Thankyou very much, the Quickstart series is going nuts with bandwidth and I've started to syndicate it out to some other sites to take the load off a bit. There's plenty of interesting stuff yet to come.

Hi Wayne!
That wouldn't be a Glaswegion accent now would it? When I hear your voice it reminds me of my hero Connely :D .
Great vids. On the first one you talk a little about your rig specs. Could you write them down here. I am only getting 2 mil atm (which is better than a firecracker up yer jacksie but not much) and would like to see what you are using for comparison.

Anyhow great work and a delightfull presentation.

I've not tried soft modding this particular Gcard into a quadro yet, (as I do with others on my machines often) but when I do I'll be sure to report back my findings.

Musashidan: Well I've had alsorts of locations put forward as to my accent lol. I live in north west durham (so technicaly not 'geordie') although it sightly messed up due to living some of my early years in yorkshire as well.

But yeah, its usually not terribly advisiable to call scottish people english and visa-versa in my experience (I've family from scotland...)...I think we'll bypass entirely the hatred of scots of being called 'scotch' ... I dont get wound up over it though a its unfair to expect people to know every main accent in every country. So it wont be 'raining heeds' quite just yet. ;)

Nah I just had a nasty does of flue thats all, plus I needed to do some client stuff to help bring the pennies in. While myself and Autodesk would love nothing better than to put each wave up at the same time, due to the ammount of hits they are getting thats simply impossible. thats why they are being staggerd...its costing them a bomb as it is to make them available.

There's still plenty in the can left to come yet..thats not counting the new stuff I've been recording the last 48 hours.

Thanks again wayne.we all really appreciate the tremendous time and effort required to make this possible.

Also, from the many examples(in your many vids all over the web) i am hugely impressed with mudboxes real time rendering and it's complete simplicity to implement.especially your recent example which compared a max MR render to an MB realtime render.simply beautiful!!

Cheers again wayne:applause: glad your flu's cleared up.(and not in a selfish way!lol)

Hard surface texturing (last of wave 1) now up

Part 6 - Hard Surface texturing (41mins) (http://area.autodesk.com/index.php/tutorials/tutorial_index/groundup_series_hard_surface_texturing/)

Here's the link to the last videos of wave 1 of the Ground Up series..expect the start of wave 2 in a day or three.

Well it's been a helluva week and looks like someone has takenvery big exception to this series and the QuickStart one. In the last 2 week Ive had 2 attacks with drive killer taking out over 4 terrabyte of drives (and turning them into paperweights...along with the last year of work) and tonght my paypal account hacked.... is that going to stop the series? No chance ;) I don't give in to bullies.

I have enjoyed your series (and accent :) ) alot so far, keep em comin soldier.

Well my wife would hand my gonads on a washing line if I was ever to even borrow someones significant other lol. Wthout some heavy work by the behind the scenes people at Autodesk this series wouldn't have been possible to share for free. I know that they get bad press from time to time (well 99% of the time, which is odd as there are virtual monopolies in other areas of 3d that get magicaly ignored...lol), but I speak as I find and they've been great to me.....and yes even before the vids were mentioned, and even beofre anyone other than my wife knew who I was.

There's many more to come, and I've no intention of stoping any time soon. I'm glad you've been enjoying them, although obviously someone out there really hates my accent lol.

Yes,... I use 5 apps for a model and only one is max (autodesk) so the fear escapes me. There are a zillion packages out there.

Now be a nice chap and disconnect those backups from your network :)

Mudbox 2009 'From the Ground Up' : 'Wave 2' (Character Detailing)

Part 2 - 11mins (http://area.autodesk.com/index.php/tutorials/tutorial_index/groundup_series_character_detailing/) (due to a file namimng mess up part 1 will be up asap)

(other videos will be added to this list as they are released.)

Total time: 3 hours

Well there's no time to have a rest for those watching these.... here's the start of wave 2 which includes the obj and Mud file for those who wish to follow along. I this wave we'll cover in real time the sculpting of a complete character that as part of wave 3 we'll texture and take into max, maya, xsi and maybe even a game engine or two.

You'll see a whole lot more of this character as he'll be used to demonstrate some of the new features of Mudbox as they arrive over time. I've kept the polygon counts down to a dull roar on this one so that everyone can keep up. providing your machine can run mud2k9 you'l have no problem with the polygon counts in this demonstration model.

No stamps or stenicls are used for the suit and we cover sculpting the entire thing by hand (although there's a good trick with the face detail later on.) This wave runs at 3 hours long in real time and I've made it as easy to follow as I can without being condecending. Things that were covered in wave one wont be recovered in this wave as it is expected that you have watched wave 1 before wave 2.
Enjoy

Hey Wayne! Thanks for the tutorials, I'd originally wrote off 3d sculpting as beyond my ability, being a mostly hard surface modeler, but your videos have changed my mind. Cheers!

I started years and years back as a purely hard surface poly modeller and felt the same.... its a different discipline, but once you get into it you wont stop. Its great that these vids have encouraged you to explore a new field, just remember to make sure that you have the basics covered well before you move to each new stage.

I've been trying to get these videos for a month now. I can't seem to be able to log onto the area.autodesk.com site or create an account. No matter what I've tried, I always get "screen name is not available". I've tried everything and any variations of an account name and the result is always the same.

Anyone else have these problems? I'd really like to see mudbox in action but this is killing me!

Clean out your browsers cookies and history cache,... close the browser and try again. See if that helps.

PixelNations

I've tried this on 3 different machines on two different networks. Attempted the most obscure user names and (even mixed alpha and numerics) combinations, yet still get "Invalid User Name"-there's just no way that everything I tried comes up with the same results! Browser caches cleared, and attempted using both Firefox and IE, and even Safari!

Wayne, I know you are busy but if there is a chance you could PM me with an email address of someone at the area site that can help me create an account, I'd be very grateful. I really just want to see the videos and anything else mudbox related. I'm hoping that I can get a trial version at some time but I first want to see the videos.

Thanks for the help.

Yeh cheers wayne,i'm well into wave 2 now.your approaches to sculpting are superb.i've purposely sculpted up to the end of part two and then started again with the level 0 basemesh just to practice these techniques.
although i've never worked with clay(apart from the standard ashtray everyone makes in school:) ) i actually feel like i am when using your methods, especially the rough pass with the wax brush and the scrape and flatten pass to clear details.

great stuff looking forward to more.

When you're sculpting humans, do you tend to work from the same base mesh, or do you create a new one for each character?

Cheers, Bri.

It depends on how lazy I'm feeling to be honest :D , if its been a hard week I may reuse and old base mesh, but if its either something different, or things have been pretty easy going then I may knock a few new base meshes out at one to use later. I also keep a library of parts that I can add to meshes to save time.

Yep over the flue thank you. I took a break from the vids overxmas and new year as most people are off work and I had a lot of work in I had to do over the xmas period. Once I get the new year out of the way and sorted I'll start things up again. They will come to an end / long break at some point as they take up alot of time (plus I've got to save some stuff for the masterclasses I'm due to do next year and the book lol.)

But of course come the serivice pack and eventual new version the whole process will start again. ;) So after wave 3 (which is going to be a loooonng one) things will get slightly less regular. Plus I'm starting something up in the new year where I can round all this up into one place for people.

Happy new year and I'm glad that they got you up and running as fast. :) (I've a feeling the ground up and quickstart vids wil follow me around for the rest of my 3d life if their popularity is anything to go by lol.)
