Hi

I am trying to figure out the best way to animate Depth Of Field in AE. I render from VRay and presently save and import an .rpf file which I then apply a Depth of Field filter from the 3D Channel drop down. The problem is that it isn't that easy to work with and the results aren't that great.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this ?

Thanks

Frischluft Lenscare (http://www.frischluft.com/lenscare/lenscare.php) is a great plugin for things like this. Your workflow then using your RPF sequence would be to perform an '3D Channel Extract' from your 3D Channel filters, then use that as a depth matte to drive the Lenscare effect on another copy of your RPF layer.

Of course, there are instances when a single depth channel with DoF in post just won't cut it - for example cases where foreground elements are extremely out of focus and overlap with background elements. As the foreground elements are in focus and obscure areas of the background in the 3D renders, you can't recover the detail when applying Depth of Field after the fact. You can either render out multiple passes of elements at various depths, or even use the 3D depth of field in your 3d app (I don't use V-Ray, so I don't know how that works with it), although that of course increases render time dramatically.

Hi

Thanks for your help.

I have tried a different method with the image sequence rendered separately to the Z Depth rendered and connected in AE and it works well.

I am wondering though, what is the best way to setup the Z Depth in the 3D app ? By that I mean should it render out with white in the foreground with a good gradient right through to the background ?

Thanks
