I have no experience with this subject, but looking at artwork done by other people, seems amazing, so I'm looking foreward to dig into this.

OLD MAN STORY
The main character is old, really old. He is so old, that he is nearly dead, extremely bended foreward and bad walking.
His lifelong dream is to be able to fly freely like the birds do.
He has build a huge maching, 2-3 times bigger than himself, which can carry him in the air, at least in theory.
It has huge pipes and is build by all sorts of different stuff he has found.
He takes it on with a big struggle, the machine is really heavy.
After a few tries it takes off, and within few seconds he is in fact flying with the birds.
He gets more and more excited about it and pushes the machine beyonds its capablities.
It breaks apart in the air and he crashes down to the ground.
We see a flash back of him, perhaps narrated, writing a goodbye letter to his children, saying that they shouldn't worry, his biggest dream has come through, and he died a very happy man.
He takes a last look at the picture of his dead wife, before closing the envelope with the letter, putting it on the table.
Back in the present, we see a big carriage standing, top loadede with crap (pardon my french).
As he thinks he will die of the crash he instead lands in the big pile, surviving.
At first he lands on his back, with the maching in the dirt, but after a few seconds it tips over, pushing him into it, and settles on top.
I'm not sure about the whole steampunk thing. I've never involved myself into this theme, so if the story or the design lacks of steampunk-theme, please say so and I'll try to correct it.
Your story definitely has steam-punk elements to it.
Looking forward to seeing some more!

first glimpse of the main character. nothing much yet, just wanted to get going. I hope it'll be done by the end of the week, together with his machine. And then rigged by the end of next week, so I can start animating. I'm sure that will be the big time consumer.

I hope to have modelled both the man and the machine, and rigged both, for the end of the next week (week 48), and to start animation from week 49, but if it will happend before that, then it's fine by me. A lot of work need to be done.

Looking good :) I think you could push the perspective more in some of the shots in your story, to make some more tension. Most of the shots seem very neutral.
Maybe you could have a camera more from below at the Heat-o-meter. Or something :)

I spend a while working on the collar og his shirt. Haven't been modeling for some time now, so I had a bit of trouble making a nice flow around that area, but I eventually worked it out pretty well, I guess.
Nothing much to say. Just have to work some more on it in general, but the basic shape is coming along fine.
Yeah, true. I could probably push the angles a bit more.
I'll leave that to when I actually have to set the cameras up in 3d space. For now, I believe it will work as it is.

Yet another update.
Moving along with the basic of the character. I only need the head now, and then add a all of those details, that makes it a lot more interesting to look at.
Although I think most of it will come in the texturing.
I'll try and keep it all very simpel, though.
It's a nice touching story you have got here :) Simple and clean designs too.
Is that the low poly character that you are going to rig? I am working as a rigger and character TD, and if I would to rig a cartoony character like that, I would ask my modeler to add some loops in strategic places, where the character is to bend the most. One loop between knee and ankle, and hip and knee is too little - skinned geometry will collapse on bend, and specially on twist. The same goes for arms. It would also be good to add a couple of loops across the body and along sides of the body for the same reason. And at least one more loop across the neck...
Usually, I would ask my modeler to give me 5 loops across the joint. Say for a knee there would be a middle loop and 2 loops in the both directions from it, for getting a nice falloff in skinning.
I can see you have a nice little bend in knees, it would be nice to have the same for elbows - just to define where the elbow is, and to have an angle for IK handle to know in which direction to bend.
Just some thoughts :)
Shape is very nicely captured.

You've got some very good pointers there.
My idea is to give it a smooth division of 1 after modeling, which I am gonna unwrap and rig/skin/animate upon.
For rendering I'll give it yet another smooth division, landing on a total og 2 divs.
I'll hopefully work some more on it tonight, and I'll show the skinning wire then, but you can get a general idea in the first character WIP I postet :)

Still modeling on the character. It should be done tomorrow or the next day at least.
To the right you can see the density that I'll be skinning/unwrapping/animating in.
The actual mesh I'm working with now is a lot less dense, but it is a bit too low poly, so the shape changes a lot from no smooth to smooth with 1 div.
For rendering it'll get yet another division.

