Hello all, now that the deadline has been moved to the 19th, I have decided to participate in the challenge as well. I know there is just one week to go, but I like working under pressure, so here I am. I chose the legend of the sunken city Atlantis. I like the thought that an ancient city exists somewhere beneath our urban surface, entirely unknown to us. Steampunk theme: As in my opinion, steampunk is always pictured in the same way, be it in the entertainment industry or in other disigns, i want to show a different aspect of the steampunk idea with my picture. To my idea: I imagined: What would it be like if a Victorian city existed underneith the streets of Paris, if the Eiffel tower as we know it were just a small part of a Victorian construction? Here are some thumbs to this idea.

A black/white mood sketch.

I will use this sketch as a reference for my upcoming pencil drawing.
this kind of image helps me, in an early phase, to find details and to improve the composition.

Blue drawing for my inner eye to see all the details and also to set vanishing points. The next step wil be the finished pencil line drawing. Cya

I like the idea, and the lines are looking nice. It will be fun to see where you take it. I hope you can get done! Are you planning on adding people on the streets?

MR
01-14-2009, 07:08 PM
thanks.
i thought about adding people but maybe it would destroy the silent and abandoned atmmosphere...
maybe i will add some kind of object on the railways....

...im in a hurry i know.... but i like that

my line drawing will be finished soon and it has much more details.

greets

Ooooooh underwater!
Well maybe if you make them like.... squiggly lines? Like it's a little difused because of the current? I don't know if I will make sense. Sorry in advance. But you're doing so well already. Also.... Maybe if you add a little more brightness to the light reflections that you have on some of the surfaces? Animal life usually seem to thrive in these settings as well. And something even overtake the area like the shells and plants that grow on top of things

But I think if you look at photos of underwater tours, like ship wrecks etc, some things aren't so difused, the closer you get to the camera. You can also add floating elements that clearly give an idea of the water being there, like some things that defy gravity because of the water. Maybe that helps, and maybe not. But I like the colors you picked and the topic. And it's the Eiffel Tower! : )

very cool. love the colors, very dark and thick. awesome attention to detail. some rays of light coming through the gaps in the architecture could give it some drama. it's a great environment, but is it more than just a set piece?

i would like to see something that brings it to life instead of just a dead empty underwater city. i know it's a bit late to conceive a character or narrative, but what if one of the signs were still illuminated, or a doorway/window was lit from within? something like that would definitely give the piece a focus point. what about fish? any aquatic life?

MR
01-17-2009, 10:35 AM
yeah your right i definitely have to add something more so that it becomes more than just a set piece. But i dont know what. your ideas are good but i thought about something that connects with the myth of atlantis.... any ideas ?

..well
now i need a beer.

some aquatic life and also some light rays are still to come....
and the damn eye catcher.... hmm

ideas and comments are welcome!!

good question. what makes Atlantis identifiable is that it's greek/roman and underwater, any classic city underwater could be Atlantis. but this is steampunk-Atlantis, er Paris...

hmmm... some art nouveau statues might give it that Atlantean look while maintaining your specific period. also, you could reference actual iconic statues from Paris, like the monument in 'Place de la Republique.' good luck.

also, i think a lone giant manta flying above the track in the mid-ground would be killer.:buttrock:

Wonderful!
You did great! I like it.

Are you looking for more storytelling elements?

Maybe something magical? I am tempted to say duracell... >.> You know like one little last robot with cute vintage style that somehow still works a little... Maybe because the Atlantians were such great builders >.>... I'm not sure how that would work in that story, since it's underwater...
The street lamps made me think of when people would light the street lamps manually... Maybe it could be trying to still do that but nothing is working anymore. And I think your lamp posts would work well as a storytelling prop. It doesn't have to be a light. I think the broken one is perfect for that...
Or maybe something trying to fix the letter signs that are getting undone. Or I don't know..
I think whatever it is, if something was somehow still working after all was gone... That would make the scene even more lonesome, because now we'd have to feel bad for that one robot or toy or thing that was left behind.
Or maybe... a small scale floating photograph with something really joyful, like little kids playing >.>.... To make it more tragic.

Maybe you already thought about all that.
Good luck!!

...thank you for thinking with me. i appreciate very much  . i like the duracell-theme. i have finally an idea in my head, but first i have to seep over it..

Wow, this is looking really amazing. I love the style and the detailing is looking really nice. I am excited to see the aquatic life added. Are you going to be adding light rays comming from the surface?

this is lookin very nice.. you know what i would suggest adding small detail like plankton or something like that i think would add to underwater feeling.. and do you checked some ref's for underwater?

vagis
01-18-2009, 10:40 AM
also more vegetation on those sharp edges would add to underwater

Story and background

An innovative interpretation of steampunk.

Since steampunk has always been represented in the same manner, I have taken this challenge as an opportunity to create an innovative approach to the theme. My work transposes the Victorian era into the present days.
For this venture, the Legend of Atlantis, the sunken city, seemed the perfect starting point.
I imagined how it would be, if the Eiffel tower as we know it were just a small part of a long forgotten construction built underneath today's urban surface; And maybe?there is really more than we imagine below ground.

cool image... i love all the details on your image and the story too... your painting style made me think of the Water Color based traditional paintings... I believe that science can not explain everything...personally...it's to weak to give everything on this planet an 'answer'...haha...cheers! and good luck~
