I'm going to do my very darndest to finish this one! I can feel it....

ok, time to start having fun with ideas!

(( STEAMPUNK THEMES))

MYTHS & LEGENDS

My favourite myths and legends......done in steampunk style!

I'm thinking of doing an irish legend- in steampunk... so here's a list:

1) The swans of Lir: Children are banished from their kingdom and turned into swans.
2) The giant Fionn MacCumhail fights with his scottish counterpart Benandonner and forms the Giant's Causeway in the process.
3) The Salmon of Knowledge: Cuchulainn burns his finger on the salmon of knowledge, gaining the gift of knowledge.
4) Queen Medb is jealous of her husband's bull, so she determines to outdo him by getting the best bull in Ireland. To this end, she goes to war against Daire a chieftain of Ulster.

-------------------------

or...the greek legends done steampunk style!

The hundred-eyed Argus being killed and turned into a peacock...or the war between Hector and Achilles...

-----------------------
More modern-day type stuff----

A steampunk circus or steampunk fairground!

More ideas:

* Steampunk Alice in Wonderland (I like this one)

Ok, I have an Alice-in-wonderland steampunk type sketch done, but I'm in college & need to wait till my lectures are done before I can scan it in!

It's of an Alice in a leather coat holding a roundbottomed beaker (DRINK ME) and astride a giant mechanical caterpillar (usually the caterpillar is smoking his hookah, but here he's a steamcaterpillar)...with the march hare after her...hehehe...

Steampillar concept: The caterpillar is usually smoking; here he's steaming and acting as Alice's transport to get away from the Cheshire cat winged machine and the zeppelins of the Queens. Sadly though, I have no scanner, so this is a photo-it looks much better in person, I promise. :D

hi theresa
nice to see you participate. alice in steampunk land hmm? sounds great, ah i love the sheshire cat or however that's actually written... or pronounced :-) and i'm looking forward to see how your version'll develop. i guess everything's gonna be quiet mechanical, but maybe i was thinking, the cheshire cat could be a bit different, in a way more powerful and misterious. I always thought of it like so. well enought babbling, good luck to you!

Coco: You have me exactly. :) I wanted a bit of a cross between steampunk and legend- it's not one or the other...

Michael: I should have been paying more attention to my lectures this morning, I have very little pharmacognosy learned...oops...oh well...

Bearfoot: Yeah, I see what you're saying there- but the theme is 'Steampunk WITH myth/legend', the way I see it you can have a bit of both if you want to- at the expense of the steam, maybe? But I have quite a few elements in there...machines, gears, levers, goggles, tin plates, screws, rawls, zeppelins...how many more do you need?!

Here is the page I have for my entry:

Would someone mind posting some instructions in the above thread so I can find out how to get a thumbnail in the list?

Spin: She is! She's a steampunk pinup :)

Grin: I'd keep an eye on this space then if I were you- the next one will be a steampunk Queen Maedbh with her mechanical bull of Cooley (the Táin bó Culaigne). Either that or an illustration of the most fearsome of Irish legends: the Hounds of the Morrígan!

Ben: You need to go to Submit Entry - 'Steampunk Myths and Legends' CGChallenge (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/submit_entry.php) to submit your works instead of hosting them yourself.

wow, new concept looks very promising, I had a similar idea but with a giant craken, but had the same comp in mind with only a slightly different mood... I still can't decide what to do yet though, or if, 'cause atm I got no tablet! and not much extra time at the office...

erilaz
11-12-2008, 08:06 PM
Love the new concept! I felt the Alice-like theme was straying a liiiiittle too far from the idea of ancient myths and legends. :)

paperclip
11-12-2008, 08:53 PM
Velk: Ray gun? In victorian times? o_O Maybe a harpoon though?

Coco: No idea is unique anymore. :D Just do your thing! It's hard getting time for it though, I know, I do my thumbnails in between lecture slides.....

Erilaz: Ancient myths and legends? Ancient? Really? I didn't know they 'had' to be ancient, just myths/legends. I thought Alice 'counted' as a myth, since she is clearly unreal and in quite a wonderful wonderland..but I'm probably not going to follow that concept anyhow.

Coming up next: The Hounds of the Morrigan!