A little feedback...
If you look closely you can see that the texture is mirrored, maybe that should be changed. Also, when you make texture, it would be nice with some more details, i bit like this:
U can see the fabric. I think it would give a nice toucht to your character.

Okay, I think I'll leave him as he is for now. He'll work the way he is, I think.

Nothing much to say. I'm trying to work as close to the concept as possible.
Getting the toony style transferred into 3d, but still make it look like it could fly (even though it couldn't in any way, what so ever).
Like a bumblebee, right? ;)

looks promising.. as you already mentioned, a little more time spend on the textures wouldn't hurt.. especially on the skin as it seems to be very likely to burn out when lighting.
The goggles might need some colorwork too or something, cause it's a little hard to seperate them from the eyes.

Need to place bolts in all the corners of the plates, and then unwrap/basic textureing, and I'm ready to rig it and the guy.

Hi there Christoffer,
Progressing nicely :) It is a neat style you have for your project, almost like a bit of Tim Burton in it! What are your plans on scenery and envirounment? Would be sweet if they had the same odd and unbalanced shapes like the man and his machine.
Perhaps the machine needs a little diversity in it, like one of the plates being rusty, or in a different hue?
Looking forward to see the completion of the machine - a little brass and the placing of the bolts, and it is ready to fly high! ;)

I have unwrapped each plate individually, so they will have difference in look.

Finally got the model done.
Took a while, placing all the bolts manually, but now that they are there, I think they give it a nice touch.
I got the entire thing unwrapped as well, and as you can see i started a bit on the rigging.
Next week will bee rigging both the machine and the character, as well as doing some basic texturing of the machine.
Hopefully I can start animate in the end of next week.

Almost done with rigging the main character, so thought I'd try and do some other stuff.
I started a bit on scene 9, which is a rather easy scene (at least animation wise). It's the Point of view scene, where he looks down at the ground, while flying high above the clouds.
Just started playing with the clouds and some treetops.
Rendered with software render, as it gave the far quickest results, compared to mental ray, but it should be kept in mind, that shading/lighting/rendering is DEF. not where I shine, so it's gonna take a lot of work to make it look good, and still keeping acceptable rendertimes, as I usualle just set up a spot light, throw in some HDRI, turn on GI and FG and hit render ;)
I think it works okay so far, but obviously needs a LOT of work, hehe...

Okay, I promise you, this is the last borring T-pose screen I'll show you ;)
I finished up the rigging on the main character, which means all I have left is binding him and the machine, then I'm ready for animation.
I'll iron out any kinks there might be (there WILL be some) on the rig and binding, as I move on animating the first sequence, as I thinks it's easyest to do so when the rig is in action.
Next update should involve motion to SOME degree at least ;)

I've worked all day on finishing the rigs and a now putting final touches on them and merging the two into one big rig.
I desided to take a little break and surf the internet for some sound effects.
As far as I can tell, we are allowed to use sound FX from the internet right? As long as they are free to use for personal projects. I don't suspect this to be "professional" work in that sense, or am I wrong?
Anyways, I spend about 1 hour on finding these sounds and editing it into my storyboard. It's still VERY early, and maybe it's too soon to even show you guys but hell... it's WIP right? :)

I think you should be aware of the weight of the machine.
It will almost be impossible to stand still with such a big machine.

I plan to have this whole sequence animated before sunday, as I leave for my parents for christmas and can't work on this project untill after newyears.
Then I hope to animate the last part within a week plus some day after newyears, as I'll have those days dedicated to this project.
The main issue I have, is the transition between shot 1 and 2. The motion of the machine isn't really carried through the two shots, so it looks a bit strange.
Then of couse shot 3 which has barely been touched.
The rest I think works pretty well, but it probably needs a bit of touch here and there.

Look really good, but his legs need to tremble more, more short steps, moving his centre of gravity to counter the weight shifts of the engine.
hehe nice man i can`t wait to see the whole animation. Maybe add some more emotion to his face.

I think it looks good.
When the closeup of his head and upper body comes, and he pulls the thingy. It think it could be cool if he was strugling some more too optain the balance.
He looks a bit stiff.

