im still a noob at c4d, so any help would be greatly appreciated

I don't know if this will help at all, its a tutorial for Rhino but maybe you can transfer it to C4D...

Personally...
I think I would actually box model the whole thing out, gradually tapering it down. You'll need a lot of horizontal divisions to form individual feathears towards the bottom and for it to curve inwards. I wouldn't put too many vertical divisions in, you'll probably need one or two towards the top to emulate the bulge of the bones/muscle in the finger/arm of the wing and a few towards the bottom to vary the length of the individual feathers. Just don't model each feather within the wing, feathers are thing enough when layered that I think that could all be bump maping unless you want to get *really* close. Unfortunately I'm not sure where you'd get a feather texture, anyone?

can't believe I forgot this when I saw you at the school yesterday, this should help a fair bit, as well do a search for fethers here on cgtalk, over the last year if not longer, there was a thread in the texture forums consiting of links to some really awesome feathers, and another one much more recent.
