khendar 11-28-2008, 12:31 AM I thought I got it, but here I am once again. I am trying to change the challenge avatar & the Thread top, so it will keep updating along with me. I downloaded the cg uploader, and it's worked just fine... the only problem is that the file was loaded into my regular gallery, and not into the steampunk Thread.
I tried to replace the code line in called: "Latest Update: Concept / pre-visualization: pinocchio"- but the avatar stayes the same as it was- showing the first drawing I published.
Maybe I messed it up while trying. If someone can help me out, I'll be grateful .
My Thread is: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=278&t=699393
Thanks
Lior
Make sure you are using the CGChallenge Uploader (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/challengeuploader.jar) not the regular CGUploader. They are two seperate tools.
Normal image updates should be submitted using the Submit Entry Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/submit_entry.php). You should only use the Challenge Uploader if your images are larger than 150kb or you are uploading a video.

Get your team member to check their email spam boxes as the email may have been junked by mistake. Also make sure that they check the right email address - it will be the one their cgtalk account is registered with.
I'll have a look into a way to sent them their invite links again in the meantime.
Yep, he found it! Thank you very much for help!

Hi,
This still unclear for me: can I wrote my own invented legend and use it as a story for my image?? Does it disqualify my entry?

M.
The object of the challenge is to take a recognisable mythological story and adapt it with a steampunk style. If you make the story up, its not myth its just story writing, and not in the spirit of the challenge theme.
Of course no one is going to stop you from doing it, but I doubt the judges will look highly upon your piece if its just a made up story.

Hi, I have a question about submitting.
I have no time for now and can't submiting milestones frequently, but I plan to take a vacation and focus the challenge. Is it ok to submit nothing excluding a two weeks period and submit several milestones everyday for these 2 weeks?
There is no problem with it.
Hitting and showing the milestones make for a better thread and a few extra cookie points at judging, but the frequency you do that with, and when during the challenge period, are dictated by what you can do and when, nothing else.
There's nothing in the rules or guidelines saying how many and spaced how the milestones should be :)

I have two questions one of them is very wide and not only for me. Its regarding posts in other forums and communities. Can a Steampunk entrant post the milestones in other forums than cg talk?
the second question is regarding the voice over actors and might seem a bit obvious but for me it isn't. If I use actors voice in my SOLO ( no teams) video it will be considered a team entry?
Thank you very very much in advance

Best,
Check the rules regarding posting on other sites. Yes you are allowed, but we reserver certain rights to the final image.
You may use extra talent in non-team entries - so long as you are the only visual artist. Non visual elements such as music, foley and voice acting are not awarded prizes and are not being judged (although, your selection of particular elements may be). Physical actors are also not considered part of the team. ALL elements that you did you create must be credited however.

Hi, I don't wish to disturb or anything like that, but I'm in sort of a jam. I've had to send in my computer for repairs, and I'm still looking forward to getting it back. I did however read somewhere, within the vast collection of INFO you guys have put together, the fact that late entries, or so to speak, entries lacking lots of comments on the WIP stage, will be somewhat degraded. I will be able to post Wips starting the 20th of December... is that too late? should I forget about it, or still post my work knowing I'm going to have the final image ready still, a few days before the deadline?
Thanks for your time, and pardon me if someone else posted this same question already, but I got quite tired after reading the first 7 pages, so here I am, posting....

I am new at actively participating in the forums here so please forgive my naivety. I have been trying to submit some WIP images of my challenge image. But cant figure out how. I looked at the CGUploader but that seems to put it in my portfolio. I also tried "new thread" in the Challenge area but i get a "TacitusD, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:..." What am i doing wrong?

All of the information you need is on the Steampunk Challenge Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk).
Image submissions up to 150kb should be uploaded using the Submit Entry Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/submit_entry.php). Images over 150kb and video submissions should be made using the Challenge Uploader (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/challengeuploader.jar).
This has been mentioned several times in this thread, please take the time to read it through.

