View Full Version : 3D Animation and 3:2 Pulldown

Hi,
Hope someone can give me some help.
I'm having problems coming up with the best solution for this problem.

I'm wanting to create 3D animations at 720x480 and at 24fps (no fields and less rendering)and output it in After Effects to 29.97 video resolution (720x480).

Here's what works: I created a 3D ball in 3D Studio Max and animated it around on the screen over black with fields and rendered it out at 30fps and it turns out perfect. Meaning the motion and antialiasing looks great!

The problem is that when we do this at 24fps with no fields and use the same output settings and do the 3:2 pulldown, the motion doesn't look smooth like the scenerio above and the antialiasing looks jaggy around the edges of the ball. I've used all 3:2 pulldown choices and they all don't look good.

Also, I rendered the animation out at 720x480 at 60fps and output this in AE with fields at 30fps (using the 60 frames to create the fields) and this even doesn't look as good as the scenerio up above.

I understand that frames are having to be created by doing the 3:2 pulldown but is there something that I'm missing or does everyone just accept this?

With the ball over black, you can really see the differences.

Any help will be great.

Ugh. My suggestion would be don't do it, but if you must, you need to slow the 24fps footage down in After Effects 0.1% to 23.976fps before applying the 3:2 pulldown. This keeps a 4to5 ratio between the old and new speed (24 and 29.97 has a pretty complicated ratio). Try that first, and make sure not to use "repeat fourth frame" ever. Put the resulting footage in a new comp set at 29.97fps.

does it look jaggy on your computer screen or on the television? If it looks that way on your computer, thats because your playing an interlaced material on a progressive source. If its that way on your tv screen, then maybe you have your field order wrong?

Try this:

Import your footage rendered at 24 fps withotu fields
1. Put into 23.976 comp
2. put into render que
3. click Render Settings
4. choose "lower first"
5. choose a pulldown phase.

notice now that frame says: Use this framerate 29.97, sampling @ 23.976


However if you have severe horizontal motion you will not have the same super smooth motion as render 30fps with fields. To combat this you should use motionblur as it had been shot on film unless they were using a really fast shutter speed and strobes (Think of the motion in the beginning of saving private ryan) then the motion would be blurred.

Rendering at 24FPS in progressive (frame mode) is perfectly acceptable however you need to use motion blur to pull it off correctly. Re-render with motion blur and then convert it to 30 FPS, the results will be much smoother but still not perfect. Perfect would be rendering at 30FPS with motion blur.

Now, here is the sticky part with rendering at 24 and converting to 30FPS. Somehow you need to create in-between frames to go from 24 to 30 FPS. If you do a 3:2 pull down then the in-between frames are just copies or interoplated copies (two frames combined). Most TV animated series use 3:2 pull down that copies frames. It looks ok and is not that noticible to someone not looking for it.

If you use a program like Twixtor or Retimer then the in-between frames get created and the results are smoother and closer to being perfect.

I have tried Twixtor and have found that it's not the best for CG. Most of the time the created frames are warped. This is with version 2 of the plugin. I use DF4 but it's the same for AE.
