Frumpy Jowls of the Scalawags & the Fugitive are coming. Watch out for them.

http://www.virtuosobrothersstudios.com/frumpyjowlseyecloseup.jpg

TO begin with I would like to announce our entrance into this wonderful event. My Brother the other half of the Virtuoso Bros and I will be joined by a very speacial talent that most of you should know FIST.This should make for a very fun and interesting Collaboration.

To begin with I will go into the story and gameplay we have planned out . WARNING.............A short explanation for me is still long.I'll try and keep it as short as possible.

One of our two main characters is named Frumpy Jowls.......A Scalawag of the land known as L'Eternel...........A place that transcends all known size and depth.

The Scalawags are rogues, scoundrels, treasure seekers, adventurers, ale and rum lovers, fierce fighters, passionate lovers.....When they can find a willing partner, that is.;) Think of them as a cross,my version of pirates and crusty ol' Dwarves. They steal from the corrupt rich, they give half to the poor and needy, the other half they keep........I never said they were pure angels you know.

In this story we meet up with three of them,Frumpy Jowls,Jack Squat,& and his side kick Checkmate.

Frumpy Jowls is out to rescue his ol' mates. He travels to a vast Corel Fortress in a corel reef land with gigantic mesa's with formations that are as surreal as the eye can imagine.

Jack Squat's ol'gal a crusty ol' witch has turned Jack and his faithful companion Checkmate into Statues. The reason...............Love,strange & twisted love.Jack would have his way with his ol' gal the witch. But each and everytime he would than leave her alone for months at a time on grand adventures, until his path came by her old corel fortress again, and once again repeat the process.

Well the Witch had had enough. She decided to turn poor ol' Jack Squat and Checkmate into Statues, keeping them near her for all time to come. She did do Jack and Checkmate the courtesy of creating them in Bronze, such a sweetheart that she is.

They stand in front of the corel fortress as I type. In total contrast with the rugged corel and surrounding mesa's.The gleaming bronze beautiful as can be,but never to move a muscle again.

Well Frumpy Jowls has a plan...........rescue his old mates. He must travel into the far far away lands full of danger and capture the old witch and recover a potion to reverse the wicked spell. However she has joined with many dark souls led by a Evil force with power never before seen. This is where the story/game actually begins........................

As Frumpy Jowls gets set to depart on his wild task he encounters another being. Not far from the old Fortress a transport crash lands into a corel reef bed..............The land of L'Eternel is covered with portals/gateways to many far far off lands,as different as anyone could ever begin to imagine.

Frumpy Jowls encounters a alien being, the two could not be more different from one another. The contrast was unbelievable, this being was elegant, surreal almost, but had a great nobility to him,and seemed quite fierce.

Frumpy Jowls while being a fierce warrior himself was also quite the tinkerer,a great mind, gadgets, inventions were his true love. Without speaking Frumpy aided this strange being,he fixed his magnificent vessel.

This being was noble, and being so he now vowed to aid Frumpy on his magnificent Quest.

The being is known as the "FUGITIVE",no other name. The Fugitive comes from a planet of huge dimensions, with a number of
inhabitants that cannot be imagined. Because of the immense size of his
home-planet, and thus the much higher gravity, his natural musculature is
far superior to ours or any from Frump Jowls massive lands. He's not a fast runner, but has very fast reactions
and, despite his strength, his movements seem elegant & nimble.

His race relies on the same senses as we do, but they are sharpened to a
very high degree, "the fugitive" is always very aware of everything that is
happening around him. He has some special abilities that are hard to grasp,
his race has developed these due to the nature of their home planet. For
example, because there are thousands of different tribes, he has the ability
to understand any language very quickly.

Thus begins a very unusual partnership, each will have to rely on one another, and earn and gain respect, they will have to get over there differences, and use each others unique abilities.

.................................................................................

GAMEPLAY:..........The game will be played as a 3rd person action adventure, with 1st person options. There will be Flight battles, tactical land vehicle battles, melee and range weapons.RPG elements as well.Stealth too will have a very large part in this game,it's up to the gamer on how or why or where they go. Puzzle elements too will be in,and not the usual find the key kind either.

Aerial battles will resemble Panzer Dragoon orta, but with full range and freedom,no rails action here, and lock on too will be available, unless of course you want to just go straight through, that's up to you.Ground battles will resemble Halo, nuff said there. The battles on transports will consist of about 25% of the game, more or less is up to you.

The game will also be extra intense due to the threat from behind,as our hero's travel forward in to dangers, they will be pursued by hunters whom are in chase of the Fugitive. The fugitives story shall un-veil as the game roles along. So danger will come from everywhere.

The action on foot too will consist of the new Prince of persia game and Halo, the mainstay of all games these days.MGS &Splinter cell stealth too will be there if you choose this way of playing.Main thing is Total freedom.

And the all-important CO_OP mode.For two to 4 players.

The game will consist of two players......Frumpy Jowls, and the Fugitive. They both will have many weapons, and each there own Transport. All as diverse from one another as can be.

Frumpy too will be able to create many zany gadgets, weapons with parts he and the Fugitive collect on there vast journey. Some work as expected and better.............others will be downright funny and dangerous to even them, think Giants, Earthworm Jim and MDK.

So in closing Fist and the Viruoso Bros will be creating 4 characters, with gadgets, devices, weapons, and two transports.Along with a vast Corel Fortress, made up of all the surrounding environment. It shall be quite a challnege for us,but still great fun.We are all three very happy to join in on the fun with the rest of you our CG Brothers.