The Morrigan is a goddess of battle, strife, and fertility. Her name translates as either "Great Queen" or "Phantom Queen," and both epithets are entirely appropriate for her. The Morrigan appears as both a single goddess and a trio of goddesses. The other deities who form the trio are Badb ("Crow"), and either Macha (also connotes "Crow") or Nemain ("Frenzy"). The Morrigan frequently appears in the ornithological guise of a hooded crow. She is one of the Tuatha Dé Danann ("Tribe of the goddess Danu") and she helped defeat the Firbolg at the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh and the Fomorians at the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh.

She appeared to the hero Cuchulainn and offered her love to him. When he failed to recognize her and rejected her, she told him that she would hinder him when he was in battle. When Cu Chulainn was eventually killed, she settled on his shoulder in the form of a crow. Cu's misfortune was that he never recognized the feminine power of sovereignty that she offered to him. She appeared to him on at least four occasions and each time he failed to recognize her.

When she appeared to him and declared her love for him.
After he had wounded her, she appeared to him as an old hag and he offered his blessings to her, which caused her to be healed.
On his way to his final battle, he saw the Washer at the Ford, who declared that she was washing the clothes and arms of Cu Chulainn, who would soon be dead.
When he was forced by three hags (the Morrigan in her triple aspect) to break a taboo of eating dogflesh.
She has hounds which she sends to kill anybody displeasing her. I've always thought of the hounds as being like a cross between greyhounds and Irish wolfhounds.

So.......something along these lines!

The Morrigan in the form of a crow along with the others...the giant Cuchulainn as a steampunk robot...
I think if I did this one, I'd change his left leg, it's a bit too distracting...I'd also remove the man, he's steampunky but a bit too distracting as well??

'This thing has been around longer than we thought. And it doesn't die.'

...I had a dream about this last night so when I woke up, I painted this. Explorers discovering a cave find out that their steampunk monster is not a new thing...

Changes, obviously, would be made. I'm not a huge fan of the composition, for example. Hmm.

Thanks Laurent... I figured you'd like it (it's based on Lescaux, after all). I laughed in my dreams when this came up, so I had to paint it. :D

A couple more concepts I came up with this morning while walking to college:

1) The invasion of Troy... sort of like with a wooden horse, but not a horse...but it starts raining and it puts out the fires, so they need to relight it. :D

2) Similar theme- dracula/frankenstein type thing...but it breaks down and needs to be fixed on its way to terrorizing the village.

Ali: Where's YOUR entry!? Are you holding out on us?? I have to go find it now...

Brittany: Nothing makes you more creative than spending your day doing the least creative thing possible! During the day, I CAN'T make any mistakes. ( One mistake means you get zero in the entire exercise), so careful routine and meticulous detail makes one very hungry for a creative outlet, hehehe. Each one only takes about an hour, so I do them while having a very slow dinner...there's always time SOMEWHERE. I think up most of my ideas while sleeping or walking into college or waiting for the lab instruments to calibrate...

Sideache: Thanks! :D I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Martin: I have a steampump here to help me. And who says there's going to be a tomorrow? :surprised I see I'm going to have to 'gently motivate' you in your efforts...

This is the Angel of the Gold Rush: During the Californian Gold Rush, William O'Brien was one of the last people to get over there and set up his plot. Unfortunately though, he set up a site completely devoid of gold. He worked for months without as much as a bean to show for it. On the very last day, working under the burning sun, he said a prayer to his Lord. When he opened his eyes again, before him stood the Angel of the Gold Rush, holding up the largest gold nugget he'd ever seen.

(I'd give him some steampunkish gold panner thingy, but maybe the whole thing just isn't steampunkish enough)

Wow clippy! Little Mermaid. I'm still trying to come up with one myth/legend I want to use let alone the 10 or so you've sketched out, great start. Maybe video concepts are just harder to come up with, yeah I'll go with that.

Laurent:: A couple more days of concepts, then I'll pick one out, probably tomorrow or Wed. Then I'll start messing around with the composition...this is all a learning experience for me, you know. :D ...Me, a monster? Ahem...pot, kettle...black...

