View Full Version : maya 5 bugs list
Morbid Angel 06-14-2003, 02:16 AM Hello, just wanted to post up some bugs i have come across in maya 5. There is lots thats why I want others to see it and perhaps tell me a fix or workaround. :p These similar problems were found on other boxes aswell.
The testing was done on amd 1.8ghz 1 gb ram, geforce 4 ti 4800 128
Maya 5 bugs:
- Maya fails to quit and freezes up on exit.
- Maya software fails to render non-quad subdivsion surfaces - freezes up, and or gives a runtime error.
- Maya freezes up when attaching a complex poly mesh to a lowpoly wrap deformer.
- When performing a bevel option on a non uniform poly surface maya gives unequal scattered edge result. But works fine on build primitives like spheres or plane.
- Maya kicks out to windows when trying to calculate a simple scene containting 50-100 boxes active rigid bodies which are made to collide.
- Maya artisan fails on polysurfaces, at first it drags without update in view port (the brush) then maya halts.
- Computer resets when trying to access the hdd at a higher rate
Mental ray bugs:
- Mental Ray stops render for no reason if you manualy render a frame then switch to a different camera angle. (Message: error cannot start thread 2, cannot start thread 4,9.) This results in maya freez up and.
- Mental ray stops render when new objects are added to a scene during the modeling process (message: cannot start thread 2)
- Mental ray is not working with the batch render. (message: failed to load autoloadplugin.mel)

IKs dont display correctly (when you rotate a parents of the object with IK) unless you disable the IK/FK Swtich Control
Meltal Ray IFFs will not open in After Effects, while Maya Rendered IFFs will
When using Mental Ray, checking Output to Subdirectories doesn't actually create any directories, which results in the passes not being saved. **thanks CIM**
I've found others too (can't remember them all)... but these listed are on every machine. I don't have an issue when I close maya, but I've had errors only when i tried rendering a "subD surface with a non-quad face" when using Mental Ray (it worked with maya's renderer).

see rendering subdiv works on light surfaces....but if you have a character very heavy mesh...then forget it...
anyways i see the list is growing...keep posting :wavey:

report any bugs you can reproduce(consistantly and know the exact steps to replicating the problem). Otherwise they will never get fixed. Many people post stuff like this to the forum and then get angry when a/w doesnt fix stuff.
Also forgot to mention, make sure you check the "Release Notes" that come with maya before you report anything. Many bugs that they allready know about with possible work arounds are usually listed there. There are usually around a hundred recorded bugs that they didnt get around to fixing before releasing the software.

I would just like to point out that I haven't experienced any of these issues and I've been using 5.0 since it came out, every day. Perhaps some of the errors could be attributed to system specific bugs? I have actually been quite happy with Maya's stability after switching from the crash-happy 3ds Max. I hope you find out what is wrong.:hmm:

Couple things to check:
>>- Maya freezes up when attaching a complex poly mesh to a lowpoly wrap deformer.
It may not be frozen, just still processing. I've seen a wrap deformer take 20+ minutes to calculate on a mesh. The wrap deformer is extremely processor and memory intensive(can easily eat up 1 gig of ram so if your going into swap it will take even longer). Go into the options for it and turn on "Max Distance" option, move the wrapped object away from the wrapper and start at .1 and raise it till it fully encapsulates the entire surface.

Your probably running out of ram

Works fine here, sounds like video card driver issues. Try using the certified ones that a/w approves for maya and the gforce 4.

Computer crashing/resetting is not a maya issue, but a hardware issue on your part.

Sounds like something isnt installed properly.

I agree that half of the bugs is conflict problems...however, I have 1 gb of ram, when trying the calculation for rigid bodies it doesnt take any extra ram...and we have tried it on dual p4 with 2 gb of ram...same problem. Regarding HDD reset, it all started after installing maya 5. And it also happened on the other boxes as well, which we had fixed by entirely formatting the hdd. Regarding Geforece, we have all the certified drivers here. The reason Im posting this is maya 4.5 workes charming on the same boxes as m5.
I will post exact way to crash maya 5 :p :p in a bit..

what about the maya help webserver?... my webserver from a couple of days can't locate the index.html file, and im not the only one with this problem....
The WebServer is a shame, It worked for 2 days and no longer worked..., for me at least, and I donīt know why...
Of course you can always unzipped the help.zip files and check it anyway, but you have to search for a single string between thousands of html files!, itīs sick

Bug N1...really easy to fix probably, really stupid bug. When you perform bevel on a single edge, its ok cuz u can fix it, but if you perform it on 30 edges...well you can imagine.
Left image is bevel on standart maya poly plane, as you can see works fine. On the right is bevel on a modified maya plane, and you can see circled areas where edges become to split crazy.http://www3.telus.net/public/vinnik88/bugs/bug_01.jpg

naja.. as beaker mentioned: complaining in here is about as useful as complaining about the hole in the ozon layer at the bus station..
go to the alias page and log the bugs.. that is the only way to get rid of them...
and btw.. ALL versions of maya and any other 3d package have always been full of bugs.. live with them and workaround

but usually when you submit a bug that is already in the "known limitations" or not really a bug they simply dont answer :)

i hate that bug also with the bevel, such a simple tool yet
they dont seem to notice, it was there since 4.5 atleast

Thats more of an annoyance, not a bug. If you want certain features added into future versions of maya or things fixed that don't work how you want them to, goto the maya feature request page and add your votes:

There also seems to be a memory leak with Mental Ray and textures that are larger than 1024 pixels. The dreaded Runtime Error crashout.

You know I HATE rework my model !!!
but just yesterday maya 5.0 compeled me to rework my model ,you know I almost finished it!!!
I like model a character using low poly (not too low) and rig and skin then convert it to subd but yesterday I did the same work in maya 5.0 first time , it's all works, I saved my work (subd model),when I open it the subd model disappeared!!! It's bad.
I reworked it in maya 4.5

this has also happened to me in 4.5.....just make they are connected to a shading group(not just a shader)