We will be posting WIP models almost constantly. We hope you enjoy our efforts and have some fun right along with us.

Thanks for bearing with this long post, but I just had to explain as best I could,I hope you understand. Thanks, and on with the show we go.

"and so it begins"
what we have started is due to our own stupidity.. why couldnt we just have keept our big mouths closed..

:D

very nice story! looked a bit long at first, but as I started reading, I just got into the story and it was over before I knew it.
sounds like a game I certainly would wanna play. I miss these old games with that very indepth story behind, almost like a book ;)

oh, and you compared the "scalawags" with "pirates and crusty ol' Dwarves". but wouldnt it be better to compare them with yourself? :p

I look forward to see all of your creations, but especially the witch(I really hope you will make her) and the "corel fortress", sounds extra interesting to me.

trust your eyes, and may they force fail you ;)

I am very impressed with that story and game idea.I think that most important to this challenge is the game idea, what will make people want to play this game, what will make it sell 2 million copies.Well that discription sold me already.Your concept is a winner, just makes me want this game.
The art can only help an already great sounding game, the gameplay will be the most important in the end all the time.Story too is fasinating,Very well put together.
The eyes look intense, done very well,is this a character,or when fully revealed will we see a different look than is shown now.
If the art is near as good as the story and concept for gameplay you have a sure winner of a game on your hands.I'll be checking back.Great start.:applause:

I came here Virtuoso to see what you were up to and then I saw your story and I thought to myself, "That's way to much to read right now." So I started reading and was completely drawn in. First Rate! I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys put together. Sounds like something rich. Your description of the reefs reminded me of a Max Ernst painting.

I'm glad you like the story this much!

fellah: i believe the fortress will be awesome indeed... the witch is not a part of our current plans though... maybe if we have time left in the end (who am i kidding?!)

Besides the characters one of our main focuses will be the vessels, as they will make out a big chunk of the game (depending on the players choices).

I've got the fugitive's vessel planned out to something like 50%, it'll be ready for execution pretty soon... for the gamer it'll be some SERIOUS fun to play with :D.

Expect the vessel that the bros. have planned for Frumpy to be at least as imaginative as the story... you'll be able to see frumpy's craft-skill in every little crest of this monster. it'll be something pretty unique, i don't want to spoil anything while Virtuoso is on the beach though, i don't want to be haunted by Frumpy and his huge and little helpers afterall :scream:

Virtuoso already said that he wasn't sure about the tight deadline.. but now that everything's on go the time of secrets is finally over.. so i can port the fugitive over to this thread, some of you already know him

Bah!! whats with this hype with collaborative work!! I swear to the god for the next challenge im gonna work with someone! LOL. TIght story u got there. Cant wait to feast my eyes on some screenies.

fist - here's my 2 cent's worth. the palms are kinda flat, which i think you've probably yet to tweak. The upper arms seem kinda large for his body, maybe you'll wanna consider toning them down. Nice details on the head! :)

Apt Pupil
06-12-2003, 06:06 PM
And then there was 'Two' Teams, will there now be a third . . . .

Ahhh, at last, now we are getting somewhere, very nice story so far, but, I wanna see me some art i.e concepts.

Fist --> I was wondering who the third man would be, and I see now that it's the talented FIST. This should be interesting. As for your creation so far, it's looking great, but it just needs a few tweaks on the previosly mentioned hands and arms. And perhaps you could put the collar at an angle (lower the front of the collar down towards his chest).

OTherwise, it's a great start dude. keep em coming team!!

Just wanted to come in and give out a big thanks to the very kind comments, and for giving us a very warm welcome. It's very much appreaciated.

I believe to make things equal as a collaboration we should come up with three times the work, all's fair you know.Just to keep things on the level. We do plan on creating 4 characters fully realized with intricate details, fully rigged, and textured.Along with this two transports done in intricate detail are coming. And to top things off a full environment with Architecture.

So when all is said and done even with 3 people we can proudly say we will have twice the work of even a team of three.

I missed out on one item in my post..................Frumpy jowls will be shown as he is.But will have many masks/gadgets than can alter his "real" appearance,so you get more than what you see at first in the long run.

Plus there is a surprise to go with everything else..................Code-named the "gadget"...I'll be showing that with Frumpy 's Body and gadgets, weapons and transport soon.:)

Now some quick personal thank-you's...........

Joebount: Thanks for the welcome, now get back to your "Pumpkin man".

Gregwid: You are too kind, very happy to hear you love the idea.Thanks.

Fellah: To the one and only Fellah.......Thanks very much for the kind welcome, it will both fun to create here and get to watch you and your partners create in your thread.I am waiting to see what wonderful creation you have in store for the CG World.I know it will be
 .......................Thanks again, your support is very much appreaciated.

Neox: Thanks for the welcome and for liking the concept,it means alot to us.Seeing your work in the past and now with the new creation shows we all are up against a major talent. But in the end we all win and gain new nice pieces to our portfolios......Yes.Plus all the fun. Thanks again.

Jelwa: Thanks, happy you love the concept.I hope you will enjoy what we do throughout.I'll keep an eye out for your thread too, trust me,you are doing great.

DimitrisLiatsos: Thanks to the Greek GOD............Your welcome is very much appreaciated, your humor is also always great to see.And your avatar never looked soooo great. My girlfriend wanted to kiss him when she saw him on screen.

