View Full Version : Maya Techniques | Using mental ray for Maya????
onlooker 06-11-2003, 03:30 AM Has anyone seen this DVD??? Maya Techniques | Using mental ray for Maya
I've bought a few from Alias before, but I am hesitant to purchase from them because I think their content on DVD's is Hit, and Miss sometimes.
Has anyone seen this , and would you recommend it? :)
Thanks in Advance. :D

Not to knock anyones product(s), but personally, depending on your level of intelligence, this would seem like a waste of money as im sure that anything and everything in that series could be learned just as well through a few tutoprials maybe, and some trial and error...dont be afraid to teach yourself, especially if youre cheap like me...

yeah, anymore i find the quality of online tutorials match or better those you find in books or videos.
I have the DVD I think it’s pretty good. Paolo goes into a lot of interesting techniques with Mental Ray. He shows you ways to speed up your work that you can't find on any online tutorials. Of course he goes into a lot of the basic stuff GI, Caustics & Final Gathering but there is a lot of other great stuff on the DVD too. Fine Displacement, Real Area Lights, HDRI, Light Baking, Motion Blur and some extra features on the PDF such as Contour Rendering using Mental Ray shaders, Faking Glows in Mental Ray, Volumetric Fog Effects and Volumetric Caustics.
I cut my render times in half after watching the DVD. It’s a really speedy workflow he shows.

yah, i would say to not buy it. everything i learned on there i have really found online now adays. i always wondered how do people measure there scene for FG? FG that stuff is all online now. i would save your money, just go to boris3d, check out all the mental ray stuff there. that dvd really just teaches you some basics i think. its been a while since i seen it, but i remember parts he would mention and i would get really excited, like i thought he would explain how he you should figure out how much photons to use or somehing then!... "now for motion blur" thats not accurate but i just remembered a few times i really wanted to learn something that i think should be applied if your using mental ray and he would just skip it. so i would just check out online tutorials. its just my opinion, i mean you dont know me or my backround you know, but i honestly think you can learn just as much online on like boris3d for exp.

as for selling it, sorry i didnt see that part. i would check ebay. i have seen a lot of dvds going up on there for incredibly cheap. maybe post on here "anyone wanna seel there mental ray dvd? you know? i like having mine cause its just neat seeing all them 3d dvds stacked up.

Have a look for yourself - http://mr.jupiter-jazz.com/
You maybe intersted in this DVD, it looks like its going to be a good one too. I am also planning to get this one too - http://www.motiondesign.biz/
It should released in the next month or so. :buttrock:
Onlooker,
I think you should save your money or should buy something else instead. What is taught on the DVD is pretty much the same as what you would find in the mental ray tutorials on the web (e.g. boris3d site) and that motionbiz one.
To me since mental ray is integrated at Maya 4.5 and above, Alias Wavefront should give us more documentation, tutorials, and clear concepts on mental ray, like the way XSI did with their documentation. And not just focus mainly on the native renderer.
