Thanks for your suggestions, Jeremy. I worked on lighting the set.
This rendered in 3 minutes 27 seconds on my Quad Core Q6700 2.66GHz. I used Blender's internal renderer and compositor. The textures were prepped in Photoshop. I got the skymap here (http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24038). Those maps are wonderful and worth looking into no matter what software you use.
Everyone is doing wonderfully. I can't wait to see what the next challenge is.
As always, feel free to give your opinion on my image.
Have a nice day.

Hello
Found this thread yesterday and thought it was a nice scene to light up. Had some trouble with the scale of the file and some flipped normals, so the textures are not looking too good. Nicely modeled scene though, and the dinosaurs are great :applause:Anyhow worked on this until max crashed. It was interesting, and I am looking forward to the next challenge to spend more time in it :)
Software used:
3ds Max 2009 x64
V-Ray 1.5
Photoshop (for a slight contrast adjustment, dirt pass mix and a mild light glow)
Only source of illumination is the VRaySun & Sky, except in the last image that there is a light behind the camera.

reygerali - In general, in places where you can see the sun, the area of the sky around the sun is also the brightest part of the sky. Even in a scene that's just lit through windows, you expect the fill light from the sky to be much brighter in the general direction of the sunbeam, and less fill light in the opposite direction. Some of you sunbeams, especially the one on the lower right side, look like orphans, without the bright fill light around them. The soft fill light from the sky seems too concentrated near the windows, and should extend more onto the right wall of the set (but less on the left wall.) The dinosaurs could use a little more fill light from the top.
BlenderFan - I don't see much (any?) lighting on the set, except for a very dull blue glow. Try to get variety into the set, such as light coming from a particular light source or direction.
visua - Nice work. The floor looks very flat and uniformly lit. The walls could probably also use a little darker occlusion and less fill light in places.
MnietekPi - Welcome! That's a nice scene! I think the dino should have a different shader from the stand, maybe with less displacement. The glass could use a little more reflection or highlights to make it visible.
SahaneNik - Welcome! I don't really see the occlusion working. I think the occlusion pass needs a bigger max distance. Make sure your ambient pass and all your bounce lights are multiplied by the occlusion pass. The bounce light is pretty good, you need some bounce light on the base of the columns in the lower left, just above the sunbeam on the lower left floor. Is the light from your sunbeam casting a shadow of the geometry? It almost looks as if it isn't in some places. The dinosaurs themselves could get a little more light, especially from above.
wasimattar - Nice. The t-rex is showing up pretty well now. The other dino needs some light on it. The walls, especially the walls on the right, are looking a little flat, and could use more shadowing or occlusion between the columns and in the cracks.

Thanks again for the comments Jeremy.
I agree, the lower teeth were blending into the background and needed to read better. They are a different material than the skeleton body. I wanted them to read differently than the main skeleton material, so they would stand out on the underside of the mouth. I played with it a little, just to make the lower teeth stand out a little more from the background.
Thanks again for all the input. This challenge has been fun. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Thanks a lot Jeremy for your critique. Here's the scene with all the changes as you have suggested...I changed the camera perspective and narrowed the angle of the lens to minimize barrel distortion...this is sort a compromise to achieve the closest possible position the camera can get to the dinosaurs and at the same time retaining as much of the foreground elements within the scene.

reygerali - Nice job! Judging from the sunbeam direction, it seems as if the light from the sky should be brighter on the right than the left, maybe that could be switched and there could be more contrast in the set as a whole. The people work pretty well, but look like they need a little retouching, especially with the matte line around the photographer guy. The glass around the displays could use more reflections or highlights or refraction, near the center there's a vertical line (near the woman's purse and door reflection) that doesn't look very glass-like yet.
visua - Nice job! I wonder if there could be more sunlight on the t-rex? The set looks a little too uniform in places. Look at the corner behind the t-rex's nose: the two walls are facing different directions, but the color and tone stays the same, with very little definition and no real occlusion that I can see. Some of the spot
KayPoprawe - Great work! That's a terrific scene. The t-rex himself looks good and well defined, and the glowing green sign thing makes a nice center of interest. If you're doing another pass, the glass around the t-rex display is a little thin-looking (some reflections or refraction might help there), and a little specular kick or something might help make the dino on the left read better and look less matte-finished.
zero08 - Great work! Congratulations! If you want feedback, the reflections on the floor don't always seem to match the brightness of what's being reflected. It seems as if this might be a trace-depth issue, with a raytraced shadow not having a high enough ray depth to appear in reflections.
wasimattar - Looks good! Maybe the dino on the left could read better if he had more shaping, but the t-rex is well defined. I like the composition of the right one.
ahkiat - Looks good! I wonder if you could get more clear lighting on the dinosaurs?
lolofedo - Great job!
Kunotaku - Looking good! I wonder if you could get more light on the left dino's head, coming from above?
destijlart - Great job!
f3rd5 - That's awsome! BTW, I'd like to clarify my previous comment about "barrel distortion" - barrel distortion is a kind of curvature (so straight lines in the model would appear curved in the image) that often accompanies wide-angle lenses. You don't get it in computer graphics (except with specially programmed lens shaders, or faking it by warping the image in a compositing program.) When you had an image with a very wide field of view, but no barrel distortion so all the straight lines remained straight, I was mentioning that you could simulate some barrel distortion (add fake lens warping) to make the wide-angle shot more realistic. I don't think your new rendering needs this, I just wanted to explain my thinking better.
ajju4i - Try for something between those two: dim blue light on the set, blue light hitting the top of the dino, warm light on the bottom of the dino...
Nehak - Nice image! I assume the anti-aliasing is set to low quality because it's still a test. The reflections on the floor don't seem to reflect all of the light in the scene, only some of it, if that's possible. The glass around the t-rex needs a few more highlights or something to become visible. You might add some top-down fill light on the t-rex as well, to make sure he's lit by the light from the skylight.
Nelly68 - Nice start! I think the dinos could use a little more top-down light to help define their shape. The back wall looks more blue than the other walls, it's hard to tell if that's the light color or if there are different colored bricks there, but I think color continuity between the walls could tie it together better.
BlenderFan - Nice job! We've seen your work get better and better.
Steel GER - Welcome! Good start, keep going!
steelmonkey44 - Nice job, nice perspective!
ScallyFox - See you soon, then!