Hey Khendar,
I send you a private message about Team management last week but I'm not sure if you have received it.
Someone left our team so I need to remove him from the team list. also when someone joins, the other person gets kicked off or their names gets swapped. How do we fix this?
Is there anyway we could have more control over team management?
Thanks in advanced.

So i posted my concept and then i posted a WIP. When i went to check to see if both images had gotten up it looks like my WIP image was posted twice. Do i need to repost my Concept. Or when you post a new milestone does it replace the old one? I kind of have the feeling i screwed it up. Let me know what i did/need to do. Thanks for the assistance.

Hey, is this restricted to Legends and Myths, or can we draw from old fiction? I've got an idea mixing a scene from The Lord of the Rings (FOTR) and Stargate. I know the Stargate section wouldn't be accepted, but what about the Lord of the Rings base?

Hey, I've got an idea but I'm unsure whether or not it would be accepted.
Is it allowed to use a fiction scene as the basis for the image? I've got an idea for a scene from The Lord of the Rings (FOTR).

Whenever you upload a new milestone the new image is put into the first post of your challenge thread so that the first post is always your latest progress. It looks like your Concept was uploaded but for some reason the thread wasn't updated. Its up to you if you want to upload it again, but I doubt that it will have much bearing on the judging :)

I just found out about this challenge today:) I'm thinking about going with a regular myth however my first idea was a Hero vs monster. The hero and monster are from different myths so I would sort of have to make up a story to put them together. Would it be better to go with a regular myth.

one more last Q please:
if my character by chance was the same as someones's character is it acceptable ? or shall i find a different character?
(is it possible to make a character that someone else is working on ?)
considering the concept is different!
walrus
12-04-2008, 03:07 PM
Nothing in the rules say that everyone has to do different myths or that any one person has "dibs" on a legend. There are already 2 or more entries of several myths. Feel free to do your own thing... just make sure that you don't borrow ideas from the people doing the exact same myth, as 2 or more nearly-identical entries wouldn't sit well with anyone! :)

There is no usage priorities on contents or any such things.
Nothing and nobody prevents you from using icarus even if there are already three entires about the character, nor it will penalize you during entries judgement.
Originality points come from interpretation and how much you flesh out something, not from how many people use that particular starting point.

I've been doing some research and it could go either way but, the story of the three little pigs dates back to the late 18th century. Originally more morbid with the consumption of the pigs and then later the wolf in a stew, the more recent versions are softened for the kiddies. The question is, is the story an acceptable "Myth or Legend"? I didn't think of it too much until recently and I want to make sure we don't end up doing a story that isn't within the theme. Let me know please.
Thanks!!!

Hi, I hope that I'm not repeating question, but haven't found an clear answer.
We make a 90sek (+/-a few sek) animated short movie + time for credits and making of. We have to make a 30sek trailer of it as well? and as our final entry should be a long movie consisting of a ~30s trailer + credits and making of + ~90s short in a single one video file? Or a trailer shoudl be a separate upload.
Thanks

I am hoping someone can help me.
I am trying to upload a video using th "CGporfolio uploader" and I keep getting a message after I click "upload" that says. "This feature is only available to CGS members". Does this message pop up for everyone? It happens after the uplaod gets to 100%. I know my username and password are correct... and all my file formats are correct.
If my file gets uplaoded correctly will the CG uploader tell me? It just sits on the same screen with all the fields filled out and has that same "This feature is only available to CGS members" at the bottom. I think something is wrong.
Thanks.

Alright.. I now understand the difference in the .jav files. It is strange that one works for me and the other doesn't. The "challengeuploader.jar" file does not want to run for me. I have Mac OS 10.4 and use JRE 5... I asked a friend with the same OS to see if it works for him and he also has the same issue.
The error message I get is
"The jar file "challengeuploader.jar" couldn't be launched. Check the Console for possible error messages"
I DID have somebody run it who has OS 10.5 and only after they set it to JRE 6 did it run.
My programmer friend (and apologize beecause he's a jerk sometimes ) says there's no way it works with JRE 5.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

If you friend reckons that it works in JRE6 then try upgrading to 6.