BladeFX: Thanx....Glad to see you here.Hope you will like what we do beyond the concept, keep working on your massive transport,I will be checking up on it.

Martypt: You are too kind. But it's always great to read such praise,it means alot obviously.Thanx again.

Joril: Great to see you here, thanks for the welcome, always nice to see you.Yes the work, and story are massive, almost as massive as beautiful Belgium.;) ..........Thanks for the welcome again.

Janhath:You really make it easy to keep going with such high praise such as you have bestowed upon us.Thanks very much,it means alot.

m@.: I am very Happy you like the story m@.A big thanks for the warm welcome.I am always looking for your next creation,we need more from you,you are a true talent.

Franky: way too kind, thanks for the overly kind words,it gives us more push.

Sel: All three eyes, you are as clever as you are a talented artist. Big thanks for the support.Means alot, gives us that extra energy. Thanks friend.

Mikael P.: So great to see my old friend here.I sure do miss you being around.Always there with the best advice.I hope to see you around more often here and in other threads if possible. This place is only better with you here for both advice and showing off your skills.I hope all is great for you,now that you are a big timer. Thanks for the support,it's appreaciated.Don't be a stranger. And thanks again for the welcome.

Gamoron: I am very Happy you like the story. What I need is you to bring my ideas out of my head and onto your canvas or monitor. Max Ernst is wonderful. But I still prefer a Gamoron anyday. Thanks very much.

DOM: Thanks for the welcome.I will make it fair to all.Three people but 6 times the work will come. Are we cool. Thanks for the support, you know it's appreaciated.

Apt Pupil: Who is this guy again.....
;) ..............Oh yes MR>talent himself. Thanks for the welcome. You want art, well it's coming. We are all over the place,a boot here,a hand there,a sub-D here,a weapon here,a vessel part there,on and on it goes.We have tons done already, been working from day 1.But must start piecing things together. Art updates coming, I promise.I am looking forward to your art very much as well, now get going on it.Thanks again.

OK will be back later today to show some work,it has to begin somewhere. Thanks for the support.Very much appreaciated.

OK back with an update:

It's after 3:AM here, you got to love the hours of a CG artist.;)

Here is a WIP of Frumpy Jowls head. A V-Ray edges texture that shows the wire. I wanted to mention that this is not the only version of ol'Frumpy's head,he has an extra ability of shapeshifting his head and facial features and size. Another nice twist & extra fun for gameplay too.

There will be a couple other versions of Frumpy's other looks shown later on.The texturing is on-going,we should show some WIP Texture work tomorrow,it's coming along pretty well.

The head gear and eye ware that will cover his head has just been completed,we are now in the texture process with that as well,we will show it very soon. Very intricate detailed modeling that will be a tough nut to crack in the texture department, but I think it'll be something really nice once completed. Here is to hoping.

The opening you see in the center area of the head is one of the eyeware automatic monorail type gadgets,a movable piece of eyeware, pretty tricked out ,at least we think so.You will see more of it tomorrow.

Well we also are finishing up on his body, extra toys, gadgets, weapons, and his secret fun toy,and then we shall move on to the transport (My true love) and the ol'fortress with environment.

OK here he is,still in WIP form,so go easy on the ol'dude,he will have it tough enough on his wild adventure.Hope you like him.

PS: More from Fist's FUGITIVE is coming up too, including the Fugitive's transport.

Thanks...................

Jelwa: He he,I am very happy you like him, thanks also for the great comments, means a whole lot to us.

Fellah: You know I need your suggestions, but I already told you it's too much for you to handle the LabOOOOOratory under the beach. OK,OK, I need your thoughts. "WARNING" major off-topic rant coming:

The lab is part of a family home on the Beach in Malibu,we had a family building biz,so we built this get away resort type home for the entire fam there. In the slope just below the home and gardens and other fun stuff just in front of the Beach It's about 1o meters above the actual Beach.Built into the slope is this large underground parking garage for the Virtuoso mobiles,a wine cellar,to impress the sweet young ladies of the area, and then seperate from all this is the "LAB". It's a large underground area about 12x15 meters,so lot's of room to create wild creations. It's got a view of the Ocean and Beach directly in front through one large solarium window with balcony. Real cool dungeon lab.Now get your arse over here,we can party and create wonderful creations.I;ll teach you the water sport life, enough of that ice berg living style.;)

Sorry for the off-topic rant everyone, but they just keep asking,so now that I spilled the beans,it's you who owe me some suggestions, but you better be cool with them.;)

Nicodemia:Look above in my reply to Fellah for your answer,by the way nice to see you here.

Scottosh: Hey thanks, really cool you dig it so much.Means alot to be appreaciated, yeah no kidding.;)

Back real soon with an up-date,also plan on showing some WIP texture work for his mug later tonite, handpainted photoshop stuff.See you soon, and thanks again for stopping by.

Hehe i guess i'll have to leave the public relations department to Virtuoso, he's just too fast replying to all of you guys :wip:

Thanks for the compliments all of you!! Still a lot of work to do on The Fugitive... i think i'll completely redo the arms when i get around to modeling the rest of him, i kinda rushed them previously, but for now i've started on the vessel to get a good feel for everything.. there has to be some kind of connection between the too afterall

Here's a little shot of it so you guys know where i'm headed. Consider this a 3d-doodle in terms of details & quality.
The way i do models for my personal projects is making lots of 2d sketches only to play around with shapes in 3d later and do everything completely different...not very effective but fun :D. This is the result of such a 'fiddling-around' session, i think i nailed a shape i like.