Hi all, im really late, but let's see how far I can go.
I started to work two days ago, so i alrready have some images to show the progres.
This is the first aproximation, i was looking for a good camera angle.
2min 44sec, mental ray, FG, phisical sun and sky / Maya 2009
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp27/andriusgabriunas/Render1-2m44scopia.jpg
I tweak the camera a the light direction a little and start to using some mentalray plane shaders, i tryed with more FG rays to get a better aproximation
15m 21s
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp27/andriusgabriunas/Render2-15m21scopia.jpg
I started to place some area lights with portal light nodes and also rotate the dinos a little bit. the render time increase a lot because of the portal lights.
6h 28 min
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp27/andriusgabriunas/Render3-6h28mcopia.jpg
The same as last one, but even more area lights/portal lights and more render time
9hours 16min (I let the render all night so I abuse a little on quality settings :D )
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp27/andriusgabriunas/Render4-9h16mcopia.jpg
I finally placed all the portal lights i need (48) and applyed some textures as well as tweaked the FG and light shape settings to get better render times without loosing to much quality.
6hours 41 min - FG only

I appreciate any C&C.

Hi, Happy new year to everyone. This is my last version for this challenge. It is made with blender. I have used its internal renderer and compositor, for the DOF and lens distortion effects. There is also a bit of grain in the image. The lighting itself is basically AO with spot lights. Texturing and shading are very simple UV mapping and some procedurals for the skeleton of the dino. I hope you like it.

JBrant - Nice image! That woman looks really evil, like she's commanding the t-rex. The stripes of light on the stairs don't seem to be shadowing correctly, as if the stairs themselves don't cast a shadow.
visua - Great job! The dinos and the architecture are looking good. The glass is looking good in the display case. The glass around the dinos is lacking definition in some areas, could use some highlights and reflections. I wonder if the amount of light in some of those right alcoves could be brought down to half as much, to let the sunlit areas really look a lot brighter, and to help avoid the abrupt transition from lit to black in the corner above the right dino's head. There are no spots
KayPoprawe - Nice job! Stylized, but effective.
casagan - Great job! The dino reads well, good dark-on-dark definition. I'd be tempted to put some more lighting on the t-rex's lower jaw and teeth, just to keep it defined in the center. Maybe the parts of the architecture that are lit from below in the upper frame look a bit like the light isn't shadowing from the set as it should, and that could use more directional shadows and better contact with the vertical surfaces. Really nice work on the texture of the dino, too!
wellsichris - Nice job! The day scene is great, I just wish more of the sun and sky light hit the dinos. For the night scene, it would be better if the blue light travelled farther into the set to mix with the warm light, and there were more contrast defining the dinos.
Nelly68 - Looks good! The color balance of light on the dinos doesn't really look like the colors of light surrounding them. Maybe some of the red on the set is too intense, too. I think the dinos could use a little more light and definintion, even if the color isn't as blue/purple.
tempus - Welcome! That's a good start. I think by the 2nd to last one you're off to a good start on the set lighting. Texturing it killed some of the blue shading, I hope you can get that back. Try to make the columns on the left (closest to camera) darker for some contrast, and do some lighting work on the dinosaurs so they read clearly.
shivanande - Welcome! Strong start on the texturing, and I like the look of straight-forward ligthing on the dinosaurs. The set seems to have some lights that aren't casting shadows, which really hurts it. The glass and floor could use some reflections.
wasimattar - nice job. The dino on the right looks good, the one of the left is a little muddy. The red carpet is a nice addition to the scene.
ahkiat - Nice job.
destijlart - Great work!
infectedbo - Nice job! The back window area is the best part. I like the color mixing there. Around the two doors, I wish the blue light bled in more softly and lit more of the floor and area around the doors. The right dino is subtly lit but reads well, the dino on the left could use a little kick of extra light on his head.