I can't upgrade to 6 because Mac OS 10.4 doesn't support it. Only 10.5 supports it and that costs money. Surely someone has run into this issue. There must be other Mac users who have encountered this.
khendar
12-10-2008, 04:16 AM
Unfortunately I don't think there is much we can do to help you. The uploader was compiled for JRE6 which means it simply wont run on JRE5. I'm afraid you'll either have to upgrade your OS or use another computer to submit your files.

The only way you can enter two is by having one in video and one in image. But for each of those categories, you might be better off focusing all of your energy into one solid entry instead of dividing your time between two. Just pick one! :)

This classifies as pre-made materials - if the judges can tell you've just jammed something into your scene then they're not going to be so favorable in the voting. So it's sort of up to you - we do allow pre-existing assets however.

Sorry about this basic question but I'm wondering if I have created the correct size .psd file following submission guidelines. In Photoshop when creating a new document, are these settings for a portrait layout correct?
Width: 2657
Height: 3636
Resolution: 300
Color Mode: RGB Color 8 bit
Background Contents: Transparent
Image Size is then listed as 27.6M
Part of what is confusing me is that this seems to be a very large file size to start with...the blank image with these settings should be 27.6M ?
Thank you...

Hi guys!
I'm having difficulties with uploading my final entry image on "Steampunk" CG Challenge. For some reason (either) the hostname, username and/or password are not valid and I can not establish a FTP connection with your server.
Please advise.

To everyone who has trouble with the FTP submission:
I e-mailed about this problem some weeks ago.
They said they were having issues with the submission servers and are unable to accept final entries. Final instructions will be e-mailed to you when the problems are fixed.

No one is going to be penalised for late submission if the submission server is not fixed by the the deadline. The problem affects everybody equally, until the server is fixed, no one is able to submit their final piece. So there is no reason to panic.

I have some queries regarding uploading. Please help me with the solutions. These queries are :
I have received user name & password but while loggin in it showing as incorrect id & password. i am quite tensed how will I upload the final image.
My final image format is A4 300Dpi resolution(tif format), but the pixel ratio is little less than your guideline. Will this be accepted?
Do I have to submit the wire mode and occlusion (image size) mode along with the final image?
I want to upload some notes regarding my work. How will I upload it?
Please help me with the solutions.
Thank You.

the guideline is only a guideline, if you can not reach the pixel ratio that mentioned in the instructions, just submit what you have, it will be accepted.
your final submission should contain only one image.

I hope this hasn't been asked/answered before. I've tried to read through the thread, but might have missed a post of two.
I've participated in the Video Category.
I wan't to render out my film in 16:9 format, so initially I figured that 1280*720 would be sufficient, and then just scale it down into a 640*480 format with black boxes on top and bottom.
Doing some rendertests today though, I can see that it would help A LOT, if I just render in the delivered fomat (640*360 that would be).
My question is, whether it would be a bad idea to render in such a low resolution?

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
FINAL SUBMISSION DETAILS
Okay folks its the news you've all been waiting for. We've got the final challenge submission details sorted out for you.
To simplify things for everybody we have decided to use the Challenge Uploader (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/challengeuploader.jar) to turn in your final submissions. This will eliminate any problems with the FTP set up.
Help on using the ChallengeUploader can be found at the CGUploader (http://wiki.cgsociety.org/index.php/Help:CGUploader) page.
Please make sure you download the Uploader from the link below, not from the help page.
ChallengeUploader.jar (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/challengeuploader.jar)
When using the Uploader, enter your CGTalk username and password, and then from the Category drop down box, select either Steampunk; Myths and Legends - Image: Final Image or Steampunk; Myths and Legends - Video:Finished Video, depending on which challenge you have entered.
Complete all the fields in the uploader before submitting your file.
Some submission guidelines for you:
Image Guidelines
High Quality (95-100%) RGB JPEG, maximum possible resolution (without upsampling).
Image dimensions should be print resolution (as large as you can possibly render). Do not send in a low-resolution placeholder and ask us to get back to you, as we won't.
A guideline is 2657 pixels wide and/or 3636 high, 300 DPI.
DO NOT upsample your images to achieve higher resolution. If you cannot reach the desired full-page resolution, just send in what you have.
More information about image size and quality is included in the Challenge Deliverables (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/deliverables.php) page
Video Guidelines
Must be encoded in FLV format
Can be in 4:3 (eg 640x480) or 16:9 (eg 640x360) aspect ratio
Submitted via the Challenge Uploader
Information about encoding and tools to use is included in the Challenge Deliverables (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/deliverables.php) page
If you have submitted your final piece via the Uploader, but at a lower quality, you can upload your final image again at a higher quality.
More information regarding final submissions can be found at the Submit Final Image (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/final_image.php) page

