The Blue Buffoon! Nice choice of character, but as Eman says, can't really say anything so far because its not developed enough yet. The basics are looking okay so far, just needs more definition and detail.

thanks for the encouragement! I plan on posting more often than usual with this project (usually once at start and once at finish), so everyone can see how he develops.

should have more tonight.

I started working on head and hands today. I think the hands are a good start but the head I don't like so far. By the way, this will end up between 2 and 3000 tris, and will be textured, rigged and animated too.

i would bulk up his forearms a bit more. and maybe push his chest out a bit to make him more superhero like.

Thanks for the comments, I have been trying to get more definition out of the forearms, and I noticed last night that the brow is not there at all.

Anyone know how I could possibly get the dynamics of his face? In the books and in the cartoon his mouth and eyes change shape and size constantly. kinda worried he'll be too boring with animation...

Got some more updates...

Luckily the tick doesn't carry too much detail.:p Maybe a bit less blue? It's too radiant...

hold up hold up, first i woudl stop uv mapping and re look you reference for the tick, he is a freeking huge muscle head, and a very cool one, i thin when i looked at the profile of him you have his torso and chest and a few things to small, he needs to be bulked up a little more. at least to me it seems like that. also i htink the ticks upper boddy is way huge compared ot his lower not by much but t is bigger and you ave it smaller, maybe pll his back muscles out as well. but i would re look some things and maybe find some good reference for thew side or just look at some body builders. peace ihope this helped and keep it up dude.

many moons later, I come to post again...

I reworked this model some to use in a compositing project, so I figure I'll just use this thread for the new work too. here is a much HIGHER poly version:

I am gonna be doing some spins with some wires and blah....blah.... and if I have time I'm gonna put him into some DV footage, or stills.

Comments and Critiques always welcome!

The mesh looks pretty solid thus far. Although I must admit, I never understood the appeal of the Tick. ;)

the tick is the anti-superhero superhero. he is exactly what a superhero isn't. and often, he directly cracks on the other superheros ( who are all the same damn story...)

but i guess it's just transformers for you? just playin...

Hey, I remember this thread!
Yep, he's come along a bit since I last saw him. I'm not entirely sure about the teeth though. For me, the architypal Tick look had him with this great big cheesy grin on his face. I think the leg muscles could be better defined too.
Nice progress though.

the problem with the face (specifically the mouth) is that in comics, and 2d cartoons, things can change as much as you want, whereas in 3d things are what they are. His mouth needed to be able to drastically change size, so I tried to model him in a half-way pose but it didn't work too well. If I get time, I'll redo it.

legs and back both need LOTS of definition, just need to get to it.

thanks!

I know lots of people who love the Tick, I just don't happen to be one of them. I do however find your model an interesting choice, which is why I posted. For me, yeah in terms of 3D I stick mainly to Transformers...I'm not really all that skilled when it comes to organic stuff. :)

got some work done on the compositing project. so far it's REALLY simple, I kinda like it simple... (not *only* because it's easy)

I think I'm gonna put scans of the old comic covers in the background, sliding left to right or something; and I still need to do transitions for the face stills.

but here it is(zipped quicktime file):

any comments on timing, transitions or anything else?

zachgrachan

I think this thing is about done, finishing up the transitions now (stupid 5am labs). Can't upload from here, but when I get home I will.

spoon! i'd say a little less blue, and force some shadows in with your texture map, to fake a bit of lighting.

zachgrachan

less blue than which pic? I've gone through about a zillion blues...kind of difficult when they won't keep him steady (referring to the comics, and also the cartoon was an entirely new shade). I did de-saturate the animation some- the white wireframe on top of the blue shaded was sorta painful.

Most of the textures are just colored lambert shaders, only worked out an actual map for the low-res model - and a crappy one at that. Next month I may get a chance to texture the higher-res model....but I really don't like doing it, so maybe not...

hey all,

got the compositing project turned in. pretty happy with how it turned out, of course with more time it would get better - but art never is really done; just abandoned.

here ya go(sorry about the zip files - no space left on my server):

http://www.zgrachan.com/tickReel.zip

any crits or comments could still go in, just not for the class.