Coco: Thanks. :D

Slav: I really appreciate your encouraging words. Thanks.

and why not a magic blend of all your concepts ! that will be more easy than the impossible choice :deal:

paperclip
11-17-2008, 06:49 PM
That sounds intriguing. Let's see...my concepts are/were.. the tain bo culaigne, the gold rush, little mermaid, troy, red riding hood, cinderella, humpty dumpty, alice in wonderland and the cave one. Oh and Cuchulainn and the morrigan trifecta!

So....to combine them...we could have the little mermaid being washed up onto a beach and being taken away by the wolf of red riding hood to give to the grandma, but Cuchulainn comes across the wolf and kills it to feed the Morrigan crows to distract them from himself, managing to escape, but getting lost in the forests and coming across the Cheshire cat and Alice who is also trying to find HER way out of the forest, so the two of them find Cinderella's coach and steal it in order to get to California so they can partake in the gold rush (Cuchulainn is running out of money).

What they don't bank on though is the fact that Humpty Dumpty is sitting on the coach and as it starts, he has another great fall...then the king's horses and the kings' men who have just finished putting him back together again are understandably angry and chase them.

So we have Cuchulainn and Alice on Cinderella's coach being pursued by the crows, all the king's horses and all the king's men. In order to evade the mob, they turn off the beaten track and end up in a cave, where they light a match and discover a cave painting depicting a steam dinosaur which has survived since the stone ages.

They have to stay quiet, otherwise the crows, the cheshire cat and the king's horses and men will hear them and invade the cave. But...then...they hear a steam whistle and the roar of what sounds like a dinosaur....coming from the depths of the cave....

The time had to come- no more messing around with concepts! I have to pick one and start working on it for real. My personal favourites are the Táin, the Gold Rush, the Cave Discovery and Red Riding Hood.

walrus
11-18-2008, 10:37 PM
Of these, I like the Tain best - good start with the composition, and that beast would look great all steampunked out. The cave is a fun idea, but it means that the bulk of your work is cave drawings, not steampunk imagery exactly, and it feels a little like a cheap out.

i like the idea of seeing Alice in Wonderland as a steampunk adventure, but the composition as it is now isn't the strongest, and I'm not usre it counts as a myth, 'though it does fit Mark Snoswell's definition of being in the public domain. But it would be fun to see if done well and thoroughly.

Good luck!

I've decided to go for an Alice, but with a drastically different palette/composition/mood, much more like the Tain (this keyboard has no fada, so you'll have to imagine that little line over the a.) That way I can combine the best of both of my favourite concepts. :)

Thanks again to everyone for commenting. I love this challenge....such a great way to get world class crits that really helps in the development of one's talents, yada yada, I know, but it's so true.

I'm just a little worried that it may not fit the guidelines enough- the legends & myths thing- I mean, it's borderline. As walrus said, it's public domain, but I don't want to end up getting kicked out at the end (not that I stand to win anything).

You know what, since I'm not going to win anything anyway, I'll just do the concept that i think is the coolest and with the composition that i think is the coolest and that is Alice in Wonderland with the composition of the Tain.

So there!

Easter Island was actually the playground for a Victorian scientist/engineer. When he died in 1867, he left the pieces of his experiment scattered around the island. In 2009, the tribesmen from an island 50 miles away happened upon the island. They thought they were seeing a civilization far more advanced than our own...

Does this count as a myth/legend, as Easter Island is a 'modern day myth'?

Monsit:  I think I'm done for now...

OKMER: I rather like the Easter Island one myself. I'm drawn to the cheerful colours like a moth to an open flame, although hopfully this will be less dangerous for me...or maybe not?

Varma: thanks  I love pixar's concepts and it's always been a dream that I may someday in the deep, dark, distant future (through twisty forest vines, etc) work for them in their visual development department or something....that sound be coolness par excellence. I have a long road ahead of me, though...

Kera: nothing is original anymore. :) I got the idea for the last one actually from looking at some Mucha pictures, I really liked the style, then this popped into my head. The Easter island one, though, was totally random. I have no idea where it came from...a bit scary, perhaps? :argh:

Jakyll: thank you...!

Marlon: Don't make me have to sharpen my wacom pen *again*. I agree with you about the 'wrong' version, it seems a bit more epic. The original sketch is quite different, though- I'll post it up and you can see what I mean. It's strange...it didn't seem to translate as well to paint?

nwiz: Thank you.

