Hello everyone, my name is Nareg Kalenderian and this is my latest reel, this is my first post here since a long time.
I am always inspired by good game cinematics and so decided to create a demo reel with a " cinematci " touch perhaps : ), You may notice one of the characters greatly inspired from blizzard's work, well it'll surely be a great honor to meet their team one day : ) , I hope you enjoy it.
You can find attached below some stills.
Please visit this site to view and download the demo reel:
www.naregkalenderian.com
Thank you.

Please note: there are three versions two of which are higher res and they are quicktime (h.264) codec which caused heavy color and gamma shifts during conversion, i would prefer if you view the streaming FLV first.
(i'll be looking into how to better export it soon)
Thank you again.

That character was done by Digic for Warhammer right? Regardless, your reel is sick. I can't even begin to imagine how long this work took. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Wow - i'd have to agree - this is quite impressive for one person alone to create! Excellent work on the mood/feel and of course the modeling/texturing looks great! Nice style as well...

Keep it up!

Hi there! I won't add much new to what has already been told but hey it's one of the best demo reels i've ever seen. If you want to get job at blizzard it's just the matter of them watching this reel that's how much it separates you from landing a job there :D. Oh and one question that i'm wondering about: how long did it take you to create it ?

cheers,
Serge.

Woww i just watched it (after three continous times)

this level of quality in a reel couldve come from a small-medium studio,

i mean, dynamics, crowd, the details on every part of it are amazing, lighting, composition...

yet you did it single handedly..

speechless

yeaa i wonder how long it took u to done this

Hey man, thats some stunning stuff you got there. Only thing it i didnt like is that it felt like it was not complete, maybe i was expecting a big fight scene and some change in rhythm after the characters are introduced but really awesome stuff i hope you get to do more of these because they are really amazing and insipiring. Thanks.

i usually just content myself with browsing these colorful forums, but i just had to register right now so i may be able to express my admiration for this nice demo reel.

oh well, i guess i will be posting more from now on :)

single handed? very nice work indeed then.

apart from seeing that this reel has many elements to it such as animation and texturing and modeling, etc, much attention was paid to small details, i personally like that the most. it make the whole thing look dead serious and polished.

here, it's done now, great work man :)

10-27-2008, 11:54 AM
wow! I am speechless everyone ! truly it's such a great pleasure to me to read all your posts! what can i say, thank you all ! : ).
For some answers, yes the entire reel was completed by myself with, i always had applying to " Blizzard " in mind while creating it, i know perhaps its a lot to post : ), but even to get their opinion would mean alot to me ), I was working on one PC workstation : ) and rendering there as well, which took i can say most of my time the workstation at the end was running 24/7 for a long time at some point i'm glad it didn't break down on me : ), i had some concepts around before but decided to finaly work on them, All in all work time took something like five months from whatever time i could spare and additional 3 months for rendering and compositing.
The crowd scene was done by animating 4 slightly different looking characters with slightly different animations and compositing/cloning them to achieve the look, didn't wish to use any crowd simulation.
The music was composed by Vatche kalenderian, it was very nice of him.
here are some more preview stills..
thank you all again... and i'll be glad to answer your questions when i can : ) .

Frst of all i would like to let you know that if you were truely an artist urself,,,you would simply be amazed at this one of a kind Master peice,, that only ONE person created,,,at such a short period of time,,,while if you think about it Blizzard is a group of more than 30 artists (if not more) so regardless of the fact of freedom of opinion my friend,i think you have no right to comment in such a way but to simply appreciate the great work,(that is ofcourse f you know what your talkin about)...

anyhow,, i just want to say that i cant stop watching this Demo reel ,,, it is jst driving me insane,,, music is great,, all is just great...

oh and one more thing my friend,, for your further information, this is NOT COPYING BLizzard,, it is simply one character inspired by Blizzard,,,simply showing that this individual ARTIST IS Able to by himself acheive such a work at a Blizzard level,,,and this is highly appreciated,,, that is why it is called a Demp reel and not necessarily should a demo real have a story,,,!!! it is the ability to Acheive the work that cunts!!

and oh one more thing ,, i think the two other characters are sooo goodd and great looking that maybe blizzard should consider on using them in their next cinematics;)

good job nareg

Hi Nareq,

You've done some great work! Can you please explain some of the techniques you used?

For instance:
- Are the trees in shot 00:00:12 - 00:00:14 real or are they Computer Generated?

Thanks!

Man all the same - not only char. Camera views - this feeling of what's happening is the same. In univercity of arts I learned that this is bad tone what he have done - becouse as for artist - there is no creativity at all, he is just a good modeller, animator (I would say so-so becouse of the stouny moves, every skilled animator would noticed), texture artist and possibly rigger. U see - I don't say that this guy is bad on 3d stuff, he just made a difficult choice for himself. peace

I will not say the same of others but I feel like the most, you're just an incredibly talented and dedicated person.

Everything in the demo is fine and this seems to me as worthy as the above is the composition, you not only are a 3D Artist / Animator, you are also an FX Composer or Scene Assambler.

