Pretty sweet!
It was a little bit sudden transitioning to the explosion, but definitely a cool clip!

good job! I would've liked to have seen the music slow as the cars entered "bullet time" and when the car explodes it definately would've been nice to keep the music going but maybe just toned it down instead of cutting it completely. You did a great job on modeling the environment and vehicles.. the people though could use some work (i.e. textures, clothing design). I think you also did a great job with the timing and synchronizing the music to the action... If you keep at it you have a bright future ahead of you in 3D! Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed watching it!

Very Very nice :)

Loved it alot

I really liked when the dark driver turned into the angel.

The fire in the explosion scene seemed a bit distant from the car towards the end of the explosion.

OK You had me hooked until the race started. Then it just got kind of silly. You need to loosen those characters up a bit. They were way too stiff and floaty the entire animation. The car animation also felt a bit off. Play Grand Tourismo for a good example of car physics. All in all though, a really fun idea but I think your execution was a bit weak. Sorry for being mean, but that's my honest reaction.

Wow, that was awesome!

The surroundings were a bit so so I think: pretty undetailed and boring. But the car animation and the whole idea is sweet.

It had it's ups and downs.

Great work though!

pretty good animation. I agree that the character animation needs some work (I think that was mentioned in one of the earlier replies). I also think that the enginen noise and soundrack do not mix well. Maybe tone the engine noise down or something

Anyway it still a great start. the transition from live vid to digital was pretty good

Very well done.
There are some little tweaks that could be done here and there, but all of our work is that way.
I thought it flowed very well.
With the skills you have at 18, dont even worry about a job.
You have many, many years to improve.

only thing i didnt like was the transitiion from her to the explosion. it was way too sudden. other than that, the engine noises needed to be muffled a little more so they dont interrupt the music playing. nice work though!

Ok...where to start...there are too many comments to address everyone though that is what i ususally do, but over all thanks soo much for both the good and the crits! A few things, about the music. I used this music long before evanescence became popular. As you can tell it was more or less built around the music. The point is, I wasn't trying to be trendy the song just worked when the idea actually started brewing inside my head :). About the sound issues, all are correct i wouldn't argue a minute.

About brazil, i used no special features at all. I could pretty much render them the same seamlessly minus the kick ass lights cameras and carpaint material. ***BUT**** With a scene with 2, 500k poly cars, 2, 300k poly rigged characters, reflections and a rather long while not complex environment. Max scanline just died...i mean taking 10 min a frame render times cuz of ram handling. Brazil....1000% faster on some scenes (not exaggerating) The renderer truely made this possible. Not to mention the superior image filters  It is important to understand that brazil does great scattering and amazing "pretty stuff" but it is one sweet all-around renderer that will handle anything you can throw at it...reflect it, and then render it faster than anything you have ever seen, on a computer that aint so great.

I guess for the most advanced brazil thing i used was the glossy reflection on the road sign...but regardless, this thing would not have been done until....I would have given up with those scanline rendertimes....(don't kill me discreet, I love everything else :))

WOW!

I first saw this at school and then decided to download it again when I got home. Very impressive man, the camera work and editing is top notch. I don't care too much for the linear camera, though I do love the composition of your shots - I suppose you really like "the Fast and the Furious". Anyway, great modelling, you have great things in your future.

:bounce: WONDERFUL! but...

great concept, excellent directing (the live action footage even more then the CG)

your framing is good, but the camera motion couldbe more dynamic. and some shot could be timed better or have better cinematic flow. the soundtrack is very well suited and the visuals flow along well with it. sound FX could use work though. models are good, texturing could use some work. characters are stiff indeed, mainly the arms and facial expressions.

i think next to better animation and dynamism in camera motion, the short would benefit most from an even more consistent shading style. i mean i like how the cars have colors and the environment is more greyscale, but this could be taken further. the shading of the characters feels odd. maybe some postproduction could have brought the colors ,shading and filter more like the life action footage. i mean you can go really far here, like even making the explosion fx toon style, if i may carry on from your vision, i think that would work well. great FX on the Angel though.

somethings a bit odd about the story though, when the winner gets out, becomes angel and destroys the car but resues the girl.. but allaz it's a dream sequence.

don't get me wrong here, these critics are only possible because it is executed so well, and so i hope they are constructive enough to keep you going.

maybe with all the comments here and your own, do a retrospect now the work is done, take note of what was good, what was bad, what could be improved upon, what could be left out, added in, ...

