Ok...Here's some render times for 6 v 7.

(first up my system)

Win Xp Pro 32bit.
QuadCore AMD 9500. (2.2gig)
3.25Gig Ram (windows doesn't see 4 Gig).
GeForce 7600 256ram.

The scene is the attached image (very basic scene ) Default atmos. All I did was changed the Lighting settings in both 6-7.

Render setting: Default "FINAL" 20% texture filtering (smoothing.)

Vue6
Global Ambiance 00:33
Ambient Occ 02:14
Global Illumination 02:45
Global Radiosity 04:46

Vue7
Global Ambiance 00:39
Ambient Occ 00:55
Global Illumination 00:58
Global Radiosity 00:59

Check the image...notice the clouds in 7 are smoother...nicer.

Hope this explains a bit.

Great improvment.
I wonder if the flickering problem in animations as been solved.
Thanks for your info.

Thats cool.

I have done a comparison between 6 and 7 with regards to flicker...I have a video showing the results... 7 is better than 6. The scene was rendered with default "FINAL" render setting 10% texture filtering (REALLY BASIC). A "Summer cherry tree" was used. The new trees seem to take forever to render..I guess there's a crap load more detail in some of the new trees.

They both have a lot of flicker cos my settings were very low..if at all, But the results are definitely in favour of 7..the images had more detail...and 1/2 as much flicker.

(dont know how to post video on this site...help would be nice)

You can't upload video here, but you can use one of the 1000 free hosting / backup services available on the net.

Do a quick google search for one that suits you.

I noticed that the specks on vue 7 is for the use of max 2009. Anyone worked with 2008 64bit and vue 7 Xstream?

What's the going solution to the flicker when comping in After Effects? Personally I've used any one of the several ReVision Smooth Kit tools - with mixed results of course. What does everyone else use? Or is there no one consensus... Maybe we should petition ReVision to make a plug specifically designed to eliminate flicker in 3D procedurals, since it certainly isn't limited to just EON's trees and such. Pretty much any procedural in a long shot will generally tend to flicker to some degree or another, without jumping through annoying hoops like rendering double size/slight blur/scaling down, etc...

Those v7 times are VERY encouraging! I may just upgrade right now - was waiting for one of Cornocopia's all-the-time sales but I've really been eager to start playing with the new features... looking at those better render times is all the excuse I need!

I recommend trying the PLE...before you buy, to be sure.

vfx cast has a lots of free tutorials and 3d related stuff, and I believe you can showcase a
sample of flickering videos, that is on topic I think.

vimeo is a little bit slow sometimes to convert the videos

I recently upgraded my ReVisionFX Smooth Kit to the latest, and also bought their DeNoise filter. Between the two of them, I'm hoping one will take care of any flicker. Going to do some tests today on some old animations and will report back here.

Ideally it would be great if the AA settings could be turned down enough that the flicker is there, but able to be knocked down with a simple filter pass through After Effects.

I know its been a problem before with other procedural textures in most any application, and generally the AA settings required to fix the problem up front are just too costly in terms of render times.

Plus a little softness is always a good thing when going to NTSC, just to get that nice smooth look - used to be the dead giveaway between something done on a Henry or a Flame, and a home job done in AE. At least things have gotten better over the years...

Depend of your shot, but I've used Reelsmart motion blur to hide some problem
with 3d grass, ( not exactly vue grass: It was a bunch of 2D card with a looped movie of grass coming from vue rendered in Lightwave )

cheers
Xavier