630 * 360 is fine. It's more important to have smooth animation then higher resolution. The human perceptual system makes moving images look higher resolution than still images.
As you have found -- its way faster to render at the smaller resolution. If this lets you it;s probably better to use spare CPU power to do better antialiasing then render at higher resolution. Don't make the mistake of thinking that it;s better to render at double resolution and scale down to improve antialiasing -- this is very innefficent compared to the antialiasing algorithms buit into renderers like mental ray.

I already asked on previous page but since I see MarkSnoswell is back in discussion I better asking again. ExHolidays would be a nice excuse to extend the deadline for video category as well. I had ambitious plan to create a closed story for this myths/legends topic and some extra time could bring it closer to reality. I am not going to give up this challenge if your answer will be NO, there always is a chance to finish on time. But it will be very nice and essential if you could make the statement around these days. If I am the only one who took not effective direction this time just ignore this post. Thanks and sorry for spaming.

yeah, the deadline changes are part of these challenges since EON what I remember. So somewhere deep inside your creative mind you can hope for it. We don't need to discuss the importance of deadlines. The image category have it extended because of server problems. I believe we all can use the extra time without doubts. It just happend I had to ask. Good luck

Yes we're having server issues at the moment. We're working on getting them resolved but in the meantime you may experience problems with making your final submission. Don't panic, there are still a few days to go and we will not penalise people if our servers are not online in time.

So that no one gets the wrong idea about this, the deadline for the Image category has NOT been extended! I'm not sure where this idea came from, but the deadline has NOT changed.
If the server is still having issues when the deadline rolls around, then we will have no choice but to roll it back a bit. But there are still a few days left to go, and the deadline stands as it is.

Did you check the console ? Are you receiving any error messages ? Are you following the instructions for running the uploader ?
There is an issue with running the Uploader on OSX due to the incompatible version of Java on the operating system.
If you cant get the uploader working then send me an email when you are ready for final submission and I'll sort out a solution.

I get this idea from reading the deadline informations listed on instruction page
The Image category will run for 8 weeks. Finishing on 12 January 2009.
The Video categories will run for 12 weeks. Finishing on 03 February 2009.
Starting from 10 November 2008 for both categories... 8 weeks are ending on 5 January 2009, 12 weeks are ending on 03 February 2009. Just compare it to Uplift Universe official deadlines at least - I hardly believe you wanted to add only 3 weeks extra for video folks this time. I donīt want to go down the way of speculations, just donīt call me the way you did in your replay since it is a bit on edge to me. I am not a new challenger with no idea about how the things are working here, so please, I just asked if it is possible to add extra time. Thanks.

It seems that there might have is a slight miscalculation on our part. I can see how that may have been misleading. but the deadlines have been set at the 12th of Jan and the 3rd of Feb since the beginning. They haven't been pushed at all.
I apologise if my tone seemed abrupt, but I was confused as to where you got the idea the deadline had been moved, and I wanted to make sure that everyone understood that the deadlines stand as they were originally announced.
Any decision regarding the extension of deadline would have to be agreed upon by CGS staff, judges and forum leaders, so we will only consider a change if absolutely necessary.

Yeah I think I noticed this miscalculation in "hot times" of server issues and upload problems and found it as a sort of silent change. All is understandable now. Thanks and sorry. Better to squeez out what is possible from the rest of the following weeks :arteest:

Which final image does the jury judge? The smaller final or the full size 300DPI image? My thread had both but looked like a double post so I only left the full size final which I uploaded using the ChallengeUploader. Sorry just want to be sure I don't get disqualified over something I missed.

