Hello everyone!

I was thinking of making a drawing based on the journeys of Sindbad the seaman.
On his second and fifth journeys, Sindbad encountered giant birds called rocs. On the second journey, a roc carried him across the Valley of Diamonds. On the fifth journey, Sindbad's crewmembers ate a roc's egg. This anghered the parent birds, and they attacked the boat and it's crew.
I think both of these journeys are great inspiration. I'll wait with going into a specific scene untill I know which I like best, and focus on the common things instead: the birds, and Sindbad.
Enough chatting, let's draw some mechanical birds!

This is the concept for the bird's metal plating, which will cover the machinery.
The metal plates will not cover the whole body, a little like the transformers from the movie. That will hopefully avoid making the roc look too solid to fly.
I'm not too sure yet about the glowing parts, altough they do give a little bit of a magical touch - this is a fairytale after all.

This is the momkent where Sindbad runs up to the bird, and grabs it's talons as it's flying away.
In the actual story, Sindbad grabbed it's talon at night, when the bird was asleep. That sounded like a less interesting picture to me.
It's not steampunk at all at this point -but don't worry, that'll be the next step.

After a little experimentation, I decided that this scheme was a lot nicer.
I also changed the position of the bird to make it face away from the viewer -it'll make it easier to understand it's flying away. Also, no sane person would walk up right in front of a giant mechanical bird if you can sneak up from behind. Right?

This is the story of the second voyage of Sindbad the Sailor.
Sindbad is stranded on an island, his crew has forgotten to take him with them.
So Sindbad explores the island, when he sees an egg of extraordinary size -and metal clockwork! And when he realizes this must be the egg of the birds called Roc, a shadow is cast over him. It is the mechanical bird itself!
But Sindbad is not afraid. This is his opportunity to escape this island.
Sindbad waits until the bird needs to recharge, and then binds himself to the bird with his turban.
The next day, the bird flies off -not knowing it has a passenger. After a long flight, it lands. Sindbad jumps off, and hides from the bird.
He looks around -oh no! He has landed in a desert!
Sindbad runs back, but the bird has already taken off...

I painted it in Photodhop CS2, with a tablet. It was a great, and fun challenge, I hope to be back for the next one!
