Title: Overgrown 01
Name: Kyle Webb
Country: USA
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

I recently became interested in the contrast between organic and inorganic materials and decided to make a still with the intention of printing it fairly large. Some would disagree with me in my definition of large so I should specify that this means I'll be printing it somewhere around 30 inches wide.

I had previously been spending so much time on creating work for my portfolio I got lost in the fun part of art. It was nice to make something other than for the purpose of proving my skill level in a demo reel.

Lame title, I know. I hate titles. Anyway, everything was created in Maya and rendered with mental ray. It took me around a month to create. I used Vladimir Kufeld's Mechanical Sleep as a reference for the mechanical objects in the foreground. This image on its own was very inspiring. C&C are more then welcome.

How I share your interest in this contrast....:) Lovely image! The title suggests a series of images with this theme, and I will look forward to see more:) I also think it that would be a good idea to emphasize your idea with more images.. by using the same scene and objects with slight camera tweeking and such, you'll have it for free... I think the idea deserves it. Great work!

Thanks for the replies. I do plan on making a series of these images and for that reason I'm looking for some more critiques. I noticed that the thread dropped from 4 stars yesterday to 3 today. So, I wish those who voted in such a way would critique the image. I'd like to make the next one even better.

I haven't voted yet, so don't blame me:)

Great start... I like the nature vs machinery juxtaposition

I think the big tree needs some more work. the leaves look out of scale(too big) and rather CGish (try some alpha maps to vary the shape) also the roots don't look quite right. I think they need to interact with the floor more...maybe have some of the steel plating on the floor bent up and roots going under it. I don't know it just seems like they are sitting on top.

oh one other thing..I would grunge up the yellow paint some more - the machinery looks really clean to have been sitting there long enough for that tree to get so big.

the lighting and composition look really good, but you may want to put some mechanical stuff way up(out of frame) to cast more shadows... the only shadows are from the objects that are in the frame... it looks like there's got to be something else up there.

for me it's a solid 4 star image now, but I think you can make it 5
congrats

Thanks for the comments. I'll definitely be re-working it for the next one.
