hello,

i need to composite a maya object into a live action clip. I have an hdr image taken and also a 50% grey sphere photographed . However im not sure how to use them effectively in my scene. My project requires that i set up lights also, eg back, key and fill, but i wouldnt know where to put them (especially if your doing an outdoor scene-eg sunny day).

I have the hdr image imported as the image based lighting source, from the mental ray tab. But then there is an option to emit light from the image as well which confused me.

finally, global illumination/final gather, we are also encouraged to use these, but which lights should emit photons? the hdr image?.

so basically, is there a safe method to setting up lighting like this, using the above techniques, so that they all work well together. My task is to make the composite look photoreal. But at the moment, my model just look completely washed out by all the light sources.

any info on this would be appreciated,

sam

when using HDR's to light scenes I follow a linear workflow , that way I get more flexibility.

1 I use the HDR , which is split into a full res floating point tif for relections and a blurred low res tif for the lighting information. Use HDR shop to create this so you keep your lighting information. Rendering with MR I kill the occlusion in the FG.
2 Create an occlusion pass
3 A key light for shadows
4 Rim if needed / fill if needed

5 de gamma any texture maps on my cg objects
6 attach to the camera a mia exposure node with gamma set to 2.2
7 remember to de gamma any back plates so they are correct .

hope this help , it should be enought information for you to figure the rest
