(a b/w map that is used as the blender in a color blend node)

your question is close to "how does 3D work"..

Well, the other masks (animation, rendering, components...) are selection masks, meaning it will give priority to selecting these entities.
Probably the most usefual are the object/component mask found under the Status Bar.
