I am starting a completely 3D short. I'm not a complete newbie to CG. Most of my stuff has been Visual Effects and film editing. Now, I want to try an animation in C4D and final editing in After Effects.

Over the last year i have been in CG, I have modeled a couple cars and one of my friends has done a city. I want to combine them and create a wicked nice racing animation. Similar to kdub's race scene (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=69271). I know the general animation things, but my techniques are a bit shaky.

My first question is: tire and wheel rotation. How do I keep this constant?

Actually my first question should be: where should i start? A straight run with one car? and then move into drifting turns?

Thanks a ton!

Hi, Sounds like a lot of fun. Not to long ago there was a thread about tires rotating with the car on here. You should do a search. I even think someone posted a file. I know I have a file at work that is set up W/Expresso so the tire rotates when you move the car(its just an object actually)and If no one else sends you one before monday I can e-mail it to you then. This will save you lots of time.
About the shot. You have got to do storyboars. If you are already doing this sorry for stating the obvious. It will just save you so much time. I know because I am so good at trying with out them:scream: Its crazy. I will never do that again. It is so much better when you already have an idea of the shot. Sure its fun to fly around the model and find a new one too. Have you seen the new Matrix? The car chase alone is worth the eight bucks. There is a shot where the camera goes under a semi and shakes a little-it is soo good. If you have not seen it I think it would really inspire your race scene. My fist idea is perhaps a car really hauling a$$ and the camera is under it bouncing a little as the ground is close and roaring past. Perhaps it then moves to the back of the car and moves up the back-real close to the car so just say the chrome is filling the shot -then the paint the when it get to the top you can either show the driver and extablish the character of show what is now in front of the car-perhaps as soon as most of the car is in the shot is has to make a 90 degree turn and goes sscreeching around a corner. Anyway now I have gone on and on. I hope that gives you some ideas and look foreward to checking it out.

The topic Wilson mentioned:
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57416

I never succeeded in getting the correct position determined by wheel rotation and speed. I need something like a recursive formule to add up current and previous rotations and speed. I am still positive that this should be possible but it seems no-one has gone further with my xpresso code.

Astrofish's attempt worked nice, but in his example the rear wheels steer too and solving that is harder I think.

Anyway: the whole purpose of the code is getting realistic car behaviour for car-race shorts like you. I still want to make one some day.

If you haven't done already, look at "Getaway in Stockholm 2" (illegal streetrace movie) for great inspiration. It is sooo cool and I must have viewed it a dozen times. They basicly have one camera mounted on one cars bumper and have another car race in front of it on public roads. The low camera gives a great perspective and sense of speed (they go well over 300km/h at one part). The film doesn't have a story, plot or dialogs and it basicly has one camera but it does have the best racing you have ever seen. And that's what counts.

Thanks a ton! I have seen the Matrix and its insane car chase scene. I have also seen the film Getaway in Stockholm I, II, & III. All are very very good. Even without a plot.

I will definitely start with a storyboard. I thought about just winging it, but I think I will take your advice and work one out. I plan to do a few test shots just to practice. The first I want is a camera nearly parallel to the ground looking into the distance at a Viper racing towards it....the car passes directly over the cam shaking it a bit [just like you described Wilson 3D], and then a second camera picking up on the side of the vehicle like in GIS 2.

All I need to figure out is the 2 camera part....never done that :(. The tires shouldnt be a problem, no turning will be involved so I will just do a couple keyframes.