Micro26: The choice now is between Easter Island and Tain. I liked Alice, but I was thinking about what Walrus said about Tenniel's drawings, he really did pin Alice down and there's no way I can better that, it's too much of a part of Alice. Then, I read this poem and that settled it for me:

I Think Continually Of Those Who Were Truly Great
Stephen Spender

I think continually of those who were truly great.
Who, from the womb, remembered the soul's history
Through corridors of light where the hours are suns
Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition
Was that their lips, still touched with fire,
Should tell of the Spirit clothed from head to foot in song.
(more here (http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/%7Erichie/poetry/html/poem78.html))

Tobias: Afraid not.

Musashidan: I see what you mean about it looking japanese-ish, and you're correct, but it's not because of the myth, rather because I've been looking at too much Art Nouveau... nice to see more irish people around here! Cad é mar atá an saol agat?

Subedei: Another one of our people! Cén chaoi a bhfuil tú?

Cyberone: Just cuz it's yellow doesn't mean it's Alice! :D

Disco stu (the one and only) No, afraid not...although if you look closely, you'll find it's not an apple on the plate, but a HEAD...yes, a mecha head.

It's Salome.

(wikipedia:

Salome or Salomé (Greek Σαλωμη) the Daughter of Herodias (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herodias) (c AD 14 - between 62 and 71), is known from the New Testament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament) (Mark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Mark) 6:21-29 and Matt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Matthew) 14:6-11, where, however, her name is not given (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_names_for_the_Biblical_nameless#Herodias.27_daughter)) in connection with the death of John the Baptist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_John_the_Baptist). Another source from Antiquity, Flavius Josephus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flavius_Josephus)' Jewish Antiquities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Antiquities), gives her name and some detail about her family relations.

Christian traditions depict her as an icon of dangerous female seductiveness, for instance depicting as erotic her dance mentioned in the New Testament (in some later transformations further iconised to the dance of the seven veils (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_of_the_seven_veils)), or concentrate on her lighthearted and cold foolishness that, according to the gospels, led to John the Baptist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Baptist)'s death. A new ramification was added by Oscar Wilde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Wilde), who in his play Salome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salome_%28play%29) let her devolve into a necrophiliac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necrophiliac), killed the same day as the man whose death she had requested. This last interpretation, made even more memorable by Richard Strauss's opera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salome_%28opera%29) based on Wilde, is not consistent with Josephus' account; according to the Romanized Jewish historian, she lived long enough to marry twice and raise several children.

E and G feel the most dynamic and confrontational to me. Dunno if that's appropriate to the myth or not, but i like them.... G more because it has a clearer silhouette, although it would read even more clearly if you lowered he right arm so there was a bit more white space between the arm and spear(?).

Slav: I'm gonna use it too. :D It can be a sort of steampunk rite thing...like the godrays of 'Journey Begins', who else remembers that!? Everyone tried to put a godray in there somewhere, lol.

The judges probably got a bit suspicious after the nth godray, lol.

Micro: Wish I could do ALL of them-- maybe I'll do them all on the side! As in, not for my main challenge, but I like most of them in some way or other...so...hmm...keep an eye on the gallery/my portfolio, heh. 3 months is a long time, after all.

Glenn: Smiles on faces, that's what we're all here for...I will definitely have fun, it's always a given when there's a wacom nearby, for me at least...

Laurent:: ouioui, i see what you mean, the arm is too short at the elbow, hopefully I would have spotted that by the 3 month mark though. :D I think I have a couple more concepts for her up my sleeve, maybe tonight?

walrus: :D Carousels are fun anyway, my earliest memory is getting lost near a carousel and being found by a hippy woman who helped me find her mother, then she gave me one of her hippy necklaces... that surprised me so much I stopped crying for my mother. (I think I was about 3 or 4?) I still have that necklace, it's a hide and clay-bead one...maybe I'll include it in my picture somewhere, I could see ancient queens wearing hide and clay bead necklaces...