I try to do a bit of research in lighting and stuff, while I can't work on the project. I gotta say I miss it though :(

Okay, finally back on this project.
I spendt the day today working on the environment.
Both lighting, material and modeling.
Still need some work, but it's a start.
The smoke is not working too great, and i messed up with my keylight, so it's not as dominant as it'll get in later versions.
Then I'll need some more work on the machine, considering textures and materials.
I won't spend time on rendering out animation before I start at school the 12th, becouse then it can just render while I'm not home.
So the plan atm. is to finish all animation before the 12th, and then I have about two weeks for lighting (almost done), materials (needs a bit of work) and rendering/comp which should go pretty smooth, at least the comp.

The environment is ok but I find hte tree too much realistic as the rest of your environment isn't so. Also the depth of field a bit too strong.

Yes, the tree is way more realistic than the rest (the house as well), as they are images.
I tried the opposite, just drawing in some fast trees but it didn't work either, so I will have to find some golden middleway between very rough toony and realistic.

Here is a update, containing a fairly big amount of new work.
I only need two shots left, and then some improvement through out the film (binding is not working properly and it could be a bit more fluid and vivid).
I have made a couple of notes myself.
Obviously a LOT of environment modeling left to do!

Very nice so far.
I like it a lot!
When he tries to start the machine and it slow getting startet, maybe the propel should be turning around. I think it would be cooler if it tried to turn around, but was not quit there jet.
Also, when he pushes the machine, because he likes flying, he dosnt look that happy. I think he should smile a lot more. He's biggest dream is coming true :)
wasnt it suppose to be a wagon in the end? I think it fits the story better. Or maybe if the thing was made out of wood or something.
It could be nice if the credits was the flying shit landing on the ground forming the names :D Or maybe Im the only one who likes that idea.

Yeah, the storyboard said a wagon, but I like this a bit better, but maybe I can model it out to be a big wood container thingy instead.
Haha, yeah that ending title sounds pretty cool, but it also sounds like waaaaay too much work for an ending title, considering there is only ONE MONTH left... shhiiiiit...
Plus I kinda like the way the ending title works now :)

Cool. Nice that you keep up the work!
When the exhaust pipes falls off and hits the ground I think there should be less time between them hitting the ground. A bit too slow right now.
And a look-test.. nice. As mentioned your DOF makes it look like a minerature. Soften up his shadow on the fence, and maybe add a subtle green bounce light from the grass, when he is that close to the ground.

I agree with Doerge's and Deje3D comments regarding animation.
If I may add my own penny... You may want to work a bit more with the timing of the action scenes, they look a bit too long right now. May be make shots shorter and animations in every shot more compact and accentuated. Better shorter but better, you may end with a film twice as shot, but 10 times more interesting to watch.

Yeah, speed has always been my problem. It's very difficult to see for myself, whether or not they should sped up with 20 or 30 % or if they are fine.
I think that I'll just try and speed up my playplasts in Premiere, and see how that looks. Then I can go in and correct it in maya afterwards :)
But thank you for the heads-up.
I'll hopefully submit a new update tonight at some point.

I cut off about 17 seconds, based on different comments from users here on CGtalk.
I think it became a lot better, and if no one has anything critical I think I'll call it final animation for now.
I need some time for shading/lighting/rendering too.
I'm also thinking of adding a bit of scream into some of the shots, and maybe find e new soundstrack, not that fond of it anymore, but maybe it's because I've heard it too many times already.
Let me know what you think about it all :)
And YES I just spotted the spelling mistake in the title :S

Great animation!! Really funny character!
One thing that could be good for the editing is to accelerate the speed when the old man starts flying out and you could also speed up and give some impact when he falls.

Yeah, accelerating out of the shot is a nice idea.
I also see now, that he moves to slow foreward in the shot where he loses his pipes, so I'll correct that as well.
I worked on the texturing/shading of the machine and man today.

