View Full Version : Judo Throw: Kata Guruma (please critique)
Jiayong 11-05-2008, 04:40 PM Hi everyone, here's my first post. This is a poster I did for my Judo coach. Used Corel Painter acrylics mainly followed by the smudge effect. The background's a bit plain cos I haven't thought of what to draw yet. Feel free to critique and give ideas :) Thanks.

The blur distorts the anatomy of the feet something awful.
The feet essentially ruin the rest of the image for me.
The sideways post doesn't help, and it looks like the guy in white is copping a grope on the blue guy's ass...
I don't recall judo thows incorporating grabbing the hair, but if someone grabbed my ass like that, I'd probably be clutching a chunk of scalp myself...
The foundation drawing is not bad, but the digital work is pretty rough.
Helpful hint...The Smudge Tool is ONLY meant for SLIGHT blending effects, not to smudge an image into a blob...

Thanks for the feedback! I'll tone down the smudging so that the anatomy is more visible. The reason for the smudge was because I wanted to give the throw a sense of speed and intensity, but guess I might have overdid it.
As for the technicalities of the throw, think I'll explain a bit more. The guy in white is the one throwing. He's not grabbing the blue guy's ass or his own hair. In fact his left hand is actually grabbing the blue guy's lapel (which is the extended collar of the judo gi), while his right hand goes to the inner thigh portion of the blue guy's slacks (pants). The throw is also nicknamed "fireman's lift". After breaking the blue guy's balance and having the blue guy's weight on the white guy's shoulders, the white guy lifts him up and throws him in the other direction (sideways). It's a very strong throw that can be well-combo-ed with other throws. Basically you can fake a back throw, then combo it into the kata guruma.
Explaining with words can get a bit hard, so here're some youtube videos to give a better picture:

Gah!
I hate it when the ref. images prove me more right...
Okay. Take no prisoners critique time. You are making bad excuses for your image, which is even worse than just making excuses....As for the technicalities of the throw...
Okay. First, let's correctly orient this picture to show the bad positioning...

You should be able to plainly see that gravity, and the picture plane (even though you tried hard to ignore both) show that either these two guys are wrestling on the ground, or the guy in white is flying sideways, with his right leg out in a foreward high kick. There is NO way you are conveying ANY of the balance and shifting of the center of gravity that the entire sport of Judo is based upon. None. This alone puts the proverbial bullet in the head of this piece as you have described it.
Now, lets' discuss your excuses about that pose...
The Ass Grab ~ LOOK at the fabric lines on the pants. See the circular pattern they are making around his hand? That is because the fabric is attached to the waistband. Now, notice WHERE his hand is, and how much of it is visible...
NOW, let's check out some photographs of the Kata Guruma being correctly applied...

You will see that the hand on the leg is not upper thigh, it is generally just above the knee...
For the one guy who IS grabbing the upper thigh, see how his hand is on the OUTSIDE, nowhere NEAR the ass??? (He's also down on his knees, no high kicks for HIM!)

And YES, it DOES look like he's grabbing his hair. This is because of where you placed that hand...If that is a lapel, I would hate to meet the guy's tailor, that gi is very poorly designed...
Is this imaginary, or are you basing this off of a ref. image? Post the ref if you are. You have some mightly wonky anatomy all around on this.
If it IS imaginary, I strongly suggest you use this as a Comp Rough, and start over. Drawing on a "level" ground plane, and THEN rotating it to some funky perspective AFTER you get the anatomy and the pose correct...

haha alright i'll take that in good stride! points accepted :) i guess i'll put this piece aside and start over. takes more effort to correct a piece compared to starting over. thanks for the feedback! appreciate it :)