------------

Side note: Today I went to the library in my college and got out the Táin bó Culaigne, to see what I could see. Here's a summary:

''The Cattle-Raid of Cooley'' exists in several versions, the oldest of which goes back probably to the 8thC. The tale opens with the famous 'pillow-talk'- a racy dialogue between Queen Medbh of Connacht (which is where I am from!) and her hen-pecked husband, Ailill. The queen, on finding that her possessions equal those of her husband, except for one bull, the white0horned of Connacht, determines to make up the defiency by gaining possession of the most famous bull in Ireland, the Donn of Cooley, which i sthe property of Daire, a chieftain of Ulster. When Medbh learns that she cannot obtain the Donn as a loan, she determines to take the animal by force and gathers an army to invade Ulster. Owing to the temporary debility of all the adult warriors of Ulster, the seventeen year old Cuchulainn undertakes to oppose Medbh's host single-handed. When medb hears of Cuchulainn, sheinquires about him from the Ulster exils in her army and learns of his boyish exploits,

As the result of an agreement between Medb and Cuchulainn, the champion meets at a ford on the border of the two provinces a single connacht warrior each day over a period extending from Samhain (that is, Hallowe'en) until the beginning of spring. The men of Connacht finally succeed in invading Ulster and carrying off the Donn of Cooley, but they are later defeated by the ulstermen, now restored to their normal strength, The Donn of Cooley, after slaying the White horned of Connacht, returns to his native district and utters mad bellowings of triumph until his heart bursts and he dies. The combat between Cuchulainn and his friend Ferdiad is one of the most famous passages in early irish literature.

Here's how they describe Cuchulainn:

'In the front of this chariot is a man with fair, curly, long hair. There is around him a cloak, blue, parthian purple, A spear with red and keen-cutting blades, flaming-red in his hand. The semblance of three heads of hair he has, namely, brown hair next to the skin of his head, blood-red in the middle, a crown of gold is the third head of hair. Beautiful is the arrangement of that hair so that it makes three coils down behind over his shoulders. Even as a thread of gold it seems....yellow of bees...shining of each single hair of his head (it goes on in this vein for some time) ...seven toes he has on each of his feet and seven fingers on each of his hands and the brilliance of a very great fire is around his eye,.'

Theresa- it's nice to see you getting around to the more final layout. i have two main suggestions: First, the bull looks really really long for the angle we're seeing him at. If we're seeing that much of a front view like his head it at than he's be incredibly long, like a Dachshund/Bull crossbreed! I'd suggest making him shorter. Secondly, I love how he closes off the space on the left, but by comparison, it might be nice to frame the space on the left too. Here's what I mean:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l260/mdashow/paperclip_paintover01.jpg

I've decided to do both of these images! I like them both for different reasons, so I'm just going to go ahead with both, alternating when I feel like it. Hi Theresa,

I posted a little flabbergasted message to you about what I have seen in this thread so far.

I am not sure which thumbnail to pick.
With that giant bull thing I think you need scale, like mad, like crushingly bewilderingly mad scale. (squeezing the last bit of "overwhelm" out of perspective, too)

A bit like so:
http://cggallery.itsartmag.com/story.php?title=Reaching-Out
(click the thumbnail of the woman)

On another note, I love both the easter islands and the cave concept.
Someone hinted at making up a subterranean body for the easter island heads.
Might very well be worth it.

It's something that has been floating around for centuries, discovered by Pythagoras, in fact. The following excerpts are from Juliette Aristides' Classical Atelier Painting:

...Compositional schemes and their accompanying philosophies have come in different forms over the centuries....yet none has dominated the art worlds of the past so much (and none is as little known today) as the composition schemes based on harmonic proportion. This particular field of design owes its discovery to Pythagoras.

....legend has it that in 500 B.C.E, Pythagoras was walking past a blacksmiths' shop when he noticed that each of the sounds emanating from the hammers hitting the anvil was different. He went into the shop to investigate and discovered that the different sounds were caused by the avarious sizes and weights of the hammer. This led to his discovery that number, e.g the size and weight of the hammer, creates a physical effect in space and time ( in this case a sound)..

Pythagoras wanted to further investigate this mysterious connection between number and physical reality as it is manifested through sound. To do so, he conducted experiments with musical strings of different lengths. Pythagoras found, like hammers, the shorter strings (smaller numbers) produced higher pitched sounds and vice versa. H ethen made a startling discovery. First, eh struck teh string, Then, ehile it was vibrating, he lightly touched his finger along teh string. In most places, this deadened the sound. Yet in a few places a remarkable physical phenomenon occurred- the clear and pleasing ringing of a musical tone. The new tones were created at the one half, two thirds and three quarters divisions of the string when measuring the string from right to left. When measuring the string from left to right, however, these tones are created at the one quarter, one third and one half divisions.

