View Full Version : A UV question
korthuran 10-22-2008, 09:48 PM I've done a little with UV's but I've never done anything with high poly stuff. I've searched for some answers but I'm getting some older articles. I want to make sure they are still up to date. With that said, a couple rather simple and possibly stupid questions.
My first question is if I model something low poly and then smooth it to high poly what would the general work flow with UV's be? Am I correct in that I would just simply go about laying out the high poly UV's until it is right and then texturing?
When working with Sub-D's do you lay out the UV's in poly mode and then convert to UV's, adjust, and then texture?
I work with Maya in case that affects the answers.

I don't use sub-d modelling so I can't help you with that .
But anyways if your mesh's verts are uniformly spaced it is a lot more predictable to know what will happen witht he uv's when ti is smoothed as there wont be much movement with the verts and hence slight movement of uv's .
When a mesh has irregularily spaced geometry components its a bit less predictable to tell what will happen when its smoothed how much vert and uv shifting will happen . like a very densely detailed part next to a part that has very little detail would eb an area of concern , you would then get a bit of movement happening on the overall placement of the vertices when the mesh is smoothed .
How I sometimes test is just applying an average vertex operation on a set of vertices on your low poly mesh , this will give you an idea of how much the verts and UV's will move when you smooth or sub divide to a higher polycount . An example of common vertex movement is if you have a corner on your model that becomes more rounded when you smooth .
All you need to do is a few unfolds/relax's to world space on the UV's inside your UV shells after smoothing , that normally fixes any little distortion problems going from low poly to high poly. However if your mesh isn't that uniform with lots of big changes in spaces between vertices I would suggest unwrapping at the smoothed level of geometry .

Thanks. I'll have to do some playing around with it but that helps a good bit.