Question:

1-Which what pluggins/method you made with all the vegetation?

2- the clouds? are 2D or 3D

3- The Dust (particle flow or thinking particles)

4-As for the timing of realization:
What time you were devoted to modeling , to texturing, the lighting ?

5- This is Global Ilumination or Clasical Lighting tecnique (with no final gathering or GI) ??

6- PLEASE PUT MORE MORE WIRES !!

My favorite plane: The detail of the foot stomping and the earthenware desencajando one, even me recover from that! that attention to detail my God!

Trivia: The design head of the "warcraft" man remember me I´m a legend jajaja, very good job.

! YOU ARE THE MAN !

I'd like to thank greatly the cgtalk and cgsociety here for this great honor and pleasure to see so many talented people here with so many positive feedback and encouragement, and "mv" what can i say! its such an honor thank you all!.

*to cgpilot. all elements in the reel are computer generated including the trees and some of them in the backgrounds were matte paintings, the rest like grass and bushes were hair and fur from max and lots of planes with opacity maps in some cases and compositing.

*atd - the particles are normal particles with collision detection and wind gravity from max mapped with leaf paintings and textures.

- clouds were mostly 2d mattepaintings with some 3d and lots of compositing later. i wanted some of them to move so i used a combination of noise clouds etc..from max and warped mattes in to move them around just slightly and bake that animation onto a 3d spherical or long 2d planes and track that later for background use.

- some areas were scanline with ambient occlusion , mainly some background landscapes the rest rendered in brazil.

Regarding simulation on the characters, had many layers of clothing and dynamics interacting with each other specially on the knight character, i will post more soon hopefully with images.
thank you again. : )

10-27-2008, 09:18 PM
It's interesting to really analyze the difference in skills between somebody who knows exactly what their going for, and an aspiring artist. There's a lot of things I've seen in your reel that I've been trying to figure out for a while. Mapping matte paintings correctly to a scene, the particles, vegetation, etc. I've noticed a lot of what you did is good comping, which is something I have no skill in. Haven't even used Fusion or AfterFX yet. Anyway, just wanted to say VERY nice. I felt Arthas' one mouth expression was a bit strange. The colours were fantastic, realistic lighting, yet overall slightly saturated. The particles along with the DOF pass was very cinematic. Texturing was spot on, the opening scene being particularly impressive. What really appealed to me about your reel is that along with that {gorgeous} music, the whole thing felt classical. Although a few cuts didn't seem perfect, the overall cinemetography has a similar inspiring feeling as Lord of the Rings or 300. I don't compare everybody's work to Blizzards or other big studio names, because yes their so very good, but I don't think it's important to set other people's skills and styles as #1. We should strive to achieve our own styles. But as a milestone, you've hit around that area and managed to capture some of your emotion into it. Hope you get a job wherever you want! The world is full of opportunities for talented people my friend. =}

Stunning reel!

I am really fascinated on your work on foliage.

Q: I was wondering if you could comment on your approach to creating background elements such as the Pine tree models that are animated. You mentioned you used 3ds Max for most of your foliage. Are your trees manually modeled and rigged for animation or are they stroke trees (such as Paint effects in Maya) created with Max plugin and animated procedurally?

Great work and best wishes with your future.

gotta replay on this one. That was amazing! Only 5 months for this level of work, wow. I didn't noticed anything low ranged, everything is going from middle to top quality here. I really don't mind copy of cinematography if there was any. You can see a lot of movie/game trailers with same story flow which just work for audience. Dude, if you want to work for big - top end studio, you deserve it! One can truly see the strong effort coming from this piece. Good luck!

To say the least. Great work man, the only critique I have is that it's too short hehehehe. Extremely impressive work. It made me think of "300" movie.
You seem to have a completely professional work ability.
I also noticed that the bold character in the movie was also very nicely animated.

I could not find one single default.

Maybe the demo suffers from a lack of dynamic because of the dreamy music, but it's not such a big deal. Nervermind.

Congrats !

Seriously awesome stuff. I love the composition and feel of the shots. Some of the walk cycles seem a bit odd, but that could have been intentional.

Regardless, fantastic reel and as many others have said - truly amazing if it is all your own work.

Just amazing. Well done! I love the lighting, its just like in bliz cinematics. How did you get that blurry, glowy look to everything? Is it lighting/rendering or done in comp? It looks like some sort of contrast tweak maybe, it looks great.

This is really amazing. The whole time for the rendering would be interesting. I've always the problem to find the right balance between the quality and the render time.

Did you use a render farm?

lehmi
10-28-2008, 05:04 PM
modeling, texturing, lighting, fx are really top notch!

The only thing I'd have to criticize is that you "wasted" all your skills, time and effort into something that has already been made and seen (talking about arthas grabbing his sword and pulling his hood back).