A lot more to follow shortly..

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/gameicon/ship01.jpg

so, considering what i said above, what do you guys think so far? i think the flexible elements in the middle are pretty cool and will make this thing look really sweet in motion. with some tricked out weaponry and great handling this could be a awesome 'tool' for the gamer

Swag: So nice of you to think so.Will try to provide more fun as hard as we can.Thanks.

OK an update:

Introducing the "THUMB".........It goes like this: Part of the initiation period to become a Scalawagrequires a sacrifice, not just a mere cutting of the skin to draw blood type deal either, that's for sissy's. Part of becoming a Scalawag is sacrificing your thumb.................................Both of them.:p

Yes all Scalawags have no natural thumbs(not anymore],after they are officially inducted into the clan. But they get these freaked out spiffy new thing-a-ma-jigs in there place.;)

But there are advantages to these eye-sores.Within these thumbs rests a mystical moss type plant. There are these very devious lil'creatures that live only for the plants nectar. These lil'creatures are the size of hummingbirds, but lethal as can be.They have a poison that can bring down even the larger creatures. Those stung by the lil'creatures are deprived of sensation or the power of movement they are paralized.

These lil creatures were experiments of some long lost mad scientist, they are both organic and manufactured, small but dangerous as can be.

Thus the Scalawags (Frumpy Jowls) have come to an agreement, the Scalawags let the lil'creatures eat to there hearts content from the mysticall plant within these thumbs, and in return do whatever the Scalawags order them to do.

So when the Scalawags go on the hunt for food or are in chase of enemies they send there lil'creatures ahead to sting and then paralize the victims. Then the Scalawags can do whatever they feel from there.

They are also used as spies.Plus in the gameplay department the gamer will get to play as these lil'creatures, just another option.More versatility again.

It's still got some tweaking,but that's a start.Hope you think it's cool.:)

Fist : can't wait to see the finished vessel... I have had my idea of what you are capable of with your A&B entry. About the fugitive, I think the face needs much work, but the design is great.

Virtuoso: respects to your prolific brain. Those stories are inspired:buttrock:. For the 3d part, you sure have your own style. I think the mouth and the nostrils are a bit "pinched" . And nice thumb so far.

Your extra pair of eyes are totally valuable to me,very much appreaciated. I take your advice any day of the week.

You know it's true about the slighlty pinched look, you do have a good eye.I did this intentionally,it gives him the charcater i am after.I have had him in the "UN-Pinched" look,he just lost his "Character",I want him to look abit zesty,a bit nasty,a bit bitter, but still bright and a bit on the fun side.Anyways it's always great hearing from you, your advice is right on,and your nice comments very much appreaciated. Thanks again.Back to the lab.

Hi again..............OK here is a first pass at Frumpy's head textures. I wanted to remind you that the heart of his head's looks are also coming ,the head and eye gear, modeling is finished, and the texturing is on it's way.We will post that real soon too.

Also the statues of Jack Squat & Checkmate will be showcased tomorrow, with a temp texture, more quality will come later.

And then to do my true love's the Transport & Fortress.

Oh yes and the body of Frumpy is being completed as well, texturing on that too will start in a few days as well, along with some trick gadgets,weapons,etc,etc...

OK...........Hope you like the lil' guy. Remember he is not a human as we know them,he is a caricature come to life,as are all the Scalawags, think of him as in-between human and toon, A realistic toon, I do. Thanks.

Please remember that this is a WIP...lighting,and texture work, plus extra head gear and eye gear is yet to come.

waw, I go away for less than 24hours and there are tons of new updates and pages of replies and fun stories!

that place you work at virtuoso, it sounds like a fricking dreamplace!! you are very lucky to be able to work at a place like that. if I would ever pass by malibu, I would go to the beach and look for you. I'm sure it would be quite easy to spot you.
I would just look for where the sun shines at it brightest, where the waves are at their highest, and where all the old fart are :D

over to the work,
when I first was the model I knew the VBrothers hands had been there touching him. you have quite a unique style I must say. very nice, model as well as textures and design.

the first thing that struck me as weird though was, as said by others, the nosetrils and the mouth. but, I understand if you want to keep them,
Those nostrils are developed like that so he can smell lil'fellah's and Pumpkin men,and then blaze them out of existence
:D :D :D !!!

a few other things, it looks as if the eyes have a tad to much luminosity. and the lighting makes the model look a bit
plain. nothing that a bright backlight and a keylight couldn't handle. also, if you would like to go to the extrems. you could add that little wet line under the eyes.

I'm glad the pressure in this challenge made you join in, you have brought us alot of fun here, the stories are topfun to read and the 3d work is beautiful to look at.
looking forward to more.

