Are all 3d packages like Maya and have non-transferable licenses? One of my father's workers was going to give him a legal copy of maya to give to me. I went to Alias' site to see how much upgrading it would be as I assumed it wouldn't be close to the newest version. They told me the licenses weren't transferable and so I'm kinda bummed. Basically you buy it and you die with your copy, taking it to your grave huh?

Discreet is the same way with 3dsmax.

If the version your father's friend owns has a dongle then you can still use it on your computer.

true, but i mean, what would be the point? If it wouldn't be "legal" even though he gave it to me whole kit and kaboodle then it is just essentially like having the hack version.

I was assuming it was kinda like a car, that you had a license for it and you could switch it by giving away your license and such for it. *shrugs* I could see why they wouldn't wanna do it if they didn't have something like this in place, but without it just seems a bit odd to me. But what do I know, I'm new to the biz...heck I'm theoretically not even in the biz yet.

I know one of my professors in college got Softimage XSI that way as the company he was working for didn't wanna keep the seat anymore so they let him have it and he just had to keep the year upkeep price/whatever on it. *shrugs*

I bet if you called alias and asked to transfer the liscense they would do it. Whenever we change license servesr here we have to call alias to give them the new MAC address. Then they send us back a new key and everthing is fine.

I think what they mean by non-tranferable is that, maya licenses are locked to a specific network card, so you can't just switch computer's anytime you want.

maybe, and that would be nice as I'd like to have a up to date and legal copy of maya for when I start doing freelancing. At any rate, it does bear a call to Alias and see what they say.

Nope. A/w is very firm on their stance on this issue unless the company that owns the licenses is bought up by another company. Their license says that the software cannot be resold in any way to another company or individual. You buy it, you own it for life.
