fact that Sony 6 buttons, two joysticks, and a 4 button pad while Nintendo only uses 4 buttons and a cross shaped pad.

also you're forgetting that the Nintendo GBA SP only has a 2.9" LCD at 240x160 while the new Sony PSP will have a 4.5" LCD at 480x272.

it's also called PSP which stands for Playstation Portable so i assume it'll be quite a bit larger.

it'll also be using lots of the same chips that are already in use in the PS2 to maintain a low selling price.

i still have about 13 days left for the contest so i might surprise you with a folding version =)

this thing being due out in fourth quarter 2004.. i just wish they'd hurry up and give us a clue as to what it'll look like.

it has 4 shoulder buttons..two on the left(L1 and L2) and two on the right(R1 and R2)
here's (http://digilander.libero.it/ferrarafrancesco/events/playstation2/) an image of the controller

yes...i also thought of a transparent cover, but i had no idea how to attach it, without make looking it bad or being comforable

yes....it has a green led on the power button, and a blue on the open/close button

damn that's a shitload of buttons =) i just finished up the remote control unit. it'll have 4 buttons. play/pause, stop, next, and previous. it's held in by a magnet and the release is on the side. it'll push the thing off the magnet and out of it's socket. i also molded the whole pad into the main body. boy was that a pain in the ass. i'll add two more buttons and work on the bottom tomorrow.

and thanks for that link springgreenhair. it's great reference. i didn't know Austrians spoke Italian =)

yes, hehe...but in some of todays console games you'd wish, you'd even a few more(though the dualshock2, which comes with the ps2 has also L3 and R3...cause the analog sticks aren't just sticks, they are also buttons)

you could add the buttons on the bottom...so you would have a place for your index fingers, to give the psp a better handling, and it's safetier when going around with it and playing
i hope, you understand what i mean...don't know how to explain it

no problem ;)
though i was 4-6 times in italy, i don't speak italian(i just know a few words, like grazie, prego, quanta costa, and so on...i think, i can even understand more french than italian, hehe)...i've searched in google for pictures....and this was one of the few really usable pics

btw...i like the new button design much better
it's way more playstation-style ;)

HAH! sweet! that CD spinning in thin air is awesome. too bad this guy doesnt have one single decent res image that's not photoshopped to death and hosted by fileplanet.

our designs are fairly similar. maybe i should email him and tell him i built a new one. see if he'll fall for the renders.

thanks for the link Reaper21x. i definitely enjoyed it.

bottom. 4 buttons and a memory stick slot right above the buttons.

i could be wrong, but i think the 4 buttons aren't very ergonomically placed...there's a good ergonomy for the index fingers, but to push one of the buttons, you really must have very flexible fingers...i'd put the buttons on the outside, and not on the inside...hope you understand, what i mean

d8ed
06-19-2003, 08:04 PM
no i'm not quite sure what you're saying. outside as in on the side of the unit or as in something else? if you mean on the outside as in the buttons sticking out.. they are. maybe the image is hard to see.

here's a closeup.

springgreenhair
06-19-2003, 08:31 PM
no...i mean the buttons would be better reachable when they are there where you put your index fingers

d8ed
06-19-2003, 08:34 PM
but that is where i'd put my index fingers. if i were holding the unit my thumbs would be on top to hit the 4 buttons, pad and joysticks, and my index and middle fingers would be curled up under and hitting these buttons. right?

its cool, but for a portable console it is WAY too huge man

if sony makes one that big, gameboy will stay in the lead for sure

d8ed
06-19-2003, 10:35 PM
yeah but can nintendo play MPEG4 video and MP3s? and can gameboy play gamecube games on a 4.5" screen?

i realize it's bigger but it's a portable playstation2. cant realistically be the same size as the gameboy advanced sp.

it's definitely huge though ;)

hmm.. would it help if i made the controller detachable from the main body? this way you can prop up the screen and speakers and sit back and play wirelessly? or play it attached?

this is fun. NOT realistic at all. but I'm not trying to sell this design either. think of it like the homermobile of portable gaming systems. i just need to add a cupholder and ashtray and i'll be set.
