Ehehe someone else called by the lure of the steampunk challenge, eh? Great to see your entry here Nick, looking forward to seeing your concepts, I'm sure if ever there was a challenge made for you, this would be it!

It's about time I got off my bottom and got on with this. Probably going to go with an idea I had about mechanising Charon the boatman, so that the Victorians could get across the river Styx in style. Of course like a lot of such toys, it'll only operate if you insert appropriate coinage. Not remotely close to a composition yet. That'll emerge later on.
No doubt this will have been done to death already (sorry about the punning), but as I've not been keeping tabs on the other entries much, I've not spotted it as such yet.

Think I have a better idea what I want to do with this idea now. About time too. Now it is just a matter of making it work in a composition and taking it forward.

Nice myth, Nick - instantly recognizable for what it is - and i love the character design. I think the composition gets a bit confusing around his midsection where you've got the skinny midsection and the oar all crossing, and not too far from the skinny arms. Maybe making the waist thicker could help that read better a bit? Also, there's a bit of a "disconnect in technology" between his realistic face and the mechanical torso. Maybe it just needs more mechanical parts to drive that aspect home: More gears never hurt a steampunk piece! :)

Yep - There's still a ton of stuff to sort out, not least being the mechanical android Charon. Then there's the guest list for who he'll be taking this time. . .

As everyone else has said: LOVE the concept (especially the coin deposit in the hand). Agree with Michael on the confusion with the oar as well, but I think if you move it in front of his coat that might solve the problem.
Looking forward to watching this develop!

Yes, there's a lot of sorting out to do, especially around Charon's torso, where it's tangled with the oar/rudder thing. I've tinkered a bit with it, but am bound to need to do more. That and a thousand other bits . . .