Ok, here is my final.
Rendered in Blender using an in development feature called Lightcuts to get some GI. I was also very careful to get correct Exposure concepts. This is a very "manual" thing to set in Blender, but if done correctly, everything looks quite nice.
The main idea was also to emulate the look of an anamorphic camera.

Hello,
I hope I got this in before the deadline. So I didn't do any textures or maps or anything, just lights and a few material tweaks, all in blender. I wrote out 32 bits/channel so I could tweak the gamma, but basically that's all I did after the render. I would love to get any comments/criticisms as I'm really new to this. Thanks!

Used Cinema 4D, version 10.1. No GI, AO set to a low accuracy, experimented with sub- polygon displacement on the closer areas of the stone walls and some of the dino bone- that slowed down my render time to around two hours.
Thanks for the challenge and thoughts.

Hey guys, this is my first post here, I just realised that the deadline was today, I was very busy so I was unable to post this earlier. This scene nearly crashed on my computer because I did'nt had a powerhouse.
Did this with only spotlights, 3 minutes to render. Maya 2008. Took about a day to do everything, so I can't say this is very refined.
Edit: Woops sorry I uploaded the wrong link... just fixed it :D

punytjoshi - Interesting image. Some of the textures need work, looks like too deep a bump map in places, and some of the geometry appears to be floating, but you do get the idea across.
dpendzich - Nice job! I don't know what the white thing is at the far end of the windows, it looks bright enough that there could be more light from there onto the rest of the scene. The dinos look a little flat and plastic.
texere - Good job. Maybe all the seams in the glass don't need that bright a highlight. Some more shaping on the dino would help, especially if the third of his head were brighter than the bottom of the chin. There could be more soft illumination coming from the same direction as those sunbeams, too.
Eastwood - Really good! I recognize some of those signs from things on the museum's website, makes it look authentic.
AnthonyC - Nice job! Shame about that seam on the back staircase.
jczet4 - Good job. If the sunbeams were that bright, I'd expect more spill around them and bounce from them, though.
vgabex - Beautiful image in places. Those people don't look realistic. Most of the architecture looks good, except it's a bit flat in places. Look at the area straight above the hip of the t-rex. You look through the archway, and the walls and ceiling you see all have very similar tones, that doesn't seem as well defined as it could be, especially if the side hallway has differently colored windows. Nice textures on the ceiling.
visua - Nice job! On the last one, that area above the head of the right dino seems to go very quickly into blackness, which stands-out in a set that's otherwise mostly fairly uniform in tone. Some areas, like the edges of the sunbeams, looks really realistic. Your image in post 556 is excellent. The next one looks kindof washed-out and lacking in contrast and interest to me.
dcbeatty - Good job overall. The view through the window doesn't look like a convincing perspective match, especially with the verticals of the buildings not matching the vertical lines in the set. Double-check that all your lights are casting shadows well. The dinos look as if they might not be casting shadows in the lights that illuminate them, which is strange because I see an extremely dark shadow of the t-rex on the wall.
bboycafard - Welcome! That's an interesting image!
benjaminbattais - Welcome! That's a nice scene. It looks a little washed-out to me, I wish the foreground got a little darker, so only the more distant parts lost contrast. The composition seems to use the lower half of the image for empty floor, maybe it could be framed more tightly around an area of interest?
tempus - I think imageshack.us lets you post high-res images. So does flickr.com A lot of surfaces look very flat-shaded in your images, it's better to have variety, gradients, occlusion, something other than large areas with the same tone.
earwax - Welcome! That's a good start.
Nelly68 - Nice job!
casagan - Nice job! I think the composition and lighting leads people to focus too much on the upper part of the frame. Maybe darkening down the upper part of the set, and also tilting the camera down a bit, could make a stronger image. You might even use a more wide-screen aspect ratio to capture the dino, with a little more space in front of his head, and get rid of the top part.
tuqueque - Very nice job! But, BUT, 43 HOURS to render that??? That's insane. If images were taking that long, I'd re-think my approaches so that I could turn-around changes and tests a little faster.
Kunotaku - Nice job!
Shordy - Nice job! Those people pop-out from the scene with their higher contrast, but overall it's a great scene.
sampad - Welcome! That's a good start.
chithradr - Nice job!
reygerali - Nice job!
ajju4i - Nice job!