The Final Full size image is a requirement for completion. I am not sure which gets judged to be honest, but you must have the full sized image to be considered for judging. If you have the final full size image in your thread, then you've completed the requirements.

Hi to everyone!
First, I'd like to thank you! You are answering all posts and this means much to all of us, I'm sure.
I'm from Turkey and I'm writing my problem directly:
I know, theree is a little time before the challenge is ver for the 2D cathegory; I'm working full time to catch the deadline. But today I noticed that it's not possible to upload my latest WIP because of the maintenance. I've checked ChallengeUploader, but after seeing the maintenance on the site, I decided to check it again. And there is a problem here, I think.
In the ChallengeUploader Dialog Box, CANT SELECT ANY CATEGORIES(they are not visible)When I click on empty category box it says
"could not select database(synergy)Can't connect to local MySQLserver through socket var\lib\mysql\mysqlsock'(111)..............blah blah blah.....Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started)" ......(thats all)
I also can't enter my username and password. And "Upload File" button is not active.
I'm curious about the problem. Is the problem related to my computer and my java settings OR is it a server problem(because these are the last days, maybe there are lots of tries for the upload)? Do you have any idea? Or are there anyone having the same problem???
If I asked a dumb question, please forgive me; I'm not familiar with the uploader thing. I know there is still some time before the deadline but I'm in the countryside and if the problem is with my computer, then I'll go to the nearest city:) So, I'm asking before it's too late.
Thanks for your help, I really don't want to be disqalified because of my bad luck:)
Oh, and that was a really breathtaking challenge, thanks for the entertaining topic!

THE LAST TOOTH FROM ARTHUR (TOOTH FAIRY)
Once upon a time king Arthur did not want to go to sleep because of a problem with his tooth. His last tooth was wobbly. His son, who saw that his father was worrrying, asked him why he was so afraid to loose his tooth since he already lost a lot. King Arthur explained that he had a dream the tooth fairy was taking his last tooth. Since his childhood he was afraid of the tooth fairy.
His son laughed and told the father:This is just mythos and legend!
http://www.heriirawan.com/CG_Forum/Stymphalian_birds_Final_Irawan.jpg
STYMPHALIAN BIRDS (GREEK MYTHOLOGY)
In Greek mythology, Stymphalian birds were man-eating birds with wings of brass and sharp metallic feathers they could launch at their victims, and were pets of Ares, the god of war. Furthermore, their dung was highly toxic. They had migrated to Lake Stymphalia in Arcadia to escape a pack of wolves, and bred quickly and took over the countryside, destroying local crops and fruit trees. Ridding the land of these birds was one of Heracles' Twelve Labors, and some sources claim the Stymphalian birds were the same avians that attacked the Argonauts.

Does the upload problem for final images using the uploader also prevent me from uploading further WIPs for the video challenge.
It says since a couple of hours:

Or is there a limited number of submissions per day?

I noticed many of the 3D entries are still far from finished and there is a very large amount of more completed 2D entries, with many 2D artists able to entertain multiple concept ideas. I'm not trying to sound petty, it's just the nature of the two media. I think that even a small deadline push would help out many people. For me, it looks like I can rush to make the deadline, but even a day or two extension would probably be a relief. I can't say sleep has been one of my current hobbies :P Not to mention that rushing to finish a project does great injustice to the quality of the final piece.

Heh, I'd love a deadline extension :). But at the least, I'm having the same problem uploading, it says I've uploaded an image within 90 seconds, when it's been well over an hour. Also, for some reason my last update was put in with a time stamp hours behind the actual posting time?

i'm thinking the same thing. i have no chance of wining, but i want to finish at least. even another day would make a difference since i was thinking the deadline was the 15th until yesterday.
Up until a couple of weeks back, for some reason I thought it was the 3rd of Feb. Then I realised that was for the video challenge. Damn near had a heart attack when I realised :)
Still doesn't work for me :(.

