View Full Version : VFX: Matrix Reloaded meets Star Wars, A.I. and Terminator ...
MasterZap 06-12-2003, 08:39 AM I know threads with moving images in gets a low response here, but I ask you humbly to please check this out....
Allow me to present a little movie I made
INTERMEZZO DUALIS - RELOADED
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/kidwars/intermezzo/id.jpg (http://www.kidwars.com/intermezzo)
It's a 6 minute short featuring visual effects including
- actor cloning - with moving camera and advanced interaction
- motion tracking
- live action/cg integration
- digital scene extensions
- various energy effects
- decapitation, dismemberment, mayhem, and a wheelbarrel o' fun! :D
I created, filmed, and wrote the film, made all visual effects, acted all parts, and wrote and performed all the music.
Comments highly appreciated!!
EDIT: Film now hosted at TFN THEATRE (fanfilms.com) (http://www.theforce.net/theater/fxprojects/intermezzo/index.shtml), please get it there, that version has BETTER AUDIO anyway!
Windows Media (17 Mb) (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/kidwars/intermezzo/intermezzo-dualis-reloaded.wmv)
QuickTime (37 Mb) (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/kidwars/intermezzo/intermezzo-dualis-reloaded.mov)

Haha... that was excellent... I see you didnt let your kids "star" in this one Zap. As fun as your previous works have been this one really did shine.... some nice work.
But dont tell me you rotoscoped the mask on all of the clone shots? Or did you stick a makeshift bluescreen out on the lawn, or something like Mokey Perhaps? And how did you achieve the nice matching pan, cos i'm pretty sure you wouldnt have a motion-control camera so you must've either rigged up something to simulate it or you've filmed you static, keyed and tracked yourself into point in the footage....
Anyway really nice work...I enjoyed it.

okay, now that's funny.
Very cool composting and integration of 3D.
The last shot (where you see the inside of your head) is IMHO the best part: very very impressive.

Nice to see a TFN fanfilmer on these boards. VERY NICE stuff you've got there. I especially liked the hand, and your innovative approach to the opening text.

Thank you everybody!
Here is a littl' teaser still frame from the film... enjoy :)
http://w1.164.telia.com/~u16402588/intermezzo-frame.jpg
you've got waaaaay too much free time!
Unemployment does that to one, unfortunately.
How long did the whole process take you?
To make the whole film? A few months, but far far from full time... scraped-together snippets of time here and there.... but then again most of it was rendering time anyway :)
But dont tell me you rotoscoped the mask on all of the clone shots? Or did you stick a makeshift bluescreen out on the lawn, or something like Mokey Perhaps?
Okay, then I won't tell you that... but I did... mostly. There is a document now with some "behind the scenes" info here (http://www.kidwars.com/intermezzo/intermezzo-effects.html)
are you a pro fx guy ??
Not yet. Wanna help me change that? :)
Had been working by oneself?
Yes, I am the guy both behind and in front of the camera.......!
Holy sh-t that is awesome! Everyone needs to see this
THANK YOU!
Im still wondering what you would be able to do with the right actors camera, and studio. If you lived a little closer I would love to do one of these things with you.
I am wondering the same thing myself. Thanks :)
You've gotten a hell of a lot better since KID WARS!
Heh, tell me about it :)
why are this laserwords so small,
Kid size, y'know.
It's actually a vacuum-cleaner pip with some duct-tape on it to mark the "end" of the hilt and "beginning" of blade. Hi tech huh? :)
THAT IS AWESOME...how do u pull all that alone!??
Well I just clone myself in my zaptronic-clone-o-matic and then I go....
wow awesome lol
Heh, with an Agent Smith avatar one is not suprised it was up your alley :)
STAR WARS is dead
long live Starship Troopers
But StarShip Trooper is an OLD film, Star Wars is brand new. Isn't it? Or did I miss something? *irony alert, irony alert, irony alert*

It was amazing and great!!!! I only saw one mistake. After you knock ummm...yourself through the garage door....the part right after that there is no hole in the garage door. Then later the hole reappears. I don't know...maybe I am the only one that noticed that. Like I said before though GREAT WORK. It looked like it was a lot of fun to make.

DEAR GOD... that was great. Behold what can be done with just a computer, alot of spare time and the willpower. Amazing. I would love to see you take on doing the effects for another's person's project. I mean, you did this in your BACKYARD and GARAGE! Just think if you took on a film with some great cinematography.
I am apart of a film group here in Hollywood, Ca ... we randomly trade scripts and then film them: no matter what the script is about. Some of them have been great work. (If only you lived out here, we would definitely put you to work!) It would be great for you to have a portfolio with some serious work that takes place other than in your garage. You might get employed doing somthing you would actually like!
Exellent exellent exellent Visual effect!! :D great work!, I am a bit suspicious about the filming and the editing ;) but the rest makes it! :D woaw!
I've looked at it serveral times :D just great :)

Thanks guys! And beer is always welcome! *hic*
It was amazing and great!!!! I only saw one mistake. After you knock ummm...yourself through the garage door....
While the actual reason for this was laziness, I like to pretend I did it on purpouse... this gives everyone one "obvious" BIG flaw to complain about so they don't see all the other teeny flaws :)
The main reason I didnt do it was... lack of strength, and lack of footage of the opened door in those shots (for the interior being seen through a hole)
DEAR GOD... that was great. Behold what can be done with just a computer, alot of spare time and the willpower
Yes, thank yoU! Exactly my thoughts. By golly, what a mad enough individual can do these days :)
(If only you lived out here, we would definitely put you to work!)
There's the net, nowdays, you know. I've telecommuted for 15 years, why not 15 more?
I am a bit suspicious about the filming and the editing
Feel free to elaborate, I am always eager to learn. I know I break the line a few times, and some editing might be...well... odd (although I mostly like it, but I am odd myself :) )
It has a lot of "hidden" work(like the reflection of the sabers on the sunglasses 8)
That, and the removal of some lightsabres and the removal of me looking into the camera at one point.
heh it's finally done, Looks good and its better than kidd wars.
PS: Didnt knew you were a cg talk member.
Oh, another TFN'er? How cool! :D
um.... that blew me away. I just don't comprehend how that's done.
Does somebody want to give me a link or some kinda book reference to show me how to do that kind of stuff?

That rocks dude, I've done a little bit of compositing myself (some sample movies on my site) but this is so cool. I hope this convinces an effects studio that with some guidance and a big budget that you can turn some really cool looking effects into movie quality. Nice idea with the head regeneration.
Oh man, I really need to get myself a DV Cam. Oh by the way, you probably already mentioned it but what 3D and compositing software you use. After Effects?

hahah this is great, a little hammy, but that adds to the charm, and you said yourself it's not an acting experiment.
I lvoed the multiple you shots, really came off pretty nice actually...and that could have looked horrid...great job.
all in all besides a few things you yourself already brought up (no hole in garage door and some punching stuff) its amazing....doubled by the fact you did this alone..

Great humour and daring FX-work.
The scene with the water taps re-assembling the guys face is just a total classic. And the fact that all this action is placed on the country side in the middle of Sweden is so bizarre!
Simply put: Awesome.

That was the sweetest short movie I've ever seen, and it had pretty much all the special effects that big production movies have. Companies would be waisting their resources not hiring you. I've watched this thing almost 10 times already and I just HAD to post. I'm gonna be returning to your website now looking for updates and new movies.
