View Full Version : Why mask when you can layer?

I've been reading a few painting tutorial in Photoshop and often the artist uses masks to isolate different parts of the painting. Wouldn't it be just as simple to just paint objects in their own separate layers?

You can, but when you do this you are still painting over or under the other layers. Depending on your opacity and what type of layer you are using it will still show through.

Edit: also you may need to edit something further along in the image that is on the same layer as other things.
