And we're on the road... I guess we all know the myth about Atlantis. The ancient city that sunk into the ocean. In this concept the city is in steam punk style (of course), and the people are so advanced, that they are actually able to prevent their fate. Using their technology they build a big freezing tower in the hope of saving the city. And just before a giant wave is about to roll over the city, they activate the tower, and the wave is suddenly frozen and stopped.

MichaelZHsee: Thank you :) This doesn't look steam punky at all! I really need to some designs when modeling the buildings.

Just to show you that things are in progress. Here's some bridge elements. I think that textures will be more important than polygons, because most buildings will be away from the camera.

JackZhang: Thank you, Jack :) Yes, I remember all the troubles Donglu had to face with the concept. But I think it ended pretty well :) I'll do my best to give my support to the both of you.

SNoWs: Thank you :) If you refer to my polycount, there's no trouble yet. I have rendered much more polyhell than this on my system. But in the end terrible things can happen for my cpu and RAM ;)

thebest: Thanks, I will :)

Donglu-LittleFish: Thank you, my friend :) The real issue here is to mix the beauty of Atlantis with the raw "dirty" look of steam punk. Not an easy task!

Hello ! I like the street lamp with the spherical design on the page before. Look original to me.
I keep an eyes on your WIP, it look interresting. Full 3D ?

MartinNielsen
11-17-2008, 08:43 PM
DeeVad: Thank you :) I was looking at some pictures of classic street lamps in London, and I was very inspired of them. I think there's a lot of steam punk in there designs. This scene will be in full 3d. Maybe if time is getting short, I'll paint some figures as well.

I know there's not much to give feedback on right now. That's the the downside for me doing 3d as opposed to 2d. It's much faster to obtain a good starting point when doing paintings.

Thanks for the ref idea, and for the 2D Vs 3D, the fact is on my thread I would like to tweak a bit the view angle of my scene. Arghhhhhhh ! I can't without destroy all. This is my pain in 2D.
May be I will start over mine with a 3D dummy, I don't know for the moment. 3D is "Slowly but Surely"

A Steampunk Atlantis? Brilliant! I'm surprised no one else though of that: It's so obvious and original at the same time. Great concept so far. It might be fun to push the shapes of things a bit further: This may be steampunk, but Atlantis wasn't settled by Londoners. How would the Atlantean take on the technology of the era differ from those of Victorian England? Just some thoughts, but keep going with it. Good luck and have fun!

MartinNielsen
11-18-2008, 01:45 PM
Ferx: Thank you, buddy :) Always ready with some encouragement and support

DeeVad: He he he, "slowly but surely". I'll remember that one ;)

walrus: Thanks, ace :) To be honest I was a bit worried about have many Atlantis-themes, I had to compete with in this challenge ;) I really rushed to be the first to present an Atlantis-idea. But fortunately I'm one of the few in here :)

Hey, I picked Atlantis as well. Will be interesting to see how both our concepts develop and what the similarities and differences will be.

Im focusing on the Militaristic side of the myth (according to wikipedia anyway) .

Loving those bridges, im planning on having some steam trains on large viaducts, and maybe some Zepelins. Love the idea of freezing the ocean to prevent the flooding!

MartinNielsen
11-22-2008, 06:30 PM
OKMER: Thank you so much :) Yes, according to the myths, the Atlantis people were very advanced. So steam punk should blend very well with this ancient theme. Still it demands a lot of attention to art direction of course.

nwiz25: Hey buddy:), thanks for comming by. I was beginning to wonder where you were ;) I'm still working with this freezing device. I plan to nail the block-out of all important elements first.

MartinNielsen
11-23-2008, 11:34 AM

balfs21
11-23-2008, 12:04 PM
Sunset would be better, being the end of the day, it would also symbolize the possible end of the civilization?! Also the sky is more moody at sunset whereas sunrise is more crisp and clean!

Try to differ each side of these tesla arms - for instance one would have 3 wires, or smaller bulb.
The other thing - such a hudge tesla wouldnt fit to your concept - i suggest decreasing size of barrels at the bottom.
Great model after that!

Cool test my friend, love the lighting mood and color for the tesla coil. Perhaps some lights (more orange and yellows) for the turbins and other parts, to see that the tesla is in operation and the spheres a bit more brilliant with self light, only a comment :)

So you guys just have to wait a bit longer ;) Regarding the ice wave border, I just watched the incredible Diablo3 cinematic trailer again. And in one shot you see a city almost built into a big rock wall. Something similar in my scene could work, with buildings partly swallowed by the wave.

