View Full Version : Art dump: Characters
cholbrow 11-09-2008, 04:41 AM Monsterlab Wii came out last week meaning that i can show my work. Also Backbone vancouver has been shut down so i need to find new job. Here are some of my characters from monster lab as well as some more recent personal work
The character team on monster lab consisted of:
myself
Derek Goodswimmer and Beth Dewhirst. We had some help on the monster parts from our sonic/bomberman team near the end.
All of these monsterlab characters are modeled by me and textured by Beth Dewhirst
NIS characters are usually 4000 triangles or less, monsters are 4500 textures are all 1024s monsters are broken into legs arms x2 head and torso, but add up to a single 1024.

is that robo in your avatar? that's awesome!
i've gotta say, those are some cool characters. i.. dislike what you've done to poor zero though. those shoulderpads and that face aren't exactly how we all know him. he's usually got very simplistic shoulderpads that'd protect his shoulder area, and a young face (though animé will do that to ya)

Thanks All
Dekker3D: ya I wanted to get away from the anime look. I think I see Megaman differently then most people. If you think about it he is an out dated model, (80 years out of date) reprogrammed to go around killing innocent looking worker robots. In the game you are armed to the teeth. Your opponents only have pick axes, screw drivers and so forth. I figure the robot slaves have rebelled and Megaman (+ Zero) are made to crush the resistance.
Here are all the heads I modeled for the game. (monster heads anyway) Once again Beth Dewhirst did the textures, which really sell these low rez models. The Crystal head at the bottom was textured by Stephen Pearce.
They are less then 900 tris and have a single 512 texture. (in game they have a 256 + spec and glow maps)

I really like the styles on those characters. Your own take on Zero/Protoman is particularly interesting. Really nice work all around.

Chris dude,
nice work man, i love the style of the monster lab suff. the silhouettes of the models for ML are great, nice variation and style. the texture work is ace by beth as well.
I told you already what i think of zero on msn, but again, looks awesome, you should post a closeup of the face.

hey Chris,
Nice work man. I really like the latest head shots you added. Hopefully we will get to see some high poly models and normal maps on your personal soon. I think your Warhammer character could have benefited from that.
Keep up the good work,
Fernando

Wow, these models just _ooze_ style. Great proportions and lighting--they almost look like 2D art with the thin rim lighting you've used.
Bummer about Backbone--have any other studios in Vancouver closed recently?

Robot Revolutionaries. Each is about 3000 Tris with one 512 texture
To save money and time we used Mable Chan's Robot Kid model as a base with Kim Sawula's texture.
