Infinyte4D 06-12-2003, 03:37 AM Hey guys. Here is a quick render of my character, Neo. It took me only a day to make this guy and will be animated once i get a final version. All critiques welcome ;]

can we see a wireframe? for 3224 polys this looks like it could be made with about half that. for one day that's a pretty sweet deal but I think you should drop a day or two more into refinining this and trying to better use some of those polys. ie: hands, details, face, hair.

For a low poly model, I think you could due to get rid of the wringles in the shirt and either get rid of them, or transfer the polygons into either the head or the boots.
The proportions look perfect in everywhere but the hands as was mentioned.
Last thing is the face, which as a whole looks too "fat". The mouth also doesn't look right, possibly too thin, but the smooth shading may be throwing that off.
But this may just be me, Good job

thx guys. I intentionally made him high poly even if i did use it in areas not necesarily needed. Its something i want to get used to for future games like halflife2, where the poly budget is like 4000. I see what your saying about face and hand proportions and ill post an update soon.

ok here is a small update i did this mourning. I made head slightly skinnier, fixed mouth, detailed hairline, adjusted hands and slightly adjusted the leg/stomach props. Im sure once i get a skin on him he will look much better... but im not much of a ps guy ;]
All critiques welcome.

Good work.
As stated above. You should add more detail to the hands, and perhaps removing some polys from the feet (if they're gonna be that dark, what good will all those polys do? :p ) and removing those folds/cuts? from his torso...they could easily be skinned instead.
Keep up the good work! :buttrock:

i think you should make the head and chin a little narrower

I understand completely what you mean by removing the shirt-folds because that can be textured, but im not doing this so much for performance purposes, but rather modeling experience. Im making this model for the upcoming halflife 2 and I was told the poly budget was 5000 :| So I am going to do a major makover for my next update. My main purpose for this is to build models as good as possible by the time i get out of college. Im only just a graduating sophmore in highschool so I have a long ways. But by the time i get out then the games then will have a much greater level of detail for models. And thats the practice i'm aiming for.
So my next update you will see a 5000 poly Neo ready for action. ;] I'll take into consideration everyone's comments and critiques.

ok peeps. I gotta get working on my next model. But this is the final update for my neo model until the skin gets put on it. It may not seem that much of an update but between the internal mouth, modelled eyes, shoulder holsters, and lots of tweaking i brought the polycount somewhere towards my likings. Thanks for your feedback. ;]

You really should think about removing those wrinkles and folds from the clothing. Those polys would be better be used in defining the face and especially the arms. I know they look neat, but the wrinkles could be incorporated into the bump/normal map. Also they're in black material so the detail is not really going to be noticed as much as the arms and the face. I am hesitant to also say keep the wrinkles in the pants, but they do affect the sillouhette, if just a little.
The proportions do look pretty good, but his wrists look a little thick.

you know, the way HL2 makes things like those wrinkles is with a normals map...
