There are two things that springs to mind: "fire effect", and "volume fog". Look up those words in the helpfile to see what they are and what they can do. Despite neither of them being specifically about smoke I think you can likely tweak their settings to look like it.
That's without the use of plugins.
For more realistic smoke and advanced rendering and control (about as realistic and advanced there is available), you could go the way of Afterburn (http://www.afterworks.com), a plugin for MAX that specializes in rendering smoke, explosions, flames, that sort of stuff.

another good solution is by using the "sandblaster" plugin from Digimation, i think it's the perfect tool for your case.. i've once seen that sample video of green smoke coming out of a wooden chest through the keyhole .. the smoke was flying around the room then it returned again to the chest the same way.
with sand blaster you define objects to be the emitters & targets of the particles.. so you can scale down a clone of the bottle .. using it as your main emitter, giving the particles a smokey material..using the facing particles with a high number of particles can give you good results.
(if you have a version of the old max 2.. those were the happy days when some versions included sandblaster for free with gr8 educational scenes)

Why don't you just try it with implemented particle systems like the pcloud and parray?