...these pleasing tones are called 'harmonics' or 'musicial root harmonies'. They are the result of the sting taking a new physical form called a sinusoidal wave when it is pressed at the one half, two thirds and three quarter division points. We now refer to these key positions along the string as the 'octave', the 'perfect fifth' and the 'perfect fourth' respectively....

....Curiously, the same ratios that are pleasing to our ears provide pleasing intervals to our eyes. Throughout history, master artists have used the harmonic ratios discovered by pythagoras....

This site explains how to construct the armature. I used a rather simplified form of it-

Theresa - Good to see you're still working on this. It's coming along nicely - I love the colors, especially the bull. The nose looks a bit out of whack on the closeups: Looking at the top half of the head, it's clear it's turned towards the main characters, so that we see more of the screen-right (bull's left) side of this face. But when you look down at the nostrils, both seem to be rendered as if it's a perfectly front view.

I can't tell what you're doing in the upper left with a few twigs up there. There's not enough information to really tell what's going on so it's just confusing. Don't try to split the difference between post #186 and post #187 - there is no #186-and-a-half! :) Either show a tree or don't, but it's not helping you to show 3 twigs.

The fire in the eyes is interesting but how does it look all zoomed out. You may want to think about exaggerating the smoke a lot more. He is a massive and scary adversary after all!

Good luck with the rest!

Well, okay...

The expression of the bull is important: it's the only face we can see in the picture. I like the new nose but with the mouth slightly ajar, he looks a bit stupefied. Adding to this expression are the multiple ridges above the eyes, which remind me of the crinkles your forehead gets when your eyebrows are raised. The combo makes him come off as a little dense, not angry and mean. Think about what forms on the face help express anger: Downturned sidess of mouth, eyebrows down in just the center... try to bring these forms into his face if you want him to look angry.

The bull feels sufficiently fogged bu the atmospheric hazing but the soldiers in front of him don't as much so they read as tiny.

And the person standing in the front left of the picture. Does (s)he actually have a neck? She should...

Oh, and just so i don't sound totally harsh:
Happy Birthday! :D

On walrus's recommendations, I tried making the bull a bit angrier- I really should have done this earlier but I got a bit obsessed with making the rust effect and didn't see the forest for the trees...must stop doing that.

Any better?

I fixed up the clouds somewhat, put more atmospheric 'fog' over the people, fixed the middle ground up a bit, fixed up the head of Cuchulainn and Ferdiad and...made the bull angrier, with a furrowed brow and a downturned mouth. I also worked on the smoke from the nose and the chimneys....

The unicursal hexagram is used to express a high level of self-confidence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-confidence) and belief that one can achieve the highest of goals and become a divine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine) figure.

Hahahaha...I just hope no one thought I used it on purpose! Although I like the idea of becoming a divine figure...ahem...if anyone's looking...;)

I think I may be finished....everything looks 'good' to me at least!

What do you think? Should I push it a bit further or can I call this finished?

Looking really nice, Theresa. Great work so far, and the bull is looking quite mean. Two comments: It still looks like the standing woman has no neck. and secondly, while I love the dark clouds on the left, they feel a bit overworked with the small hard brush. That's not a brush that lends itself well to cloudiness, and the squiggles in the sky are distracting.
Just my small suggestions. Hope you had a good birthday, and glad your liking The Guild so far!

Lol- even though I never played WoW, The Guild was entertaining! I had a great birthday (with the unexpected present of an ipod iTouch from the family!) I'm going to download the brushes app ( www.brushesapp.com) so that I have my own portable photoshop, like a mini cintiq, nearly. :D I know, I'm obsessed.

Here's another render with your ideas taken on board- I used a softer brush for the clouds and made his (he is a male! Cúchulainn- they had long hair back in those days!) neck exist...so here we go...

Thank you, ravensbane! I made a few small changes to the clouds, but I think it's pretty much finished now and I'm about to upload it- but the servers aren't working!