MikaelPersson
06-14-2003, 07:11 PM
Hi,
Nice creation Virtuoso, but as mentioned earlier, those nostrils (I have read what you said ;)) seem just a tad to thin. And as fellah said, the luminosity of the eyes is a bit to much, otherwise I really like those eyes.
That leather hat/creation is a nice touch, I like it, I presume you are going to fix the edges of it? But that probably wont be visible in the final creation anyway, so it might be a waste of time.
My biggest concern really is the squashed shape of his head, the more I look at it the more I like it. But it does feel like you've just compressed the head slightly. I think you should change the proportions of certain parts to reflect that. Right now the proportions are just a normal head that is scaled down. To accomodate for the squashed head the nose could be bigger/wider, the cheeks fuller and so on. I do hope you understand what I am getting at.
Another thing that is contributed to this wierd feeling is his slooping forehead, it starts to long back. Maybe you should start the decline much further towards the face, and why not make it stronger too. But that feeling might be the camera angle/focal length causing it too.

oh well, I hope you can make something out of my disorganised critique. seeya.

fist, Good start of that ship, I do remember that A&B thing so I have complete confidence in you creating something really nice.
It's still a doodle so it's hard to do any serious critiquing, but a general thought would be mix those organic shapes with a few really hard corners. Join the different organic modules with parts of metal inbetween. The contrast could be nice I think.

Good luck folks!

OK an up-date:

We have finished off the modeling for the secondary characters "Jack Squat" & "Checkmate".

They are probably the Worlds highest poly count props. We will show wires, and many close-up detailed shots of the intricate details we have put into them.weapons, gadgets, head gear, manufactured hands, speacial boots.

Please remember that they will be just behind the main characters and there transports for the planned final shot. Yes the Worlds most expensive props poly wise.

Remember too they are statues in the scene, that's there role for this scene. For the story on them ( If you are interested) you can read page 1 of this thread.

Now I am not allowing crits for the texturing or lighting. What you see is a very basic light set-up,and a "Placeholder texture",so please judge the model, style etc,etc...The texture is just a very basic overly reflective bronze,a quick test.

The final will have a aged "OXIDIZED" bronze look. We will work on those textures along with everything else in the coming weeks.Plus the lighting will get the major overhaul as well.

OK remember please don't judge the textures or lighting, this is just a modeling WIP look at what'
s up with the Statues Jack Squat & Checkmate thus far.

Thanks we hope you like them thus far.

"But nothing about these last ones a.................OK then."

I got lazy:p However, this new full picture you have showed . . . very impressive!! You certainly have a very distinguished style. The lighting and details are exquisite and very well designed. The only thing I find wierd though, is the big beast's fingers and heel. Perhaps this is to suggest it's mechanical stiff nature, but perhaps bending the fingers a bit and bending the heel and put the front toes firmly rested on the floor might bring it more to life.

Otherwise, everything else is looking great!! It's always nice to come into this thread and find what new intracate wonders you guys have come up with. Keep it up, I am anxious to see more:wip: :wip:

Ok another Up-date:

This is an introduction to a lil' toy/gadget/weapon of Frumpy Jowls our adventuring Scalawag.

This "TOY" is really a body-guard. When thinking of game Icons I think Hooks or speacial somethings are needed. Whatever they might be. Well one of these more memorable "hooks" of which help create game icons is Frumpy's toy. Another large part of Frumpy's game icon stature will be his Transport wild and zany contraption "Steed of Steel" Batman had the bat-mobile and Frumpy Jowls has the Steel Steed ..............but more of that later...........

This toy is a body gaurd. It is attached to Frumpies body,it circles him and protects him from all sides and all dangers. A true body gaurd. It is a "walking weapon"........very powerful and very intelligent,it has quite a high IQ.

In the game players can control the weapon as they see fit, attached to Frumpy or de-tached,it can go off on it's own. For CO-OP play other players can take over control,or just let the PC or high level consoles do the work for you, high levels of A.I are in too,we are talking 4 gig PC's, XBOX 2 or PS3's are we not. Options and more options will always become available to the gamers.

I will start off by showing the Boots of this weapon/gadget from a couple angles. The rest of the weapon/gadget will be shown in full tomorrow. Remember these Boots are not for Humans,so the shape is not what we are accustomed to. And remember that the rest of the device/weapon are not shown yet.Just the boots.
:p

Ok here they are,more tomorrow,thanks again.

Are you sure there are only three of you,man oh man, great stuff, totally done with such style and grace,And that's without the finished lights and textures.I loved that lilttle guy you did,but now even more, and of this quality it's really remarkable. And you promise even more, that's good news. Those boots are Off the chart cool, can't wait for the rest, the craft is looking real good too for an early stage. All of it is real original too, great job.

Nice update!!

I wish I had the time to join you guys in 3d, but finals have been doing me in. Either way, I think you guys are doing fantastic! I now have a question for you! The wire frame render or screen grab looks lovelly, I know, im crazy but, I was wondering how you got that effect, is it a composite job etc.?? I had some ideas I could do to play around with it. Terrific all in all, :) , im sitting in the far dark corner of the room watching your progress. Keep it coming..

Hi Redf & SEL, glad you enjoy this. look for lots more constant updates all the time ;)

SEL: I don't know if Virtuoso did it this way, but with 3dsmax you can achieve this effect by simply enabling wireframe rendering for a shader and rendering it out, the material renders exactly the same, with highlights and everything but only where there are wires ;)

Where the mesh is very dense (look at some of the creases on the boots) it looks like it's normally shaded...

As promised I am back with an up-date.

Our last update showed the "BOOTS" of Frumpy Jowls walking weapon/gadget.Now we will show the whole gadget/weapon.

This weapon is really a body-guard to Frumpy Jowls. It can spin and rotate, swivil up and down, fire at targets both in front and behind Frumpy. It is attached to Frumpy and at times released on it's own. It has Hi levels of A.I..

