Hi
I hope im posting in the right place. I have searched for answers to my question everywhere but always find the question answered with "use the merge tool" :( it seems so simple but anyways..

Using Maya Unlimited..just starting out and im trying to connect 2 vertices with an edge, not merge them into one. Using the split polygon tool does work but not reliably, sometimes it creates another vertex ontop of the one its supposed to be using and also you cant select 5 vetices and simply say connect, you have to go at it one at a time. Is there a magic way hiding from little old me?

Thank you for taking the time to help me!

Kind regards,
Jali

What do you mean you're trying to connect 2 vertices with an edge but not weld them?
I'm sorry but the explaination is a bit obscure.Perhaps post up a pic so we can see what you mean.

A picture would help explain what you mean.

Are you trying to snap a vert to an edge?
if so snap the vert to an other vert on the edge then slid the vert along the edge by selecting the vert and in the move tool attributes set the move to move along edge and select the edge you want to orient the move tool to.

Or put a new vert on an edge?
Just select the cut faces to tool and click on an edge then hit return.

To merge multiple verts open the merge verts options (the little square in the menu) and increase the radius. Or use merge to center.

Take the side of a cube, it has 4 vertices. I want to draw and edge between 2 corners so now a square has two triangles in it. I realize this is what the split poligon is for but that tool inserts vertices, i just want to connect existing vertices.
sorry i dont know how to upload pics here..i dont have a website to insert image from...

How is that difficult to understand? He wants to draw an edge between two or more existing vertices. For example, you have a six sided poly and want an edge between two of them to create two quads, ready for sub-D.

I don't use Maya, so I don't know how it works there.

thanks piflick :) i thought it was pretty straight forward too..i thought i was going mad people thinking i was asking something obscure!

I've been using Silo so much I've forgotten which tools are specific to Maya and which are to Silo but here's a solution I believe will work.

You should be able to use the split tool and snap it to the verticies using V. If it doesn't let you keep doing it without reselecting the tool just press the G key after you split a poly. The G key is a hotkey that brings up whatever tool you used last.

If you still aren't able to ensure that it's hitting the vertices properly then purposefully place your split away from the vertice. After you cut the polys you can go back to those misplaced vertices and snap/weld/merge them together in proper position.

thank you:thumbsup: . that sounds like it will work. I can believe that there isnt something more simple to connect multiple vertices though.

There very well may be. I just can't remember for sure. I haven't worked extensively in Maya with modeling for a while so my mental memory is gone. All I've got is muscle memory so I need to sit down and do it to remember if there is or not.

I wish i had muscle memory..where can i buy it? all this learning from scratch is nonsense, give me the easy way out i say :bounce: Since you not using yours can i have it?? hehe

Thanks again for your help,

Sorry for not understanding what you were trying to do.

The trick is in the split poly tools options set the smoothing angle to 0.