Same issue here, I just completed the upload a couple of seconds ago, and then I got the same message, that I have already submitted an entry in the last 90 seconds (which does not apply).
So, are we really done with the final image upload?

When you go to the "submit entry" page you can see just on top the countdown for the image and the video category...This is for all people the same and I hope at least this information is reliable...

Will you still be able to upload images via the contest submit form after the end of the week? This is if I intended not to finish on time, but to take my time and finish it a little while later. I don't intend to enter my piece for the contest, but a portfolio. Or should an external image host be used at that point?

You cannot submit your final full size image with the Upload Final Image page on the challenge site. Thats why we created the Uploader for you to use.
Your entry appears to be fine. We have your final full size image. I have hidden the full size ones because some people were concerned about their full size pieces being available on the net.

Hello,
I'm in the Video entry and got a little trouble with uploading a WIP image. When you normally upload and it succeeds, it shows you another page to show you the newly uploaded image together with all the posts.
When i did it just a few minutes ago, it didn't redirect me to the page bu instead gave me a red digit number where the errors go when you have forgotten something or attached a too big file. So i thought it got rejected and tried again. After 4 times i started looking for the problem but couldn't find anything.
But then it seems the image got posted 4 times on my thread. Is there a way for you guys to delete the last 3 posts of the same image ?
I manually removed the last 3 out of sight in the thread myself. Just for appearance. But maybe you should look into the bug

I have a small question, I hope you don't mind :)
I'm in the video category, and suppose to deliver a 30 sec. version of my film followed by my full version followed by a making of (if I want to), right?
You state that the 30 sec. version is for initial judging. Does that mean, that the full version won't seen unless you are in doubt about a winner?
Because my film is most certainly made for (and storyboarded/planned) a 1:20 version, or about that timeframe, so the 30 sec. won't give the same effect as the full version, in any way.
So will the full version be judged as well?
Another small in the same category:
The 30 sec. version, should that be a trailer to the full version, or should it tell the same story with ending and all, as the full version?
Cheers and thanks in advance :)

The short videos are to give use a glimpse of what we should expect in the full video, think of them like movie trailers... they should show the best bits of your video, even if it doesn't make a coherent story. At all points the full version of the video is available to watch; but we don't require it to be watched until the final stages of judging.

I have a question regarding the final delivery for the video entry. ( I know this has in part been addressed earlier...but some further clarification would be helpful)
The official directions say that you will initially judge a 30sec cut of our piece. How does this work? Do you look at the 30sec pieces and then if you like them enough you e-mail us about sending you our full length edits? Or do we upload both the 30sec and the full-length versions at the end of the challenge regardless? (we essentially submit two finals?)
Also, regarding the making videos ... Do you let us know if we are being considered first... and THEN we send you a making of video. It would seem like a ton of work to make a making of video only to not be in the running for anything. (Plus I wouldn't know what category the making-of should address)
Thanks a lot,
-charles

Go read the "Deliverables" page, where they say what to turn in, and how:

Also.. the making of video... In the rules it seems to say " please remember to add a making of video for the skills awards you wish to be considered for." Does this mean you need to specify what skill category you're vying for or will you be considered for any category the judges feel applicable?

Hey admins,
Question about video submission:
I know the final submission goes trailer-->making-of-->final video (in 1 consecutive file), however...in Lemog's thread some questions have been brought up based on a bit of vague wording in the "Categories" page.
On the Categories page, it alludes to the idea that the "making-of" video is not mandatory (just "encouraged") and that it should include no narration. The quote is here, as a footnote on that page:
Video entries (whether team or individual) wishing to be considered for an award(s) are encouraged to show off the skill(s) in a silent (no dialogue background music is OK) making of documentary immediately after their closing credits. There is a maximum of 90 seconds allowed for this in addition to the Video.
Now...I previously understood the making-of section to be mandatory, and also thought that narration is allowed (since my piece last year included narration and nobody alerted me that it was against the rules). So is that an accurate note on the Categories page? Because it seems to contradict information elsewhere. Some clarification on exactly what constitutes the making-of video, and whether or not narration is allowed would be most helpful :)

...talking about "making of" videos? I am almost sure I will not have a single second to make it. In past there was an option to have it as video footage or just the same way as image category, regular wips we are submitting during the challenge. I believe this is still optional and judges will have access to our wip pages...

