Hi all,
I have been using AE for about 6 months now. I do like the program, and the tutorials at www.videocopilot.net (http://www.videocopilot.net) are invaluable. Andrew Kramer for Prez!

My question is based on the fact that I work with alot of MAC guys and gals (I'm still PC) and they rave about Motion 3. I checked out the website and it does look very interesting but there is no way to try it. Anyone use both and have opinions about it. It would be nice if it didn't come bundled with FCStudio as the price is about $1200.

Just looking for a comparsion here not a war. When would Motion be a viable option vs. AE and vice-a-versa. I have googled this but most opnions seem to be from 2007.

Also, in checking out the Motion 3 website page I did not see a way to make shapes and gradient type backgrounds, etc.... Does this have to be done in Photoshop and then imported. I do alot of this stuff in AE (which says me from going into PS most times) and would hate to think you can't do this in Motion.

Thanks for the input,
Pesto

Guess it depends on what kind of work you do and whether you know AE or not. :-|

It would be nice if it didn't come bundled with FCStudio as the price is about $1200.

Then the whole point of the program would be lost. Basically it is still a title, background and effects generator for the other apps. As a standalone compositing/ motion graphics program it couldn't hold its liquor compared to AE.

vs. AE? Almost never. You can do everything you can do in Motion just the same in AE - you may just need a few more plugins. Just like the above, Motion is best seen as a complementary app to AE. A user on another forum once said "Motion is the best particle plugin for AE", and on some level that is true. Basically I and others only use it for stuff where the particles or the behavior engine come in handy or one may need some of the LiveType stuff, but not for complete projects. And don't be fooled by the alleged "realtimeness". Motion does everything on the graphics card and after only a few layers/ effects you loose that ability and still have to do RAM previews.

Also, in checking out the Motion 3 website page I did not see a way to make shapes and gradient type backgrounds, etc.... Does this have to be done in Photoshop and then imported.

Indeed most creative stuff has to be prepped externally and imported as images/ clips. There are some basic generator tools, but nowhere near as flexible as in AE.

Thanks Mylenium for the reply. Although I would love to play around with Motion, I can't see justifying the expense (even if I switch to MAC) for some extra effects. I could buy some plugins and it would be cheaper.

Thanks again

this is really true, i´ve never seen motion 3 working in real time, even in simple projects. And in my college it is run in a mac pro with 8 xeon cores and with a relatively good graphic card.