It's SO awesome that you keep moving forward and are getting closer to finishing the project.
I showed the video to my girlfriend, and she commented, that she didnt really think that i looked like he was pushing the mashine harder, to fly faster. If you got spare time, maybe you could consider a other way to show it.
It looks so much better in the short version!
I think it's a wize decision to go on to lighting and shading, but if you will have time for improvement it would be nice to try working with comments of Deje3D and Thiago-Pires. You may also want to add a reaction shot (may be a close up of the surprised face) just before he starts to fall down :)

Hey, mate. I'm glad you showed it to your girlfriend. It's always great to have a view from someone who doesn't see the technical aspect of it (as I assume she doesn't).
I'll try and see if I can spice up the shot a bit, making it look more as if he pushes it. I don't think I'll add a whole new shot though. Ain't got time to do it, now that school starts again, and portfolio deadline creeping up from behind as you know ;)
Good idea about the reaction shot. I can probably squeeze that in, without too much of a hassle.
I'm glad you liked the new update. I think it works a lot better also. I think I'll give the animation just another touch, as I've now gathered a couple of comment, but that'll be it. I still have a long way to go and not a whole lot of time.

I think that particular scene needs some boost, maybe something like a backfire reaction on the camera when icarus leaves the frame...

I did a little bit of change in the animation in some of the scenes. Added a closeup/reaction shot as well.

I still need to change the background and the clouds though. They are not working what so ever.
I have started rendering, and scenes will tick in a slow but steady rate.

Yes, you are absolutely right. That scene could use a boost for sure.

Personally i think it might be a bit to bright. Overall. But that that might just be my tasty :)
I must say, that when you enterede the challenge, i had a idea that you could make a cool short, it might have some errors and so. After seeing the lastest animation the quality is much higher quality that i expectet.

Well, there are a LOT of little mistakes and errors here and there. It's just a matter of trying to hide them as good as possible.
I'm sorta re-rendering most of the film, because I added some stuff, and thightended up the animation here and there.
It shouldn't be a problem considering deadlines, though. As long as it renderes while I'm at school, it's pretty much "free rendertime".
I need two shots more, then I'm done with all the Air stuff (from he leaves frame in the beginning, and all the way to the end). I should have those done by the weekend.
I've lit and modeled most of the ground scene as well, but need to touch the animation a bit there still.
So High Five to you too, and good luck with your challenge :) You HAVE to finish up ;)

It's funny about that, because I always want to make a dark and gloomy short, but all the stories I get in my head are light and "funny", hehe.

I think the closeup before he falls is a bit too short, but besides that, I'm pretty happy about the result.

nice render. i think that the splines are a bit too smooth at the moment. maybe try and break them up, and make a mess of you animation. Especially so his head isnt floating too much.
The first shots are amazing. You got really good weight going on, you catch the heavyness of the jet(propella)pack very well.

I'm really happy you get a sense of wheight and mass in the beginning of the film.
It was a big concern that it would show through :)
Yeah, it can be a bit floaty, especially the head.
I'm almost finish with the rendering of the everything but one shot, but rendertimes are pretty low, so good time to re-render if things still looks wrong.
I touched the animation a bit also, but that was before your post.
I should have the update ready tomorrow night.

Getting close to deadline and close to final film as well.
Only need one shot and some more work on the sound.
I have time to de re-renders though, if there are anything completely wrong, although I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Okay, the very last renders are coming in a steady rate now.
I've changed a lot in the look of the film, some animation and little bits and pieces.
Here is a temporary image, and tomorrow I hope to upload the final film, at least the visual part. The sound design, 30 sec. cut and model renders will come later this week.
The whole project should be done saturday/sunday.
I don't wonna work right up till' deadline.
I guess I don't have the balls for such a stunt ;)

I still need that, a decent sound design and a 30 sec. cut so I still got a lot of work in front of me.

Thanks. The final renders for the model show-off came in today while I was at school. They looks like they should (I'm not gonna judge wheather that's good or bad), so that's cool.
I also did the 30 sec. edit, and my god that was difficult. Next time I'll try to create a film within the 30 sec. limit and go for more quality instead. But it's actually very difficult to tell a story in 30 seconds I realised. So respect to you and your teammates for pulling that off!
The sound is killing me though. But it should be okay. I'm still shooting for delivery on saturday/sunday depending on my hangovers :D

Yeah, well I am fairly proud, but when you work so intense on a project, you tend to get a very subjective opinion about it, so I mainly see the stuff that I should/would change if I had time.
