hi everyone,

here is my new creation, a kind of chic "clown". It's a huge amount of work to try to get realistic modelling since i'm rather a beginner in digital art. I only use soft brushes in photoshop with the pen pressure detection activated on my wacom to get fluid gradients.
I have a lot to learn with you.

I have to work a bit more on the ears and finish the hands (very difficult part). I'm planning to work with a mirror for a better anatomy understanding ;)

I would say you need to refine your sketches. If your sketches are off then your painting is going to be off as well and you would have wasted your time.

your sketches look too rough to be starting to paint already.

Nothing wrong with your sketches beyond bad anatomy.

Mine look even worse when I start painting...
As long as YOU can see what you're painting, it doesn't matter. Sketches are NOT finished works, they are only guidelines for you to know where you are and what you are striving for...

As far as the anatomy, the head is too small. A common mistake. Head, hands and feet being too small. The corrollary mistake with small heads is too short to no neck, which this clown also is suffering.
The shoulders should be 2.5 to 3 head widths across, depending upon how muscular the character is. If this is not a muscle-bound clown who moonlights as a wrestler, go for the 2.5 head widths.
The neck should be 2/3 to 3/4 of a head width, and about 1/3 of a head length tall.

The right hand looks pretty good, but the left hand is a bit small, and the fingers are too long, mainly the top half of the fingers past the middle joints.

The ears are too high and a bit too small. Ears sit on the sides of the head, and run from the upper eyelid to the bottom of the nostrils.
The eyes might be a bit too wide, but that is negligible, as some people have very large eyes...

Overall, this is not looking bad at all. Fix the head and hands, and give him a bit more neck.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I don't think I've ever seen a well-dressed clown.

U're right voltageme5, i'll spend more time on the sketch stage to save precious time cause i must admit that i'm spending a huge amount of time on the hands to find out good proportions.

Thanks.

Thanks you very much CybrGfx for u're anatomy advices. the fist thing i should do is to buy a figurine like this one to get the basis :

And for the details i started to use a mirror today to arrange the ears among other things on the head. But i'll post as soon as i will have fixed the neck and other things u have noticed.

The eyes might be a bit too wide

In fact the idea is to put here some kind of futurist eyes mainly made of titanium or something. This clown lost his eyes during a show and can see now thanks to a ultra sophisticated technology. It means that his unemployment period is almost over ;)

play around with your lights and darks and you'll see some wonderful things in regards to depth. If you darken it up a bit in the ears, under the chin and maybe around his eyes you'll see him start to really pop out and not look so flat. Same with the highlights. Lighten them up and you'll get the same result.

My favorite part with any piece is working the lights and darks because for me that's when the piece begins to come alive with all the depth that is added.

Thats whats great about digital painting, if you mess it up and go too dark or light, you can always undo. ;)

But keep at it.

Jesse

P.S. Depending on the placement of your light source, I would also play with the gradients at the edges all the way around. That'll help make it look more 3D. Maybe not too much, but a little detail will go a long way.

It's by far the biggest pleasure i have too in digital painting, up to now the best moment was the right hand modeling.

And u're right about the fact that the face looks too flat, but i was planning to refine its lighting later ;) In fact once the whole scene will be modeled i'll accentuate some dark and light area. The final touch. I dont want to refine it too early cause i might fix perspective pbs later (and there is already one on the face at that point lol) and it would have been a waste of time.

Agreed, for instance i have to make darker the cheek than the top of the forehead which is in a more perpendicular plan from the light source ;)

Thanks

Ok i have improved the global lighting on the face which is less flat although i can improve it a bit. I have resized the head and added a neck ;)
The hands are almost finished, i need to refine it and add nails to them. I'm planning to make the left one hold a bottle of whiskey or something...
I have just started to work on the pull over lighting, i'll refine it tomorrow.

The scene takes place in a nightclub. This poor clown is drinking alone cause he's depressed having had a difficult week at work and being breaking up with his girl friend Josiane the fire-eater

An idea : put a fluorescent wig on the table ;)