Are you using the Challenge up loader for uploading?

paperclip
01-09-2009, 11:41 AM
Yes, but as it stands I'm getting a MYSQL error- but Leigh has assured me they're aware of this problem and everyone will be able to upload when the servers are back up. So now I just need to relax and think about my next painting....hmmm...how about this: a city street but instead of a road/sidewalks, you step out of the shops into a beautiful garden...with birds of paradise and gazelles...ahhhh...

I had nothing to say these last days... I've followed a little the progress... without words...

sorry, that was like that maybe because I've like a lot the Easter Island story... huhu

Just now... that comes very good... I really like how you enlight the edge of the bull... the comp start to have the little plus wich make the difference...
...I think you must push further this backlight effect around the beast... to have much more contrats between his little steampunks pieces.

This way is so good... that comes to be very epic
it's certainly what the most of us want to see in your realization... bravo Peppie :arteest:

I like all the changes you made in the last iteration. They're all very effective! You could call it done... but even before I read his posy, I was thinking the same thing as Lemog. About the backlighting, not the Easter Island entry. It might be nice to see some really burnished hilights on the few areas that are facing the sun. That's all.

Well.....pour Lemog:

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i58/clippy06/eoverall.jpg

Easter Island: during Victorian times, an insane scientist set up shop on a remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where he intended to build a colossus that would rival that at Rhodes. The Scientist's weakness for cute squirrels led to his downfall, however, when he contracted rabies and died violently. Some hundreds of years later, Easter Island was discovered by explorers....

Oh....
and I burnished the highlights up on the bull somewhat:is this too much burnishing though??

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i58/clippy06/overall-6.jpg

Just out of curiosity- which one do you prefer?!

Lemog
01-09-2009, 03:05 PM
Héhé Thanks a lot for Easter Island... so good for me... that will be my new wallpaper

About the highlights... I'm okay with you... it's a bit too much... not awful of course... but that give a more dark aspect to the rest... between and you will have the good average :arteest:

whoa, that's awesome work Theresa!
I also love the Easter Island piece, lovely colours.

Maybe ad some haze, tone down the contrast on the bull a bit. This will emphasize the distance and the hugeness of the bull, I think.

Laurent....your wallpaper? I hope you enjoy it....after all, I know Easter Island is special for you!

dawinky: Of course- my best and favourite painting is always the next one. :D

Marlon: I tried putting haze around the front of the bull, but it just made it look too foggy- it's the focal point, after all- and it just didn't seem to sit well. I did tone down the contrast a fair bit though, particularly towards its rear end! Glad to see you around- are you still in the challenge?!!?

The CGUploader doesn't seem to be working (servers?) so I'll start working on the others I liked...the gold rush next... :D

Software: Photoshop

Everyone who grows up in Ireland is initiated early in this legend- the epic tale of Cúchulainn the hero (the name means Hound of Culainn) who battles his best friend Ferdiad at a ford- this comes as the ultimate battle after Cuchulainn has spent all the days from Samháin (Halloween) until the first day of Spring in fighting the men from Queen Medbh's army.

Why is he doing this? Medbh is a jealous queen and the story starts with her stocking up all her possessions against her husbands'. When she discovers their possessions are equal, save one bull- a white one- that her husband owns, she vows to get her hands upon the greatest bull in all of Ireland- the great Brown Bull of Cooley, who belongs to the king of Ulster. She brings her army up to Ulster, only to discover that the way is blocked with Cuchulainn. In enquiring about him, she hears about the heroic stories of his youth and childhood.
Can anyone beat him? The one man who grew up with Cúchulainn is his equal-Ferdiad. The Queen then invites Ferdiad to her castle, gets him drunk and, while he is in his bragging state, shames him into agreeing to the battle. Afterwards, his gillie (sort of like a squire?) tries to convince him not to fight his best friend- but his sense of pride is too great.
In this image you see the moment where Cúchulainn and his gillie are scoping out the area around the ford, with the army of Medbh behind. I tried to make the bull as imposing as possible, to show its status in Irish legend and also because giant bulls are fun to draw. :D

I'd like to thank everyone on the forums for their help, particularly those who criticised constructively- you know who you are!- and helped me to push myself a bit further. I learned a lot in this challenge. Thank you to everyone!