Does anyone know what we are and are not allowed to do with these images before the judging is over? That is, could I post a copy of my piece on my website or my deviantART page, or would that be against the contest rules?
I don't know. I saw some entrants works on different sites. As long as you credit CGTalk, I don't think there'd be a problem. But, I'm not completely sure.
And I'm with tuminski. We really would love to see juries choices. But I'm sure it's not an easy task to handle as long as there are so many entries.
Good luck to everyone.

My mistake, I didn't mean that you asked any judges or administrator. I did not ask, too. On the other hand anyone may, there is nothing wrong with it.
I saw nobody answered you, so I thought if I support you, we both may have an answer. I'm new around here, too.
And look, someone heard:)
Thank you Jack, you must be so busy and you replied. Your interest means much to me. Even I'm an entrant too, your image is one of my favourites. Best.
Sometimes, some questions may be forgotten because of instant different posts. But answer will come sooner or later.

no problem you two, glad to help.
yah. 7 days is kinda unrealistic. don't try to kill warlus here. hehe
Start: 10 November 2008 End: 04 February 2009 Accepting Entries: Yes Challengers: 1959 Entries: 9268
i don't fully understand why there's 9k entries. perhaps the group teams has one entry per team member. but that's not important.
let's say there are 2k challengers and each one of them makes 1 work. that's 2k works. usually half of the participant can finish on time, so that means 1k work for the judges.
we got 12 judges this time so that makes about 100 entries for each of them to deal with. as you know they all have job in the day so i guess if they go over 4 pieces per day that's pretty thankful already. 100 piece for 1 judge who finish 4 entries per day that makes a 25 days, that's close to a month. i'm sure there will be discussion of which one is better than the other for the final top 10 entries so there's time for discussion to. that's pretty much a month. then the sponsors and publish probably have to prepare for shipping the price and write article about the result announcing. So I assume that average of a month and half is pretty rereasonable.
obviously the judging doesn't run like what i mentioned. i was just doing a quick math to get some logics out of it.
ivanisavich
01-31-2009, 05:07 PM
Well, judging by the number of people who actually finished, I'm assuming there's probably around 100 image entries. MAYBE 200...but that's pushing it. I watched a good number of the threads, and only saw around 30 that were regularly updated. So unless there is an underground army of artists somewhere who didn't regularly update their WIP threads, there's no way there's >9000 finished entries :)
Anyways, is there any admins out there who can answer my previous question?

i have 2 questions about the final entry for the video.
the cg-uploader help say : "Keep in mind you are allowed only 50 megs of video files when you are encoding video".
My entry will be about 4mn for the final video + 40 secondes for the teaser + 1.30mn for the making of, that make 6.10mn for the video .
The result is very crappy if the final size of the video is limited to 50meg.
- is it possible to separate the files ? :
video 1 (teaser+making of)
video 2 (final video).
- is it allowed to post a link of the final video in a better quality format ( pal or hd ) on vimeo, blip or on one of my server ?
people who are working on a "long" video will be penalised by the quality of the compression, due to the file limitation.
thank you

Hey.
I've tried many times today and yesterday to upload my final film, but it just stops after 100% and gives me no "Upload OK" message.
I use the same ChallengeUploader as I've used throughout this project, that what I should use, right?
The FLV is 14mb and the image I upload with it is 120kb
I tried to upload it both as "Final video" and "Wip" but both with negative results.
Like I said, it just stops at 100%.
I feel like a idiot, cause it has worked the entire time during this challenge.
Could use a little assistance before deadline runs out :)

I can't say for sure, but I imagine the "entries" is the value for all images submitted during the course of the challenge, from WIP to final.
usually half of the participant can finish on time, so that means 1k work for the judges.
That's an optimistic guess. I think far fewer than half the challengers end up submitting a final piece.

