Nice being here again. Idea of this challenge fits my current intrests so I'm eager to start
I got 2 concepts for my videos

a) David facing Goliat ( Bible counts?)
b) Minotauros

I'd love to make both :[

Let's get started and best of luck to you!!

11-11-2008, 10:49 AM
Ok my vote goes to Minotaur
This will be a short including

The Minotaur

This is a story draft I drew. Theseus wandering around labyrinth in search for Minotaur. I hope you can catch the idea.

11-12-2008, 01:39 AM
Hehe...well it's a bit difficult to interpret some of the drawings since they're so rough (don't worry..better than I can draw still!)....but I think it makes sense.

So is the minotaur/theseus gonna have steampunk gadgets attached to them or something? Or will the enviroment be the ruins of a massive boiler room complex? Interested to hear how you're going to be fitting the theme into your story :D

11-12-2008, 09:48 AM
Soooooo true I totally suck at fast drawing ;/. Of course I'm planing to give them both some fancy steampowered gadgets. 2 of them are cruical to the story ( steampowered leg spring-catapult and steampowered blade).
Labyrinth is planned to be a iron made maze inside of giand victorian-style hall (full of steam OFC)
I'd better get it started...

11-12-2008, 10:45 PM
Just checking your thread. I've got a similar concept, but I'm doing a still image. I'd really like to see your progress.

Hello I started working on MInotaur model. Depending on source Minotaur is believed to be either a man with bull's head or bull with man's "top". I choose to have the second option. This is still an early wip but gives an idea of what is my goal.
best to you!

11-24-2008, 08:54 PM
Interesting take on the Minotaur design. I've not heard that version.

11-25-2008, 12:53 AM
great work on the modeling.
But i think the legs for the minotaur might be too short.
And i would go for the bull's head which makes it more interesting in contrast to the human character. Just a bull's body probably won't be enough to identify it to a minotaur. Unless the human head has horns and then it's not fully a man's top and bull's body. So many questions and so little time :banghead:

11-25-2008, 10:26 PM
Thanks !
@miketche Hardly any has but it's true .Secondly It's useful for my story and we also have another MInotaur in image contest so I don't want do double ideas etc.

@Nothingness I'm still redesigning it a bit but short legs f.i. are very typical of bulls.
I want to give it a sense of mass and strength. I posted wip without armour so it's hard to see at the moment. I also want to have fire & steam and smoke as defying elements of his character. But it will take time before anyone see it

Thank you for comments:thumbsup:
Best to you!

11-29-2008, 01:43 AM
it looks very good, congratulations!!!

There is a chance I can make it tomorrow.

Best to you !

12-23-2008, 11:23 PM
I wasn't feeling the character designs so much, but that maze looks amazing. Best of luck!

I want to show you some wip renders from inside of the maze just so you could feel the mood I want to achive.
Best to you peoples!!

12-26-2008, 10:47 AM
Looks great. The only change I would suggest is to bring down the reflectivity a bit. With the amount of rust/grime on the walls and floor, it suggests a much more muted enviornment.

12-26-2008, 10:56 AM
Thank you Scott!
You're right it might look kinda strange now The only thing missing is steam all over. I want it to be wet and full of steam but I'm planing to add it during post work!

01-08-2009, 12:54 PM
Great job!!
Amazing models and environments!

01-08-2009, 04:27 PM
Just wanted to drop by and see how things were going. Looking real good. The environments are just fantastic. Looking forward to seeing some animation tests if you post any.

01-08-2009, 06:19 PM
Thanks for steping by mates!
I've just been animating a shot
It's the second week of animation right now and I've done ~1:30s so far.
Everything goes fine luckly I have no problems with rigs etc. It turned out some shots needs a lot lot lot more time to render at quality I wanted and this also after I some tricks ware used ;/
But it can't be too easy;)
I'll hope I manage to post some previs later
Best to you!!

I really liked your Vid. The mood is great! :applause:
Man, this competition becomes more and more interesting every day!

01-16-2009, 03:22 PM
Thank you Christian. Its still like half of the shot ready
I'm stillI rendering, most of the shots at 40-50fps to have better control over movie's timing later but it takes a lot more both time and patience
best to you!!

01-16-2009, 03:31 PM
same as PI^^ awesome work here. I love the dark style with the burning highlights.

40-50 fps? will you have some kind of slow motion in the final?
may I ask how much rendertime takes a average of your frames, with all passes, atm?

this will become a great short ;)

01-16-2009, 03:56 PM
Thanks Martin!
I will have some slow motion in the final that's true also but overall I might need some shots to change their dynamics later during editing (or just some time range of those shots) so it's a better way than pulldown etc. I render shots in basic layers of background and actors : beauty, lighting, shadows, zdepth sometimes hdr and reflection It takes from 20 sec up to 15 min per frame depending on layer or complexity
2:04hr to render another shot... ;)

01-21-2009, 05:04 PM
This is looking really good so far!

01-22-2009, 08:37 PM
Thanks Lorne:beer:
I'm working (rendering) 24/7 It's getting tight

Rendering is done! Now I'm working on compositing and postwork. Earlier I shot some FX footage (smoke).
This challenge should be a year long so I could do everything the way I imagined it but It wan't so I'll just put together what I got to this point.
I guess I can't use music from Lord of the Rings :) so I'll make my own
I started composing and by the way took some sound samples from basements, baths etc
...must get back to work now

Best to you peoples in this final hours!

This is my final submission! And I just can't believe how fast the last 3 months passed. Anyway thank you for your help and encouragement. I'm very happy I could participate in this grandest challenge of them all..
My movie is titled The maze. It's a story based on the Minotaur legend. There was only one brave enought to face the ultimate enemy deep inside a deadly maze...

Hmm maybe one or two.. .
Biggest challenges was to put a life into theseus and make him look and heavy, hampered and strong. I had some great fun shoting fx footages
And thank you for this oportunity
The final movie is a composition of over 24000 frames

It was my pleasure!

Higher quality video!

02-05-2009, 10:30 AM
hey buddy, congrats on finishing another challenge project! You started very fast and ended up with massive project. It feels like very art movie, where you have to watch and feel a very long shots, very deep... tell you, I was working with the theme of mazes and labyrints for my diploma projects, and the spirit of them is just about the same as in your movie. Maybe you could try to speed up some sequences in postproduction (time remapping or something) so your actions will work as refresher :) Good luck!

02-05-2009, 02:34 PM
Hi there Juraj!
Thanks for your comment
In fact story ant it's emotional impact was the main goal for me on this project.
Story was defined by moments when Theseus enters the maze, his lamp fades, thread ends and Minotaur appears. The main problem was to fill action between this moments.Result is as you can see. The size of this project slightly surpassed my expectations and there was a true race to have it finished on time (Some memorable nights:)
I've just tried to remap some timing (mainly in the clash sequence where I dreamed to remake 2 or 3 shots but didn't have time) and the result is better...unfortunetaly we only had 3 months ! not an hour more...
And that's a lesson for another project

Wish you all the best!
