Hi,

I'm new to mentalray. Recently I am working on caustics rendering. The following are my scene setup:

- a glass of water & table (place inside a polyCube, reversed normal)
- all my objects had plugged with photon shader with no black diffuse.
- One sportLight with Checked Emit Caustics.
Photon Intensity = 16000
Exponent = 2.0
Caustics Photon = 600000
- renderGlobal:
Checked Caustics
Accuracy = 150
Photon Reflection = 5
Photon Refraction = 20
Max Photon Depth = 25
- total render frame = 400

- camera static. The only change is the shape of the glass shape & water raise up till half fill up the glass.

I send to render with command prompt. Average rendering is 5 mins per frame. Everything is fine till problem comes that I couldn't figure out why?? At certain frame, the rendering (photon calculation) take very long time (more than 3 hrs still stuck at the line --->

JOB 0.8 progr: 66.4% rendered on myComputer.10

I get impatient, I kill it & start render the frame after this frame. This is fine again till at certain frame later, the rendering stuck again.... this thing keep going on & on ... this make my life miserable... & my deadline is going soon...

Any cue?? Please help!!

found the solution... But I don't think is a good solution...
If frame 5 has problem of rendering, in renderView, set frame at 5.1 to render.

Could you please post one frame of your animation?
Btw, max Photon Depth 25? How many refractive surfaces do you have in your scene??

Are you working with motion blur?

Yesterday I had a smiliar problem with FG (not that extreme like yours) so I upped the processor priority to above average. Then it seemed to progress again. But the whole system was super slow. Almost completely non-responsive to any mouse clicks. So this can't really be a solution.

"Could you please post one frame of your animation?"
sorry, I could not post out any visual of this animation because P&C & on going project.

"Btw, max Photon Depth 25? How many refractive surfaces do you have in your scene??"
Sorry again, I shouldn't put max Photon Depth 25. These value actually is too high, I should put
Photon Reflection = 5
Photon Refraction = 6
Max Photon Depth = 11
which are good enough here.

"Are you working with motion blur?"
I did not use any motion blur.
It was my mistake to put the line here:
"JOB 0.8 progr: 66.4% rendered on myComputer.10"
The correct line that I was stuck was:
"JOB 0.8 progr: 66.4% photon emission on myComputer.5"
I stuck at certain frame in mid of the photon calculation. The frame before & after are running smooth. Why so different on this particular frame?? I'm not sure. So, I test render on with offset point 1, that is working smooth again. This is weird.. anyone know why??

Err...for slow rendering, normally, I'll included "-mem 7200" & "-rt 8" in my bat line, e.g:
render -r mr -rt 8 -mem 7200 -v 5 -s 1 -e 10 -proj W:\myProject -rd W:\output W:\myScene.mb
my render machine have around 8G RAM & processor can support up to 8 threads. I maximize it.
Sometime, I render FG maps 1st, later go for the full render. Hope it helps here..
