First thought: Cool, no overly complicated book tie-in this time.

Second thought: Steampunk? Geez, that's as tired a meme as there ever was.

Third thought: Well, I suppose if anyone can do this tired theme any justice, the folks here can. Should be interesting. Get your wood and brass shaders fired up!

Ha -- you think you have it bad. In just about any currency other than the Yen the prize pool is enormous due to the weak currency values compared to the strong US dollar.

At today's exchange rate...

US $220,000 = AU $335,877

I really think you should advertise the amount in yen:

Now with over 21 MILLION yen in prizes!

In any event, I predict a record number of entries, even if the prize amount were only 1 million yen...

Yes -- the competition is open to everyone -- no matter where you are.

If you are good enough to win then the sponsors contact you directly to organise sending you your prize.

"In this, the 23nd CGChallenge, entrants are challenged to depict their favorite myth or legend, with a steam-punk aesthetic, via a still image or video."

23nd?

"ish" yes - it's a bit of a deviation, electronics are available for instance - it's locked off more in the 1950's than late 1800's

Makes sense in a star-trek-borg-mentality kinda way. Then you have actually some free time to do stuff.

Yeah i don't understand why they choose this time frame to hold contests either. This season is the busiest season for any art field.

Only thing i can think of is that this is like an advertising campaign somehow. They get to showcase the best of the best work from top artists who use so and so software in this and that contest which is worth some ungodly sum of money...and...WOW! look what they did with "our" software.

Oh well, i just hope one of the moderators reads my first post, about resubmitting work, before this contest ends. :)

I'm curious, but how many people here, participating or not, have seen these competitions and thought of a great idea, but were reluctant to enter simply because yuo felt your work may not be good enough? Have you ever talked yourself out of joining because you felt you wouldn't be good enough to win a prize?

I love the topic and the potential ideas are all so fantastic, but due to little available time and feeling like I'm just way out of touch with modern techniques I don't know if anything I try and make would be any good. I'm psyching myself out before I even join up.

MARTIJN81, Im not the one that can give a total acurate answer, but i think thats a NO, IRONMAN is a modern comic book character, the thread is about myths or legends that MAYBE happen in history, we all know that IRONMAN is a MARVEL character, if you want to go with a hero or something like that, i think that THOR can fit the rules a little bit better.

I hope my answer help you.

see ya.

Everytime I pick up my stylus. But I'm forging on anyway. You should too. The challenges are all about getting past those roadblocks and developing work that you can be proud of. If it means you got it done or you learned a new technique ... then you can count the experience a success. Winning is an added bonus (if you are one of the lucky few) but by no means should be the motivation to enter.

Get to it kromano! I'd like to see what you come up with. :applause:

Precisely. This is the first one i've seriously entered in a while, but it's all about having a project and a deadline for yourself, not as competition with others. The prizes are just sugar.

Oooh as Kirt is well aware I have no shortage of projects and deadlines at the moment. After this semester ends I'll make something. I wanted to do a steampunk minotaur and labrynth a while back for an MGAC, I'll probably come back to that idea unless it's been taken already (or by then).

Visionmaster2: I think way too much about everything. All the time. I should take your advice everytmie I think about anything.

I've picked up from the instructions for the contest, in cathegories:

Integration of live action is encouraged but not essential.

That means to me that the more realist the better...or am i just assuming this stuff?
Does that means that a more 2d stile is discouraged??...if the word exist...sorry for my english.

cheers! :buttrock:

Hi all.

Kromano, by experience the most you think what to do or if you will do it, the most you psych yourself out to not do it, anything. The best thing you can do for this is to jump on the drawing board and begin BLOCKING ideas, the pressure and stress quickly begin to fall bacause you have something clean in front of you and not thousands of little bits of ideas inside your head, those are like demons inside and will drive you mad = not entering the contest.

best wishes to all.

Hi Rodia, I think that real footage stuff is just for backgrounds and maybe background elements like for a matte painting, i dont think you can add fotographic elements to your main subject, cause it can begin to look like a collage.

Te iba a poner la respuesta en castellano tambin, pero me dio paja, saludos.

okay, so I read all the faq's and I'm still jsut wondering, if I have a story that is sort of taking elements from a story in the past (say...Pinocchio) and adding it to my own concoction, would it still count? (It's a story of an old gentleman named the Toymaker who, instead of a boy, makes a mechanical bear.)

'tis all I wanted to know.

Good luck Everyone!!!

I think that as long as there are strong themes to the original legend, its ok. Like the movie AI wasn't pinochio, but had very heavy attachments to that 'legend'.

Has mythology to be universal? Or it can be a local, for example: of Chiloe ............ South of Chili, Latinoamerica ?????
Thank you.

Hi ALFHER, i think you have more posibilities to get a better understanding from the artworks viewer if you go with some well known myths and legends, maybe can be a little bit confusing.

I love Chilos mythology, actually im from chilo and im living here right now, resting a little bit after 5 years of Filmmaking school, but like i said, its better to go with well known material.

Now you have me curious as to what the legends of Chiloe are all about, I didn't find much info in my quick search. I would wager that if you pick something not many people would be familiar with, provide reference material to the legends and inspirations. There are some fantastic legends from many cultures that would work well for this challenge and it would be a shame if they were never made because it was felt that not everybody would understand them.

P.S: Try not to use a black font on this dark gray background, it is difficult to read.

Kromano, check pages end of 9 and 10 and 11 from this PDF (10 and 11 mostly), those are some of the mythological creatures from my island.