Hi Martin, I have always been keep an eye on your thread, and your efforts do show up with every update you make. It's fantastic seeing the city taking form now. Excellent update

I liked the wonderful ice photos referred to in the post above. I can't remember the actual science behind that kind of thing and have not seen those particular photos before, but as I understand it, the different colours of the ice are caused when water drips into something like the fissures in a glacier. The captured water contains fewer air bubbles than the surrounding ice and so it freezes in a darker blue colour than the surrounding ice. When that part of the glacier eventually breaks away or begins to melt it reveals those marvelous multicolored ice sculptures.

Or something like that!

However, in your myth, the wave would have been frozen in one hit, so technically the ice would contain a much more consistent amount of air bubbles. Which would make ice of a consistent colour. So I'd personally encourage you to take from those images whatever you think makes a nice image and not worry too much about needing to copy the look of them precisely!

Hi Martin. Just saw your participating in this. Nice too see! Looks really cool. Alot of good progress too. very nice.

Ill just throw some thoughts on this one.. I think it would be cool if the dark-blue sky was covering all the space over the wave, like theres a real friggin storm comming together with the wave. Like all the horizon is just dark and only over the city theres some ligt comming through. Dunno how far you are with composing the picture yet, but would be cool with some close buildings. That way we really see the cool depth your picture have.

Keep it up man! And have a nice christmas.

It just keeps getting better.

I'm glad to read you're almost done with the unwrapping and I'm madly looking forward to seeing how things look texxed up. Still no crits from me. At first I was thinking the energy/lightning things could fan out towards the storm/wave more but the more I think about it the more I think they would shoot straight up first before fanning out and dispersing into the atmosphere - exactly like how you show it.

Even without the tex, this is already a delightful and intriguing image

MartinNielsen
12-24-2008, 11:35 AM
aghill: Hey ol'buddy! :) Thanks for the feedback. This really helps.

A the moment the sun light comes from a very low angle, so it would be harder to seperate the wave from the city. A higher angle could work, but then I couldn't use that orange light color, which goes well with the blue tone in the picture. But I'll do some test renders in any case. The idea is good.

You're absolutely right that some foreground material is needed here. I just hope they'll grant me some more time. A the moment I'm away on holiday, so no updates these days.

Ferx: Thank you for the feedback :) I think if I hold the buildings in yellow, orange and red colors, I could use a less orange colored sunlight and still maintain a good color contrast. That way I can add a cloud shadow that covers most of the wave. It could work.

nash88: Thank you :) Same to you.

Hey Martin I was just scrolling through pages and found your thread. I just missed your thread Dude:) Your Dominance war concept was real cool. And now Steam punkish city looks beautiful. No comments at this stage:D as you have already completed lot of things. Its time to see some texture and lighting:) and you should also hurry as deadline is close.

Kilduff: Thanks :) And happy new year.

CuriousLobster: Thank you :) Yes, I plan to add some people.

madshooter: Thanks, I remember you perfectly :) I don't fear any deadlines though, and I explain that later.

wildcory1: Thank you :)

To everybody: It has been clear to me for some time now, that there is no way, that I'll be able to reach this deadline. Doing a 3d piece like this one is just to much work for me, when I have a fulltime job and a life to live. And I won't deliver an entry, that doesn't reach my own expectations. So yes, I'm out of this challenge. It is of course irritating, because it is the first time, that I have to bail out on these challenges.

This doesn't mean, that I won't finish the piece. I came a long way with this, and I'll keep posting updates until finished. I guess a Choice Award have to be my new goal instead :)

It's a pity you will not be able to finish it in time for the challenge, but looking forward to see complete picture. Good luck!

sorry to hear that Martin. I think our disadvantage is that we made big scenes with lots of models etc. I am trying to wrap up the scene too but its going slowly. Anyway this was my first challenge and I will make more simple scenes next time :)

That's a real shame you won't make the finish on time, Martin, but I fully understand and respect your reasons (I admit that I'm feeling nervous about the deadline too!) The really cool thing is that the progress you've already made has been fantastic. Even in its unfinished state there is a whole lot to like about it and it's been a joy watching it develop. I hope you manage to complete this piece in your own time and wish you a brilliant and successful new year too

To everybody again: ok. I just made the wonderful discovery, that even I can get confused about dates. It seems that during this writing, I have 9 days left and not only 2! Of course this doesn't mean, that I can finish my piece in time for sure. But it sure means, that we can hold the funeral for another week! :) I keep updating, and then let's see what happens.