You have a bright CG carrer before you, exelent talent and great vision too boot. Keep Going ! wonder where you will be in two years time. - would be great to see a remake by then too :airguitar

hey bro thats pretty cool,
what kind of work are you looking for??
have you thought about looking for internships?
i think some one in your position may benefit more from the experiance you might gain interning at a game or or animtion firm, than working animating logo's.
i only say this becuse i think your a pritty talented kidd, but you are still very very very ruff, but with the right guidance, in a few years you might working at a good firm doing some cool stuff.
you should also see if you can take some more art and 3d classes too, that is if you are intersted in making a career out of 3d.

Great animation! seriously I love it.

But here is my crit: The live action stuff was dragging, I almost stopped watching, next time you may want to think about build up through pacing your shots better. Second, the shot of the cars after they slide on screen, introducing the characters seems static because it's a little too straight on after the great right to left action shot that comes before it. Third people have mentioned, the conflict is confused as the angel switches sides with no reasoning. It may have been better to have the guy split too two angels, one light, one dark, and then you could have planned the last shot a little more clear like this: the dark angel grows blade, the chick looks in mirror to see or turns head around to see the dark angel coming, thus maybe you could have her try and evade, or some other kind of action, but her knowing she is gonna fail would make her bailing action more believeable, meanwhile you could have the light angel established as watching also, next she bails, just before the dark splits the car, and the light swoops into the blast, will he save her?, finally you see out of the blast the light angel fly out with her inhis arms sheltering her as best he can and still flying.
That's just one take on it, definitly not the only way to do it, but hopefully gives you some ideas!

Captain
06-15-2003, 04:09 AM
You have gotten all sorts of praise from people, so i decided to talk about the other things, i mean, how could you grow anyways? I thought it was Extremly Overly Dramatic, The music has become very cliche and concept felt like an excuse for fast and the furious style car chases and matrix slowmos.

And now that your mad at me (sorry :() I will go to the good :)

It is a finished piece and remains constant from beggining to end, congrats, you did something I havn't been able to yet (finish an animation from concept to execution), and no matter what i could gripe about, the fact remains taht your devotion is amazing. Good Job, and Best of Luck :)

By the way, the timing and that flash when the music really starts up and the cars race from off the screen on that drift, that was a beautifull thing. That single few second moment was so well done, beyond proffesional and I can't get enough of it :D (going to watch again, and keeping the flash concept in mind for expermintation)

-Captain (hope the first part wasn't too negative)

50 gigs of bandwidth....goodbye paycheck :buttrock: regardless, once again thanks for all the crits and complements. I would like to adrdess the fact that the music has been used way too much, and also another fact about me personally.

The music. When i first heard this song, long long before it came out in stores or even appeared on the internet...months ago, i got the vision of the 360 modena sliding around the corner in slowmo, just like it did. Later i got the short concept and integrated this shot into it. As you can see the music matches the action to a T more or less, this is due to the fact that I drew up a storyboard, edited together with music, and then animated/rendred frame for frame. I did not make the anim and then add the music. When i first chose to use this music it would have been a better choice, and now i do realize the crazy popularity of it, but it would have been impossible to change the music.

And about me. I should have explained it in the first post, but i love cars, ferraris specifically. And not just love, i mean i go crazy when i see em, ask my friends, they have deemed my reaction the "cargasm". Also I am a crazy thinker, i have the craziest ideas, and this was sorta like a little autobiographic piece.

Otherwise thanks for the comments again, i appreciate all your opinions.

Captain - why would I mind a few crits? I did put it up on a forum of some serious talent. If i wanted to be praised, i would just keep showing it to my friends. I do however know most of its problems, I just didn't have time or the capability to fix them.
