View Full Version : Where to get chrome sphere / mirror sphere?
asomma 10-31-2008, 10:52 AM Hi
Im doing CG postproduction on a short that is to be shot in a month.
I've used chrome sphere for lighting reference before, but I've never found one I'm happy with.
Where do you get the "real stuff" if there is any?
I'm especially having troubles locating big ones. 30 cm diameter or so...

I just ordered one from here the other day.

They're a juggling supply company, but they have some chrome balls for sale on there.
This guy uses it, and it looks pretty good. - http://www.unparent.com/photos_probes.html

I use a 13 inch gazing ball and spray painted one half 50% gray with an oil based Kilz primer and stuck it on a wooden dowel.
It is the best tool for lighting reference and cost me 30 bucks to make.
I take it to every shoot I go to and always get a reference plate with weather I think I'll need it or not.
Also my standard practice is to make an hdri with it as well every 3 to 4 hours while on an out door shoot. I do this just to make sure I get a chronology of that days shoot, natural lighting information. (They did this in Pirates and transformers a lot.)

The one you've got seems like the perfect size, about 30 cm. I wanna replace the actor/prop with the sphere and film it with the actual filmcamera to get accurate reflections with the correct color. Taking photos of a small sphere with a digital reflex and zoom lens doesn't produce the same colors or contrast.
So where do I get one that big?
Azozel?
Anyone else?

I don't think they have a website...pretty regular/small gerdening store called la peppiniere here in belgium... I just did a quick research, you can find some nice gazing ball off ebay.

Most garden stores sell "viewing balls" which are reflective balls that you can use if you are on a budget.