"I'm not dead yet! Merely a flesh wound!" Well, good to hear it! It's looking nice so far - I love the entire palette. Two things I might suggest for lighting: It might be nice to see some more localized blue light from the electrical arc on the tower touching the rooftops around it. Secondly, the frozen wave isn't quite looking like ice yet - perhaps some more specularity, a bit of light refraction, and maybe even some translucency where it's thinnest? And, just as an idea, if you really get pressed for time, you could move right into Photoshop/Painter and finish it off there faster than making subtle changes and waiting for them to render. (Might add a nice painterly touch to things as well!) Anyhow, good luck!

Hi Martin,

Great concept and modeling,
Walrus is right i think just finishing with photoshop or painter, your general composition is done, just small sugestion/opinion it would be great if you add a bit fog to get deep feeling, and work a little bit with material of wave in frozen, adjust the light over the windows more intensive(overlay photoshop)

i like the first sketch from you, it telling more about your concept because you see really clearly the frozen procces, probably you could add some building which is higher then wave/through the wave to get more dynamic composition,

just have a look"THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW"in google, :)i guess is not bad inspiration for you, good luck!

Irawan: Thanks for the feedback. Always useful.

Ok.. Let's see what I need to do:

1) I need a big cathedral to the left, that is partly swallowed by the wave. That will contribute greatly to composition.

2) I need something more in the background. A couple of zeppeliners could be great, and they don't take too long to do. Some more duplicated buildings can also help here.

3) Some people walking around the bridges. Since they are so small, they can just be textured planes or painted directly i PS.

4) Finishing in PS with various painted effects like smoke from chimneys etc.

And what I would LIKE to have:

1) A train on bridge on the right.

2) Something in the foreground. A character maybe.

I can't see these two things happen.

Added a twin tower cathedral. I think it really add to the drama. Maybe I should add another high building near the wave in the background.

This is really starting to look close to finished. Great work! The only crit I have is a very small one and my guess is you've already noticed it - since the tall towers appeared, it looks like at one point the wave was caught passing through the wall rather than around it. What I'm talking about here only applies to the front of the twin-tower closest to us. Everywhere else the water/ice looks just great. I'd expect it would be a quick fix in Photoshop

hi martin,
one more opinion, the thunder/strong light in the middle must be influence to the surrounding.

the ideas with
1) A train on bridge on the right.
2) Something in the foreground. A character
thats will be great, it will make your picture more interesting!

best,good luck!

mdavid: Thanks my friend :) It's a good thing, that I chose to give it an extra go. I really believe now, that I can get something acceptable out of this. You're right about the ice around the tower. It's a bit hard adjusting the mesh, when I can't see the displacement directly in the viewport.

anoxymus: Thank you :)

madshooter: Thanks man :)

nwiz25: Thank you ol' buddy :)

Irawan: Thanks for the feedback

Actually there is a blue light source above the tower. But it needs a lot more intensity.

Yeah, those two things would be great.

Hi Martin

It is beginning to get together really well. I like your concept and look very much. As mentioned by some of the others, I think you could improve the piece by making more depth in it. For example the bridge on the right side, almost looks like it have the same value the whole way. The part closest to us would probably have some more contrast and darker than the part in the back.

Also I think you could make the ice more icy :), by making the cracks more saturated. As lights go through those cracks it gets more and more saturated and therefore more blue.

Hope you can use some of it. I think you have done a really good job. Can´t wait to see the end result

best regards Rasmus

hey Martin!
Looking really good! The colors are strong and the composition is just right. I only wish it wouldn't look so 3D ish... but that's personal taste. :P
Is the wave meant to look frozen? Because right now, it looks rather stiff... ;)

Hey Martin,

Really cool composition, lighting and mood on your image, like a lot the cathedral building touch :D Think the building behind the bridge can be a bit mall taller to brake the negative space of the sky in that zone, and still thinking about some more bigger foreground elements, only a comment :) Really great work , I know that this image will be awesome. Cheers my friend!!

Using their technology they build a big freezing tower in the hope of saving the city. And just before a giant wave is about to roll over the city, they activate the tower, and the wave is suddenly frozen and stopped.

hi,

i second the idea by ferx about adding some foreground elements. that would add more depth and would make the city look more monumetal.

i cant wait to see the final picture. its one of my vavorites because its not one of this action-packed-hero-scenarios :D

good luck
