Not sure how advanced this really is, but here goes...

I am modelling a bunch of grapes http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6b/Grapes.jpg

They seem to hang in what can loosely be described as a spiral pattern, the grapes fit into each others cracks to form this pattern from my observation.

Ive discussed this with people I know and there were a few suggestions made:

Using an array
Using Mel script to set up the vine branching
Using particles

I myself have little experience with this kind of strategy, so i thought i would learn something new(rather than model out everything separately, and place them one at a time :S).

This may be extraneous information but:

I plan on using Vray to render, using SSS materials.

I can model in both 3DSMax or Maya, so any ideas in either software would be a lifesaver.

Other great examples of this "spiral pattern" that I am going for:

Ya know, I've tried doing this before, and the best (I think) was to just either do it by hand OR use the Maya PaintFX preset, convert to poly, and tweak.