As for the game itself it can be played by the main player along side Frumpy,or as a helper or familiar being controlled by the PC and or Consoles of the near future.:p

Also the co-op option allows for other players to take control when they get the urge.

It's only about half a meter in height.Remember that Frumpy Jowls is ony about 1 meter in height, and that's on his toes.;)

Thanks, for the support, and keep on the look out for more,we have alot planned still................:)

I have just started on the Steed of Steel tonite,Frumpy Jowls Transport, research and references behind me now, actual work will commence.Texturing on the intricate eye&head gear too is almost finished,we think.;)

Cheers to you all.

Great stuff. I especially like that "thinking gun". Great idea&execution&details.
But I would suggest to add to it a kinda "brain-zone" coupled with many sensors like eyes, antennae, stuff... to show that it's got an elaborate AI..an elaborate AI means information-gathering and information-integration; hence a material structure to execute those functions ; for now it looks like a simple gun on legs... but a damn cool gun on legs though;)

ok here's yet another little update from me, little because there's a lot of reallife action happening around me at this time

just finished my final exams, so there's a lot of partying going on at the beach (i live very near a beach too you know :D) and in the clubs, i can't miss out on that

anyway, here's the start on the fugitives cockpit. It has a free-flowing seat that can be tilted forward so he's almost standing in the cockpit. This way he gets a complete view of the whole surroundings. The ships controls will be integrated into the armrests. The "windshield", the back of the cockpit, and the adjustable mechanism of the seat will get a lot more detail in the next update. Then comes more definition on the hull, then texturing, then back to the charcter. then then then ;)

It will have even more magic with more work and textures,But still more due to the contrast of looks with my up-coming transport.

Well get off of that German island Beach and get to :wip: .;)

hi guys,

amazing work in this thread :bounce:

nothing to crit here ;)

At first i didn't know if that fugitive's transport design would work, but as i saw it with the cockpit, I loved it

btw...Fist: the cables that are connected to the pilot seat looked like they were dynamic/animated in your avi. Am I right, or was it just the perspective ?
I'm asking because I would like to have the cables that stick out of Dr.Dreads neck also to be dynamic/moving when animated. Is there some sort of spline dynamics or something or do they have to be animated by hand ?

to virtuoso: incredible !
so much details in your models, and you are damn fast. Or do u just live in some sort of secret time-zone where u have 30 hours a day ? ;)
I'm going to follow this thread for sure from now on...keep that great images coming

Virtuoso: aahhh... this is amazing! the stompers look at least as good as the bot :D awesome!

and the weapon.. what can i say! it looks like it's made of wood, even without textures, exceptional

guys: glad you like the cockpit! still lots of work to do, and a little suprise concerning the vessel :D

H13: it was supposed to be a simple temporary setup, but works pretty well actually.

It's a polygon object. I soft-selected the verts on the cable that are connected to the seat and then put a linked-xform modifier on top, linking those verts to the seat. Now, due to the soft-selection, those verts pull everything down

yep.. ready to be posted now

Here's the deal: If you read the story you know that The Fugitive crash-landed on Frumpy's homeworld. L'eternel. After meeting the Fugitive and repairing his ship Frumpy just couldn't help himself.. he had to add some of his own improvements to the vessel. He added a Gadget port, where the player will be able to attach numerous gadgets throughout the game. You can attach one to each wing.. this will play a pretty big role if you choose the Fugitive Vessel for aerial missions. Players will have to choose wisely. There will also be missions where you will need one of these gadgets to be successful.

Some of these gadgets will be so complex that you can switch to an AI controlled autopilot to maneuver them accurately.

Now the first Vessel-gadget is The Gripper... very helpful indeed

here is a previz animation of the gripper (http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/gameicon/ship05_theGripper_preview2.avi), pay attention to the mechanics, i spend a whole lot of time rigging this beast, don't want that time to get lost ;) ;)

...and here's the wireshot:

Holy crap!

This is amazing guys!!

Nice story, great models full of details, teamwork seems to be very efficient! :bounce:

I agree that only one gripper would make it tough to fly such a vessel. What about a retractable gripper that could go back in the wing when not in use? The vessel would more stable this way.oups, you posted a reply before me but I'll leave the retractable gripper question! :)

Anyway, it is just a suggestion (it would look great in an animation! :buttrock: ), your work is impressive.

fist -> How did you model the body of the vessel (reactors included)? Is it box-modelling? (noob question :hmm: )

mv
06-20-2003, 10:31 AM
Great work Fist...that vessel has a nice design.
I really like the "gripper", truly looks like a gadget added on the vessel.. But I think the gadgets should have some parts modelled by the Vbros to have the Frumpy Frowls look :)

Keep it up guys!

Aearon
06-20-2003, 10:39 AM
BladeFX: :p.. ok modeling's never really finished ;)

McFly: Pretty cool idea, but remember that the gripper is an addition frumpy made, so it's not perfect ;) and there's really no space inside the wing with the turbine in the way :wip:

m@.: thx for the compliments. And I know what you're talking about.. it's hard to match that style of course, but i think we'll get it close enough with frumpy-rusty textures. the most important part is that the gripper & the other gadgets look very different from the rest of the vessel, which i think it does. :) Another spot on crit, we'll take care of it :D

Virtuoso
06-20-2003, 11:04 AM
Ok..................Hi guys.Yes those extra parts on the Fugitives transport have been created by Frumpy Jowls (In actuality by Fist) the little mad inventor/warrior. Those added parts will take on the same texture pallete as Frumpys transport the up-coming "Steed of Steel".I think this will really add to the overall look and feel we are going for.The contrast will show even more this way,a alien/fugitive in a very strange and hostile new World.

