Hiya

This is my first ever post on this forum- hope you like this little guy! He's designed to be the hero of a sci-fi platformer type game. The snake like thing is actually an intelligent grapple thing which would allow him to manouver in zero G and the connector on the end has the ability to attach to things like door locks, computers etc.

Nice concept Sandcrawler, Zero G would make for some nifty "which way is up" gameplay especially with the grapple. would he have electro magnetic boots too?

will you keep him toonshaded when you build it?

The huge boots definitely lend themselves to be magnetic! I'd love to see him stay toonshaded (even though everyone in the games press reckons it to be a bit old hat these days......)

Doubt I'll get round to building him in 3d as my skills are on the concept side rather than 3D.

oops i didnt realise i was in the 2D challenge. Are you going to do an action / in game concept as your 2D entry, I'd love to see where this is going?

I might knock up an in game concept if I get some spare time. Failing that I might post up some more dynamic sketches of the character doing heroic type things!

As it stands, this is the pic I've entered into the competition. Do people generally want to see the character in a setting or is the competition just about the character itself?

Hey sandcrawler,

That's excellent, a really clean and crisp style. I like it especially because it's easy to imagine your character in-game and the way he would move and interact.

Here's another sketch of the character. I'm not completely happy with the pose yet as I don't think it's that dynamic or exciting yet.

I really like the way the grapple seems to be sentient- almost like his sidekick or something. I imagine you could get alot of character out of its movement if it were to be animated (well I think so anyway!!)

I liked the first image, but yeah this pose is miles ahead of the other. If you're still doing poses I'm sure the next one will be good too. But this is cool!

Yeah I'm going to keep going on it as I need to find a pose that kind of sums up the character. He's supposed to be a space pirate (in my head!) but in the game would become an unwilling hero type. I'm pretty happy with his head shape and face though.

I like your style. Are you going to do a full shaded pseudo-realistic shot for the final piece?

sandcrawler

Thanks :)

I don't think I'm gonna get time to do a final piece now unfortunately. But even if I did I wouldn't go down the full shaded realistic route anyway. Mostly this is because I like using this style at the moment but also I wanted the character to use cel shading in the game.

I think the character as it stands does look like a games character and fits the brief, although it doesn't quite have the finish that some of the other entries in the competition have. There is some awesome art in the comp which is making me want to put a couple of late nights in and finish it off!

Go for it. I love the 2d cartoon shade style. The only reason I asked was that usually even 3d characters are 'touched up' a bit to make them more realistic for promo stuff.

I think it looks great the way it is!
