Hey guys,
Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on how to go ahead with MAX and Swift to get this feel (see image)
It's a piece taken from the osbournes website.

what kind of lighting I should use for this and what specific settings I need to be carefull about in the material editor to get this feel ?

Help appreciated !

try to put another ligth source. to fill darkness areas or use an ambient ligth, with intensity less than the main ligth

your example is emulating ascii art. there's no renderer for that that I'm aware of.
ascii has no anti-aliasing. a way to simulate this might be to use the illustrate! plug-in.
Then again, you should be able to do something similar with the pulse or vecta plugin. The key is NOT to use lights, as the vector renderers can't handle soft shadows at all so the shadows are always blown out. Default lighting might keep everything constant enough to keep the surfaces unified. Another option would be to apply self-illuminating materials to everything.

That's the usual course of action. I've never worked on a Flash project that I didn't have to hand-paint the Swift-rendered results (no matter what you do with lighting/materials). Handling shadows separately can also help -- duplicate symbols, re-fill with a solid color, then adjust tint/alpha to suit. You can even break apart the individual frames and soften the curves to create sort of a soft shadow ... sort of

good luck!

FWIW, I've definitely been able to render from max with flat self-illum materials to vecta and keep the exported colors with the 'toon' look.

this is what I came up with
it's a lot of work , espescially the repainting in Flash.

I understand that you might get similar results just by exporting everything out of max by using self illuminating objects and vector like outputs ... but for this specific look I found it to be more suiteable to go over almost everything in Flash again ...

link is deleted :) (sorry guys)