Fist mentioned earlier that throughout the game it is our intention to have the gameplayers discover parts, and with this create all sorts of mad cap and fun,but sometimes very dangerous weapons and tools. In many cases these items/weapons will be essential in completing tasks or gaining access to new locations or hidden secrets/rewards etc,etc...Also this will help in creating many funny situations (Think Earth worm Jim,MDK,Giants)...............The game will be heavy hitting and serious, very rugged, but the light fun too will compliment it very well.

:)

Thanks guys for the input and nice words, tips and suggestions are always welcome...always great to be appreaciated,it's very nice of you to take the time to say so. BladeFX don't you have a certain transport yourself to get to.......................I thought so.;)

m@: You have a great eye.We will do just as you mentioned,You are always ahead of the game. Our plan is to give the extra Frumpy Jowl made/created parts/items the look of Frumpys inventory............Rust,it'ss steamy, hot,Humid in the Coral reefs,it causes Rust at high rates. But corrosion can look beautiful too you know...............;)

Thanks M@ for your ever great suggestions and those nice words. It's greatly appreaciated all the time. You are tooooo cooool.

BladeFX: it certainly needs a lot more work! Thanks for pointing out some problems. The linear scratches are what gives it the brushed metal look though :D

some bigger scratches go against that direction

Dimi: That device is created by Frumpy Jowls the mad inventor/warrior.He has created it with parts from his storage/equipment.It shows the contrast even more of the two very different companions. There is another part coming. This gadget too is created by Frumpy Jowls.

Remember that the Fugitive is a strange visitor to this place l'Eternel,my home World. The two strange beings will travel together on a great journey. They have met here in a vast corel and mesa covered land.Steamy hot,and very humid. Thus the extra rust.

Up-dates are in the oven now, coming soon, thanks, any suggestions or ideas for more, let us know,we will create them, and name them after you, hehe. Thanks very much for your continued support.

fist - I love the work! Can we see a view from the top showing the propelor?
The only piece of criticism I have, is that the ship is very aerodynamic, and the arm really, really isn't... The two styles really conflict in my opinion... Maybe if you could maybe have a retracted and extended syle to the arm...?

OK......here is another update:

As we continue to model &Texture many seperate objects,we will try to show these best we can. What we are showing now is Frumpy Jowls Our Mad inventor/warrior's Eye/head gear/size].

We plan on showing it on little Frumpy Jowls the easy go lucky explorer/adventuring Scalawag's head tomorrow.

He uses these contraptions/gadgets to aid him in creating off-beat off the wall gadgets & weapons. This apparatus is connected to Frumpy's head gear not shown here. But we will show Frumpy's head, head gear, and this apparatus in one package tomorrow.

This Texture is still WIP.....We will be balancing it more in final shots with all items in one group.

We have also been texturing little Frumpy's Body,gadgets,extra's,etc,etc...We will show Wip's of this too in a couple days,if the Cg Gods above are kind to us ;) .,

Also the transport [size=3]"The Steed of Steel", Frumpy's trusty companion is under way,a quirky fun gadget in it's own right,it will be a big part of Frumpy's "ICON" status,a memorable one to say the least.Updates and looks on this too is coming all next week.

Also look for Fists further work on the Fugitives transport,he has another surprise cooked up for you.

Have fun,we hope you like them.

Hi Rez version......... Click here.

I would also like to point out something about the rust. The reason for such an amount is the fact that in this corel reef area of L'eternel it is extremly hot, with very high levels of humidity. With large thunderstorms, countless dangers, our little hero has no time for the proper care of his gadgets/weapons.But corrosion can be beautiful too in it's own right we think.

Jelwa: Jelwa, hehe.. your vote would be most welcome, but wait wait, everything you've seen is just bits and pieces.. you have to vote for the final afterall pic ;)

I'm back with another little toy that the player can attach to the Fugitive Vessel.

[little snippet from Virtuoso]:
Frumpy is a skirt chasing, treasure seeking Scalawag, adventurer,as a Scalawag they take from the Corrupt rich and give half to the poor,of course they keep the other half for wenches and Rum and ale, good German ale that is.HEHE. But they traesure hunt, they are always in search for more hidden treasures.
[/end]

once again, this drill gadget opens up whole new possibilities. It will allow you to gain access to hidden riches and even huge dungeons that you couldn't access otherwise. This is where our deformable terrain system will really come in handy ;)

Here's a start, the mechanics for operating the drill are in place, just the drill itself is missing hehe... back to :wip:

click to view previz animation (http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/gameicon/drill_preview.avi)

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/gameicon/drill01.jpg
Textures are just photoshop overlays again, we'll work on textures for my models once we're getting anywhere near the final shot. Just modeling away for now..

*edit* swag: because basically everything is still missing (vessels, vessel details, frumpy body, fugitive body, set) i think the polycount will be a lot higher :D

I really think the detail adds to the realism of the project. That's something I really encourage and admire. But sometimes people go too far with detail....you guys have just enough and things look great. I really wish I had more critique for your work, but so far it's looking like it's going in the right direction!