Hey I propably already know the answer to this. But i gotta jsut try...
Our main film is 34 seconds long.
So our deliverable will look like this:
30 seconds trailer (which does not do the main film any justice) (excluding credits that is)
90 seconds making of
34 seconds main film
:banghead:
I sincerely think there should be a "but" in the deliverable rule. So "IF" your main film is ca. 30 seconds long, you can skip the "cutdown".
best regards Andreas NG

I think you could work around that without too much of a problem, andreas, for example..many trailers have extensive "titles" with text and such, combined with a mock "this preview has been approved for all audiences" screen, you could probably get away with having only about 15-20 seconds of animation in the trailer, with 10-15 seconds of titles. :)

The 50 meg limit only applies to portfolio - video entries are not subject to this.
You may link to higher quality versions, although you will be judged from the flash version.

You can post your images anywhere you want. They are, after all, your images.
Let me clarify with some copy-pasta from the rules:
# The winners grant Ballistic Media first right to publish their submitted work in any media.
# Entrants should notify Ballistic Media in writing at least one week prior to the publication of their work in any media.
# Other than the rights assigned in the preceding clauses entrants retain copyright of all entered materials and are free to use said materials for personal promotions.
Essentially, what we mean by this, is you can post your work anywhere on the Internet (in fact, we encourage you to, especially if you link back here). However, we request that before you have your work published (physical media, such as paper, or CD) we ask that you let us know before hand - so that we may have first dibs on it.

Question about video submission:

Strictly speaking, it is mandatory, I don't know anything about "no voice", and would personally not disqualify you for giving us MORE than we asked for. I think when it says "no voice" it really means we don't require it.
However, if someone submits a killer video, without all the bits, we're usually pretty lenient, it'll just be docked points if we come to "i wonder how they did that" and get no answer.
If you want maximum chance of winning something, do the making of, the idea of the challenges is to learn, and help others learn, I do the nominations for sub-categories, and use the making of threads and videos to get some insight into how you went about things.

There is one nice exception to copyright, and this in the use of copyrighted material for use in sarcastic or ironical use. It still remains a discussion towards what a person can do with something it bought.
Imagine the writers suing people for wiping their asses with copyrighted pages of literature because they declared you can only read something you payed money for.
So there is also a difference between the use of material in a commercial of non-commercial piece of work.
To make it even more messed up, i could declare me an artist and my video a piece of art. Different rulez to the game!
I can imagine you stressing out answering these questions

This isn't the first time you've tried running the uploader is it ? We usually recommend that people try to work this stuff out ahead of time so there isn't a big rush at the end.
When it reaches 100%, leave it for a bit longer. Don't close it right away because it still has stuff to process.

Java version shouldn't matter - if it isn't going to work, java will tell you about it.
There is a version back-compiled for Macs as they can't seem to use the latest Java - you can try that.
If you have troubles, break your video into 3 parts (final, making of, trailer) and upload them in THAT ORDER. This will show the trailer to judges for the first rount of judging.

Juraj: what kind of bug is it? Maybe if you're more specific we can help you out.
You mentioned strange noises...is it something to do with the audio compression causing distortion in your audio track? I had a problem in my short last night, where the uncompressed audio sounded great, but the compression version in the .flv was very distorted in some places. Turns out that one of my sound effects being used was of a high frequency (it was the sound of metal scraping), and the compression (which re-sampled the audio track) wasn't able to interpret it properly, so instead of a high-pitched "shhhhing" sound, it was garbled and distorted. Just switching those sounds in my audio comp with ones of a lower frequency fixed the probblem.
Salmon: I got it working mate :) Well, not on this machine...but I logged onto another box and have been able to upload from there.

Thanks for your care Tyson. It is animation unfortunately. Some noise operators left their values on the position what should stay 0... With that value my meshes are diving to each other where they should just touch. Big bad is, it wasnt on the preview it just popped out closely before rendering somehow... Well, this Bathory girl... she doesnīt want to leave my machine I guess
