Hi

I enjoy working with maya's subds a lot but some serious issues have appeared. I came to a halt when I found that I couldn't copy/attach half the mesh and it's uvs. What's the general workflow for uving subds?

Do most people model in subds, and then convert to polys and leave it at that? Or reconvert to subds again, with like a 7000 poly base mesh?

really dying to know....

yeesh, ok first off do this

you cant mirror you model? convert it back to polys using the...vertices method. then mirror and combine booom bam.

i belive they would model in polygons, and check out there model as a sub division and then back to polygon. that way they can still work fast, but they are just checking everynow and then . thats what i do , i figure that makes sense.

I forgot to mention that I'm using the heirarchy ... so I guess converting to polys to uv map is a one time thing, which is fine. I'm more worried about dense subd surfaces. Is 7000 faces dense for a realistic subd animal, specifically a scorpion?

you should post a wire frame shaded viwe of it at its polygon base after you convert from sub>poly then i would tell you my opinion of it.

model in poly, convert to subD for testing the model. convert the subD back to poly (don't use adaptive conversion, use it based on vertices so you get your low poly base mesh) duplicate and mirror the head in low poly cage and lay out the uv's. convert the head back to subD but keep the original low poly mesh to use for basic rigging and hide the subD model till you get down to weighting or deformers and animate the low mesh as much as you can... subD's are still slow in maya so i normally tweak at subD level and rough in everything with the low base mesh.... at least thats how i go about it. i'm sure theres much better ways

Levitateme - the 7000 subd surface won't render on my machine. Out of memory error. I think I'm just going to convert to poly and leave it as is.

Since I model in subds directly I can't really switch back and forth.

Maybe someone could make a script that snaps a mass of uvs to a set of laid out uvs. This way someone could duplicate half of their subd layout.