I have to say that the blizzards cinematics always inspired me, and the first thing that you want to do if you get inspired by something is to make something similar or even copy it. (I know that feeling very well) But if you think about it twice you should rather create something new with that energy of motivation that you get out of good artwork to take it to the next level, to make something that is unique, new and alot more memorable than just a copy of something. (I know this is really hard nowadays)

enough ranting, I hope this fulfills the purpose and lands you the job you've always dreamed about :)

good luck!

just wanted to let you know that today i have used your demo reel as an ideal individual 3D pro-work in this field and showed it to my students in one of the 3D modeling classes, i mean it was simply the best example to give regarding texturing, color, modeling(the one that you were inspired by Arthus or even the other ones of your own work) my students were inspired by your work, they all took with them home the link of you website to check more of your work and further be inspired by ,,

i just want to mention one thing,,, to all those who think that this was a copy of blizzards cinematics; well it is simply the fact that you have worked hard on a project simply to show to the world that you as indiviual (i.e. ONE PERSON and not a group working on one god knows what kind of a PC and not a room of workstations) were simply able to create a character more/as sophisticated as blizzards (which of course we all respect) and at the same time you;ve created two other characters that were from your own mind and imagination, i appreciate and fully understand your demo reel, there should not necessarily be a story behind it. This is not a cartoon series with story boards to amuse people, it is simply a fact of showing WHAT YOU CAN DO and well done,, keep it up ,,and they will contact you soon my friend... ;)

they just have to see it first..a talented person like you should work with other talented people like the Blizzards' Team of artists..

wish you all the best,, sorry for the composition,, (i had to write it ,, couldnt resist) ;)

Trully inspiring work.
My advice to you is act fast , and apply to Blizzard yourself, It may happen but to me it`s a long shot for them to see this thread and contact you. Besides they are hiring at the moment, You may have a good chance to get in with this reel which is close to their style.

Check out their website and go for it;) here`s the link

Nareg, let me tell you that this reel is absolutely stunning. We'd discussed it here with my colleagues, and we were estimating what time it took to accomplish this for one man. If I remember well, you pointed some five month for modeling, texturing, and some three for render and post prod. I have to say, that it's a great accomplishment.

I have few things that I have to mention, because it belongs to the full opinion. The best part was that when the the soldiers came up, and set their huge shields on the ground. After that came the masked berserker. That reminded me to 300. Great! But the half naked berserker had lot of problems during animation, and it look so obvious to me. The muscles lost their volume during animation (the neck is the most obvious), the hip moved strangely. It is a so fine scene, and these slight problems could be more elaborated.
The bald guy's facial expression is very lifeless, artificial, looks like rubber. Not because of the shading, it's perfect, but the animation. The left shoulder plate is nonfunctional, if he tried to raise his arms, he'd hit his temple. One of my former colleague is an excellent concept artist, and he'd suggest to build such a huge plates out of three segments, allowing more free movement.
The last slight problem is that that the caped guy has no sidewards weight shifting during his walk cycle.

That's all, and I'm pretty sure, that your reel would make any studio proud. This is a huge achievement, and I hope you'll get your dream job within few weeks.

And five brightly shining stars!

That character was done by Digic for Warhammer right?

I think he's meant Arthas from Warcraft 3, the armor design and the hood of the knight are very similar to that. Whereas the only similarity to our warrior priest is that both guys are bald ;)

Pretty impressive work by the way. But - and this has nothing to do with the quality - it would be even better if everything would be original in it.

Very well done. You did a superb job, and i really hope to see more from you in the future.

About the non-originality issue. I would have to say I dont see any difference with him doing this as opposed to someone doing a model of hulk or iron man. The only difference is this is an animation.

I say great job and i wish you luck.

killer reel, man.
nothing really new to add in terms of critiques.
if you're looking for work, what kind of work are you looking for? animator, lighter, etc?
even if you're not looking for work, you'll likely be contacted by a number of places. :D

if not i think you should apply yourself since they have vacancies available now.

since i do not know how long will it take them to view this link of this website... and it is a pitty if they just dont see this... i will try to send them an email to ask them to see it,,, but i'm not sure if they'l bother to read my email anyways,, so try to apply... you deserve to join the team and they deserve to have someone as talented and as competitive as you are...

i wish you all the best

this is an Ideal Reel for this century:) (to be honest with you regardless of the fact that i ADORE blizzard's cinematics, i looked carefully and seriosely i think i like your Designs for the armour of "Arthus" more than the actual arthus-armor-design" :S :)

They has done it a lot better, if U do something the same as it was - U should od it better or nobody gonna remember U. I don't think that for portfolio demo reel this is a good idea.

While I think the demo was extremely slick, I think he could have done better than to copy, what seems like, shot for shot sequence of arthas.. :/ Even that armour and such seems sooo similar.

It's very easy to see that you are very talented in all the aspects of the field! Every shot has so many level of detail from the animation to the cloth, it's very well done.

And If you can do this all on your own I can only imagine what kind of work you would be publishing with a production team :)

Damn, that's so nice.

How do you get so high quality on your render? what do i have to do to achive the same quality with mental ray?, i mean i have tryied everything just to get a realistic render on a character, and i can't seem to make him look realistic, what is the trick? i would love to know :D