**sidenote-----Go Mavericks!---it's too bad that the Lakers and the Mavs didn't have a chance to play each other in the playoffs. At least we both got beat by the eventual champion right?**

You guys are fricking crazy, come on Virtouso i know that you have slaves who model for you there in your lab,it really isn't fair to tell us you really did model all that insane detail you put in your models and texture that in hi-res :shame: . Those slaves must not sleep and eat at all, cuz they work 24/7. No, man that is really insane man, once again i will tell you this : You have absolutely amazing skills.I love texture work, love how you did all the corrosion.Just one tip though, don't let the textures be too uniform, break them up a bit.
Fist: Amazing job on modeling and rigging that vehicle, also great start on texturing
I also think if you continue you will not only win this challenge but kill rest of us. :D .

  ............two thumbs up to all of you who have commented with such kind comments. Thanks very much for taking the time to share your thoughts, your far too kind words are very much appreaciated,it makes it all the more worthwhile to create more and to continue on strong. We will work hard like all the other challengers here to bring our ideas to fruition.Again Thanks very much.

We are hard at work on the "Steed of Steel"....Frumpy Jowls transport. Also the texture work on Frumpys body has commenced.Wip's of this will be shown in the next days.

The transport is quite the gadget/contraption a very complex piece of work thus far,fun as can be,but quite the undertaking.I am busy with it's cockpit, and it's speacial toy the "chair"at the moment.

Ok up-dates will be coming on all this dailey,we hope.I will have a couple full sized renders of ol'Frumpy Jowls head fully textured, handpainted in PS,with head/eye gear all together. Coming up in just a little while.Stay tooned.

Again thanks for the great support,we are very appreaciative for it,obviously.See you soon.

Im still up! thought ide be the first to reply on the latest update! Well It looks great :buttrock: , but I must say find another background, cous its totally clashing with your character. I was thinking maybe the green on the character was distracting, but I think its the background, Maybe no background or something else. Either or, its up to you, I know its just used for presentation of the piece. Other than that. Very detailed, very well modeled, and everything looks like its coming together perfectly! Keep those updates coming!

Once again all we can say is Thank-you very much for the compliments & the words of encouragement, they mean alot to us. Big thanks once again, for taking the time to express your thoughts.

A couple things I must mention: Fist our hard-working friend will only get back to this thread on Thursday,it looks like we worked him too,too hard down in the laboooratory.;)

Look for his character the Fugitive and the final touches to his transport at that time,he also has more on the gadgets coming.

We are now texturing Frumpy Jowls, and also doing some fine tuning on the statue textures. Also the modeling of the Steed of Steel Frumpy's transport and faithful companion is well on it's way.I have been working on a spicey little device for the cockpit area. Lot's of fun,but quite the challenge. The rest of the transport is underway,we will be showing it in WIP form all this week.

After this I will begin on another facet of our planned scene,a surprise as of now.

Ok we will be back later with a look at Frumpy's squat legged, big headed, large bulbous fingered, extra long "Knucklewalker" arms and body soon.;)

Thanks very much again for the very kind comments, they mean alot to us.

Redf..............LOL........He is a long armed funny tweaked out kind of guy.Extra long arms, his hands basically can rub up against the floor/ground when walking, extra large hands with very bulbous fingers.Squat legs, normal torso.
Remember he is a "REALISTIC TOON" a Caricature if you will. Exagerated features extraordinary look from a character in a wild out of this World place.
There is a whole crew of these Scalawags, rum lovin skirt chasing treasure finding warriors.
Frumpy Jowls is a cross really,a warrior/inventor.OK.I'll be back soon enough.A few more things to do.Thanks for your interest.

Onsloh: It's up coming. We have been working quite hard,we will be up-dating through the week,if all goes to plan.So stay tooned,it'll be here in a couple hours or so,we have some things in the oven being baked just right. Thanks for the interest.

Johnlittle: Thanks for the very kind words.Yes we are still on schedule,it's always tight, but I think we will still be creating the Fortress and environment. But first the transport and the texturing of Frumpy Jowls Body need to be taken care of this week. Thanks again for the compliments.

EriK:Jules Verne,Davinchi.... ...I certantly am influenced a great deal by those great visionaries,in a very big way. Thanks for coming by,it's very nice of you.

MartyPT: Big thanks to you too. Those kind of coments make it all the more fun and worthwhile to go on strong.

OK back in a while with Frumpy's body, the long armed, squat legged little old warrior/inventor, realistic toon is coming up soon, the texturing has been going well,we will show that later this week along with up-dates on the transport itself.Fist will also be back on Thursday with updates on the Fugitive and his transport.

Thanks again all.

Here is a look at Frumpy Jowls body with walking gadget/weapon.A textured version is coming this week.
You will notice the exaggerated realistic toon look .Extra long arms large hands with bulbous fingers, short squat legs.
The Scalawags are a very large crew/clan,they come in many sizes & shapes,Frumpy just so happens to have a extra long pair of arms (Knucklewalker).I like to experiment with all kinds of shapes in many old formulas created by all the Toon legends of the past.

So a reallistic toon/caricature direction I have gone with him at this time.

Please ignore the somewhat rigid look.I have only given little Frumpy Jowls a very basic rig.A full rig is coming this week with textures. The hands and fingers will be quite pliable then.

OK.thanks.And again, full rig & Textures coming this week, along with his trusty Steed of Steel transport.
