A new challenger appears! And kinda late to the game!

Hey, folks, 435 here. Gonna try to do the Imperial AT-ST "Chicken" Walker for this here challenge. I don't have direct artistic reference just yet (having to create it myself around my other scheduled responsibilities), but I will be drawing a bit from a Lego version (http://flickr.com/photos/29726272@N02/sets/72157606858974907/) someone made and posted on flickr.

Updates as they happen.

Prepare for the weekend flood!

Been doing a lot of work on this, but I've been parting things out and I've been unsure on how to proceed in the posting process.

Anyway. Concept art is here (http://www.4-thirty-5.com/cgsociety/ATST.jpg). My focus has changed a little, instead going with a more iron and lead feel. The overall feel is more United States Civil War than Victorian... Given that the Empire is all about the disposability of their soldiers, it seems fitting.

Anyway. To the first part of the head.

The gun that attached to the "chin" is a derivative of a seaside mortar from the USCWar. They were big, fat and stocky. Just like me!

Not too bad of a start, but you got lots to do, and not a lot of time.

Modeling looks good so far, but the concept could use a bit of a tweak, the way the feet are shown supporting the body doesn't agree with physics, not that steam punk does to begin with, but the center of gravity looks way too far back. Adding some sort of back support to the foot would solve the problem, and not require to much extra modeling.

thanks to mspaint here's a quick little idea.

I'm kinda deviating from my original concept work in the first place (sometimes the art pass doesn't hold up to the modeling pass). I've pulled the legs back a bit to give room for some of the design elements which have been tweaked, bringing the pivot closer to the center of gravity. Hopefully it'll look less out of whack than the sketchwork when it's done!

Thanks, broddah!

Stupid level of detail on some of this.

Sleep is my worst enemy. Damn my circadian rhythm!

Alright, continuing on. Dropped to the bottom of things to the foot (which is actually where I started, but I got frustrated). Building up from there.

First, the base plate.

And now, with the toe (cattle catcher) attached.

Toe light inspired by both locomotives and vacuum cleaners. :]

Padded area for the rear tip bit to hit when this thing is walking. Don't wanna scratch that metal too much, after all.

And now, here's the lowest section of the leg attached.

And here's how it all gets stabilized. Chain cha-cha-chain chain.

There is deep shame in my failure to finish within the allotted time. However, there were pressing matters I needed to attend to (other classwork) and thus was unable to complete this within the boundries of the challenge.

I am continuing to work on it. I rather like how it's turned out, and intend to still finish it quickly.

Still, in case anyone cares. The main body of the dang thing

And put together with the head.

I really like the cow catcher for a foot.

There's no shame in not finishing. Part of the challenge is the difficult time constraints and there's always next time.
